Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

What's wrong with the Asus Transformers' build quality?
With the Prime: GPS does not work, wifi is weak, bluetooth audio lag, weaker wifi with bluetooth enabled, random reboots, micro sd card sticks out; its spring loaded so it will accidently pop out, the internal flash memory is the slowest of its kind - making the web browsing on it painful as it'll freeze when the browser writes anything to the disk.

Here's a thread of people returning their units to Best Buy http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1796743

"Click in." Referred to the keyboard click I guess?

The surface cake had all the surfaces time set to 9:14 . Sept 14th is a friday. I bet that is when all the RT stuff gets announced and the press gets a proper run down

2 days after Apple unveils both a new iPhone and a new iPad? Sounds like a terrible idea.

If they were planning on the 14th, I gotta imagine they will either move the event forward or towards the end of September.

If the announcements are mostly more of the same, it won't really matter. An iPad mini doesn't compete with Surface anyway.

I'm thinking that the real iPad competitors will be Clover Trail tablets without pen input or Wacom, those should match much more closer to the price of iPads while still providing some desktop functionality. Unfortunately I have a feeling that OEMs will still overprice them compared to iPads because they think consumers will buy their tablets just because it can run legacy Windows programs.

Point being that both the tech press and the mainstream press will be talking about nothing but the Apple devices for a week after they're unveiled. Anything else announced in the wake of that stuff will get completely buried.

Not necessarily. This is Microsoft's own tablet after all. As long people are making comparisons between what Apple and Microsoft has shown, it'll make more people aware of the existence of the Surface tablet. Who wants to read Microsoft news on its own?

Joshua Topolsky talked on the Vergecast about the massive amount of hits they got during the Surface reveal. So yeah, people are still interested in what Microsoft does.

Haven't read TOO much into it but I was hoping for a unified system where I log into Windows 8 on my PC then if I have to go, I'll bring my Surface and log in to that and I'll have the exact same thing. Similar to roaming profiles.

Not surprised, but I was thinking more of people who don't read tech sites and mainstream media who don't write or read about something unless it's fed to them. Surface probably won't get a large retail presence at launch anyway.

I don't think I'd ever want bricks associated with an electronic device I was selling. Especially if I was Microsoft. Not to mention that whole brick to windows connection.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone saying their windows computer "bricked". Isn't bricking a term tied to flashing roms, especially on mobile devices?

If there is a locked boitloader, its possible to brick it.

its not if its possible , its if bricking is linked to MS and its not. I've never heard anyone use the term bricked and ms in the same sentance.

Apple and bricked and Andriod and bricked yes. But not ms and bricked.

At the end of the day , if Apple was doing this type of advertising people would be beating each other up at the chance to tell everyone how great this advertising is and how great apple is.

Since its MS everyone is complaining

Half of a message's power is in subconscious connotations and connections.

Haven't caught up with the Surface since the announcement. Are there any more solid details out there on these tablets?

nothing yet. We saw a piture of the surface cake in which the surface tablets had the time 9:14. I'm assuming sept 14th is when we will get more info.

Some sites are reporting that the RT will be $200.

I'm gonna be honest, I have no idea how anyone would make such a connection.

I think the ad looks pretty good.

Have you never used a windows mobile or windows phone device? It's easy to put MS and bricked in the same sentence.

I have. Windows phone. Whats there to brick ? There are no roms out there from what I can tell . And even still window's phone has what 4% of the global market ?

Windows mobile ? Yes custom roms were popular back in the day but its been a good 4-5 years since those phones were popular and even then market share and size of the market was smaller.

Now look a apple. Apple uses the verbage of bricked. The iphone is bricked until you unbrick it and activate it.

Brick is a non specific general term for rom flashing scenerios. I don't know why you are so against it. If somebody try to flash WP8 bits on his WP7 phone and "disable" it, are you going to invent a new word for it? Why? People who flash iPhone/Android phones are the same demographic on xda who will flash WP8 phones.

