Pet Shop complete. Blacktron Brewery under construction and guarded by Shelob. Dining room table cleared off just to see all the buildings in one spot for the first time. It looks so much more impressive having all the buildings in one spot instead of across multiple book shelves.

Sorry for the bad lighting/blurry pics. I am hungry and have shaky hands at the moment.

So what are your thoughts on the Pet Shop build, as compared to the other modulars, PhoncipleBone?

And an open question to all... are there any recent previous LEGO themes that you are planning to, or would like to, go back and pick up?

I was originally planning on getting the Indiana Jones sets, but the markup is making it unattractive now. I am thinking about getting the Pharaoh's Quest and Prince of Persia sets, mainly for some of the unique pieces and minifigs. Having a LEGO pyramid and an Middle-East castle would be great as well.

Loved it. I really don't know where to rank it with the others though. Fire Brigade is special because it was the first one I did. And of course, the second floor of Fire Brigade still reigns as the best part of any modular set. Also, it has the most "WTF? That is how that is pulled off?" parts of any of the buildings. From the brick texture to a few parts actually going in upside down. The downside to it is that it is really tough to get figures and details moved around on the first floor once completed.

Town Hall is very much my least favorite build. I love how it looks when done, but building it was just good and not great. The color scheme of the building is awesome, and the elevator is ingenious.

Grand Emporium is the best looking one in my opinion. It might be that there is so much more detail on the front of the building due to two sides showing instead of one.

Pet Shop is wonderful because you get to distinct little buildings with it, and both offer different techniques. I LOVE the color scheme of the pet store part though. That sand blue and black combination is absolutely killer. Also, it has more neat little touches inside than Grand Emporium and Town Hall. At least cooler ones. I am also a big fan of the roof on each building, and I tried something similar on my Corner Florist MOC the other month, but didnt pull it off as well as Lego did. :)
My favorite detail in the entire set is so simple though. It is the second floor of the town house part. There is almost no detail in the entire interior of the floor, and the two things you do build on the floor were confusing as hell as you put them in. But then you add that one thing to the side wall and the mini figure and the whole thing makes sense. It might actually be my favorite detail of any of the modulars. I am being vague on purpose, because discovering it is so neat.

So I continued to pick up some Kreo Transformers sets because they are on clearance everywhere. I plan on putting some together this weekend and I will post some pics. I got the mega Optimus Prime set, Sentinel Prime and the deluxe Bumblebee set. I love these little kreon dudes, they are awesome if you are a Transformers fan. The sets really are pretty good to. I'm really surprised i'm not finding more people online making other characters out of these sets. I'm thinking of picking up the devastator set and making an Omega Supreme out of him. My first custom though will be a G1 Jetfire.

Anyways, so I feel myself getting sucked into this Lego scene now. I really need a new laptop for going back to college and my new work at home job and I conveniently found out I had a small rollover 401k from my last job which is enough to get a pretty good laptop.

But i'm trying to convince myself that the current laptop I have that keeps getting HDD errors and has a dead battery is good enough for now so I can spend the money and get the entire LoTR sets. Is this bad?

The Prince of Persia sets are great and horribly underrated. Sure, the movie they're based on wasn't that good, but I don't think the sets should be judged harshly because of it. The Battle of Alamut and Quest Against Time are a couple of my favorite sets of the last few years. They're both really well designed, they're fun to build, and the playability is seriously through the roof. Plus, they have some great parts for MOCs. I HIGHLY recommend the PoP sets.

I haven't touched a motorized set in years. I recently found a box with some motorized Technics pieces in it though and if they are still functional, they are yours-you are in Toronto right?

I just watched your video on the Lokomat. You are fucking amazing.

Thanks for the kind words! Do you think I should make a post about it on GAF?

I will definitely take the technic pieces! Where in Toronto are you?

I'd say go to Bricklink and order some technic parts and one NXT motor, a control module and an ultrasonic sensor. You can make something with those for a lot less than $350. That is what I'd do if I was into programmable lego stuff. Or for greater convenience try buying used NXT set off of Bricklink. There's a used one here for $250 that lets you build a whole walking robot: http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?itemID=59190

If you want to make RC models, there's different motors and remote controls you can get. They go under Power Functions name, and you can order them for cheapest off of lego's own web store.