Entertain me, what's your version of the word for "bricking"?

I don't know if you understand what the phrase "bricked" means

It's an advertisement on a brick wall. If the advertisement were on a billboard or a city bus would people be saying something as incredibly dumb as "I wouldn't want my product associated with buses!"?

I just find eastman's posts incredibly entertaining.

I find your posts incredibly entertaining. I'm sure Xda forums is so mainstream that everyone in the world will equate surface drawings on a brick wall with people bricking their cell phones.

Guys... Guys. Seriously now.

As I've already said, it wasn't a complaint. Just the first two thoughts that popped in my mind were A. My two dead Xbox 360s, and B. A brick is nice to use when you want to break windows. That's all. Come on now.

This thread obviously needs more real news.

Thats me to a tee. I really want this to be good and I'll get it. All I need is some sources other than Microsoft to confirm the battery is excellent and it's mine.

What is in the surface RT that would make it get worse battery life than andriod tablets ?

The rt has a 31.5wh battery and the pro has a 42wh battery. The rt is using a tegra chip , the tegra 3 or the tegra 3 + . The pro is using a ivy bridge ( i hope haswell).

So lets look at other devices.

The transformer prime has a tegra 3 its 10.1 inches and it has a 24WH battery.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5175/asus-transformer-prime-followup/3

The transformer prime gets over 8 hours of battery life web browsing and 10 hours watching 720p movies .

Thats a 24wh battery vs the 31.5wh of the Surface. So even if the surface has more ram it should have similar battery life .

I think 8 hours + is good for a tablet.

The pro is going to be harder to figure out.

Take the mac air 11 inch

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6063/macbook-air-13inch-mid-2012-review

You have a dual core i5 1.7ghz ivy bridge. I personaly think we will be getting a quad core by the time febuary comes around. But regardless

Light work the 11 inch is 5 hours , medium is 4 hours , heavy is 2.43 hours

he describes his tests here http://www.anandtech.com/show/6023/the-nextgen-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-review/16

Now the 11 inch has a 35wh battery obviously smaller than the 42 wh of the surface pro.

2.43 hours is ideal by any means , but anand is downloading at 1MB/s playing a 1080p movie in addition to what hte medium test does which is loading flash webpages every 10 seconds

So i'm assuming the surface will do much better playing back a video by itself or just surfing the web normaly.

I'd wager the pro will get 5 hours or so of video playback mabye 6 of surfing the web. Not a huge deal to me as I will simply get some form of extended battery for when i need more than that.

So is MS gonna hold an event before release where you know...people are actually allowed to use it and stuff? Comes out pretty soon, and for a flagship product...

the surface cake had the time set as 9:14 so most likely sept 14th . And yes i'm going to assume people will be able to use them.

Those at the last event were most likely just protoypes and not ye prodution run.

Ah yeah forgot about the cake thing. Would be nice if that date was true. Apple event then MS event then another apple one later. Good times all around for tech.

Apple and Oranges comparison. We've never seen a Microsoft OS on Tegra.

windows 8 is what OCT 24th ? So they can't do it much later. I bet Nokia + windows phone on the 5th a week later you get Surface RT on the 14th. That way you get MS news before and after the apple stuff

So how does RT handles background music playing, is there a notification system?
Are there any alternate Web browsers in the store yet?

It plays music in the background just fine and there is some sort of notification system, yes. There is no notification center like in iOS and Android, but you get a notification pop up that vanishes after few seconds and after that, you see something on the live tile of the app.

As for alternate browsers, they all will be running with IE10's rendering engine in Windows RT.

What about quick controls for the background music player: pause, rewind, skip track etc?
Where are those hidden or does that require switching to the app/using multiple panels?

Still no price hint for the Pro version ?

I'm fairly certain they hinted at the price when it was revealed. something about being comparable to other devices in this class: meaning ultrabooks.

so I'd say 1 grand is possible. or plus minus a few hundred.