Thanks! I'll check that stuff out now :)

Stopped by my parents' place on route to visiting other family and jobs interviews and the like. I found most of my Lego bins while I was there (still missing one or two, I think they're tucked in behind some tires in the basement and I didn't feel like moving everything to get them out). The biggest bin had stuff I wanted to keep together, from the pirate ship to my rescue helicopter, trike and others. I did forget how many damn baseplates I have, too, four or five of those old moon crater ones, maybe a dozen combined road and runway pieces, islands, rivers, plain baseplates, and so on. There is a large grey one that didn't stand up to the ravages of time as it cracked right down the middle, but all the others are in great shape.

Many of the boxes are still there too, most notably my Model Team truck and copter, my old castle, rescue helicopter and some smaller boxes (the wizard's retreat or whatever it's called is visible in the picture as well as a pneumatic technic set).

I brought my favourite Model Team set back home, though it is missing some pieces. I ended up substituting some colours in a couple of places and don't think it's all that noticeable. It's mostly on the helicopter roof.

Also found this in a thrift store for $7. It's missing all but one minifig and a couple of little pieces for the side guns but everything else is there I think.

Whirl N Wheel Super Truck represent! Biggest set I ever owned as a kid, and I never took it apart. I left it at an apartment I lived in when I moved out REAL fast. I needed to be out ASAP before I lost my mind, and left tons of stuff behind. Including that set that never was disassembled.

EDIT: Also, the voting is up for the Lego GAF MOC Contest.

Some really, really cool stuff in there if any of you have not looked at it yet.

It was my largest set too (well, in terms of piece count, the pirate ship was physically bigger). I took it all apart for the trip back partially because I wanted to rebuild it - I find older Lego instructions kind of interesting as they're not nearly as explicit as the new ones and some of the build steps cram a ton of things together.

This one is no different, and many of the steps have you assembling things that are very delicate until they're locked in later on.

The good ole' days of not showing what pieces you need each step. You had to study the instructions to see what changed from step to step. That was one unique thing about Technic back in the day, they showed what pieces you needed per step. The other sets never did. There was nothing worse than getting five steps ahead and realizing you left out a piece. I still do that occasionally.

Ah, that explains it. :) Congrats on the little girl.
dito, congrats hero :)

According to brickset I'm at around $1,120 retail value for what I've bought this year, but the larger sets were bought on sale. The only time I've paid MRSP or more is for small $15-20 sets.

Oh, god. I have bought the equivalent of $2985 worth of sets this year. The amount spent is less because of deals and coupons, etc. But it frightens me to actually add that up. I could have paid off a large chunk of my credit card debt with that money and be that much closer to financial freedom.

But it would not have been anywhere near as fun. :)

ouchi

We have retail prices for 46 of the sets you own. Using that data we have calculated that their total retail value is US$1954.

Now, this is thinking that I have every piece from every set I had as a kid. Many sets are incomplete now or missing completely. Yet I still have the instructions.

We have piece counts for 65 of the sets you own. Using that data we have calculated that you own 43573 pieces!

I only have my "new" sets in the brickset DB for precisely that reason. at rebrickable I have them all.

Some older sets I know I have all of them. Mainly through reassembly this past year. But things like the M Tron series are long gone to the mystery Lego bin in the sky.

However, the total of what I spent this year is accurate. Well, accurate MSRP. I spent less than that due to discounts.

the thing is the legos on my old sets are partly kinda grotty. they where kids toys after all...
so they are all stored and sorted seperately as to not infect my new pristine LEGO ;)

I toyed with doing that, but decided against it. I kept them separate for a while, but caved into combining them eventually. Too many old pieces to use to just toss aside and not use in MOCs. It also adds a bit of flair to see a yellowish gray block in the middle of a building. Adds character.

And cleaning ain't doing anything for my old bricks. I have so many blue bricks that are half blue, half green. I don't know if it is dirt or sun damage. I have tried scrubbing them and nothing changes it. It is funny because you can see the gradation between colors.

its not just the faded colours, its also bite marks xD

No teethmarks here. Just memories of broken and chipped finger nails. Praise the Lego gods for putting brick separators in so many sets now. Well, I am kind of annoyed by it, because if I knew everything would come with them, I would not have ordered one months ago. Now I have like 8 or so of them. But the plus side is they are all over the apartment, so I never need to hunt for one.

An example of what you can do with the parts I suggested is a motorized vehicle that stops just before it's about to hit something in front of it. Then when obstacle is removed, it would keep going. Or you can make it go reverse when it 'sees' obstacle, and with some clever bit of mechanism, make the sensor turn around as well, so it would point to the direction of where the vehicle is going, ready to reverse the direction again.

With two motors and two ultrasonic sensors you could make it steer left or right instead, and make a slalom kind of track to guide it through.

Another example with one motor and one sensor is the alligator model that snaps his jaws when something moves close to it. This is actually something that you get instructions for if you buy the NXT set.

I'm building a city with real water. I need a boat that can floats. Beside, I paid $70 for a $120 set. Can't really complain about anything.

Oh I'm not criticizing you for your purchase, haha. I'm simply saying I didn't find any need for a piece that large with such a constrained use. If you're rockin a city with water, all the better!

i agree, thats the reaso i didnt buy the airport when that was being sold dead cheap here.

I agree with that. The latest airport sucks. I'm majoring in transport management and collect lego with that theme (trains, boats, trucks, light rail, plane) and I was turned of completely by the wings and hull of the plane. The boat can have the excuse that it needs to float, but the airport is either greed from lego or laziness from the designers.

I'm sure this has been asked many times but how do you guys store/sort your LEGO? (pictures would be helpful)

I have a lot less then most of you guys, most of mine are not in sets, and having a hard time coming up with a good storing system while having them sorted and still have easy access to them. Right now I've sorted according to color and having them in separate containers but that is getting difficult to drag all out just to use.

Sorting is the bane of most of us LEGO addicts. There are articles all over the web about it, but it comes down to preference.

I will say this - sorting by color alone is probably the worst thing you can do.

Work with me for a moment...Say you need a 2x2 red plate. You dig out your red bucket and find PILES of red pieces, but you just need that 2x2 plate. Good luck.

If you sort by piece STYLE (plates, bricks, slopes, etc etc), finding a specific color will be much easier. Deciding one what styles to sort by is largely up to you, though. If your collection is massive, having only a few categories isn't going to help much. My first method included plates (1x3, 1x4, 1x6, etc). I kept bricks the same way.

As you sort bricks by basic category, you start to see what works and what doesn't work. You also might determine that sorting by color in some situations WILL be beneficial, but typically works best as a subcategory.

I know that's not exactly what you were looking for...Try using LEGO Digital Designer for a starting point. Play with the categories there and you can start seeing what you like.

Day 2 of the SSD build. Sorry for the lighting in the pictures. It depends on the time of the day, or what my wife is watching on the tv when the pictures were taken.

Whelp, just bought the new Tie-Fighter from Amazon Warehouse for $42 in "like new" condition. Looking forward to adding it to my shelf with the seX-wing and Y-wing fighters.

Really hope that next wave have Star Wars sets has a new A-wing or B-wing. And yeah, I know about the UCS B-wing, but the size isn't for me.

Why the hell arethe Spongebob sets so expensive?

I was looking at the carnival one and it's $39 for a 160 piece set! Craziness.

I kept things low key and went with the skiff.

Canadians: Toys R Us has marked down a lot of the big SW sets. Falcon is down to 146 and the Battle of Endor is 106...

The rumored 1H 2013 Star Wars sets:

Planets Series Three:
Kamino with Astromech Droid and Jedi Starfighter
Coruscant with Clone Pilot and Republic Assault Striker
Asteroid with TIE Bomber and TIE Pilot

Regular sets:
The Old Republic Battle Pack
Clone Troopers vs Droidekas Battle Pack
A-Wing including Admiral Ackbar, Han Solo and an A-Wing Pilot
AT-RT including Yoda, Clone Trooper and Assassin Droid
Z-95 Headhunter including three Clone Troopers
The Rancor Pit

Remember that 1H traditionally do not include larger sets, so these will all be $60 or less each...
