Is there a good grip for the 3DS? aka my hands hurt after using this thing

PDAir case is what I went with and it's been great. All I needed was a bit more size and less hard edges. Soft leather really makes all the difference for me.

Is the inside of that case lined with abrasive granular plastic like PDAir's other offerings? If so, your 3DS must look like you took a Brillo pad to it. No idea why anyone buys that companies products, fucking plastic lining instead of a soft fabric or suede.

I just purchased the Hori Mario Kart wheel to use as a standard grip. 12 bucks on amazon isnt bad.

sounds like it should be awesome.

Those slide pad covers any good? I realized playing Zelda OoT that the thing slides off my thumb very easily.

Also the Hori Wheel rocks. Only small negative is that the shoulder buttons are very easy to press, so you can't rest your fingers on them.

I also would like to know this. Slider pad thing is terrible.
I initially really disliked the slider, but eventually realised I was holding it incorrectly (for me, anyway). I would put the tip of my thumb within the groove, and there would be no grip. Eventually, I used stopped using the tip of my thumb and used the underside, as if I was pressing a button on a normal controller. I've had no problems since.

I like this one.

3DS Comfort Grip

Pros:
Handle grips is under the 3DS
Soft silicone that doesn't slip out of your hands
Has an edge to it that prevents the bottom screen lip from marking up the top screen

Cons:
Lint loves it
It's not super tight
Because it's not tight and it's silicone, it's not coming out of any pocket very easy

I originally bought this as a cheap "it'll do" until I found something I liked better - but I haven't really. I did like the NERF case for the DS Lite because it felt better on my hands but have not purchased one for my 3DS since I've been okay with this one. That could be another option though.

Update!

I received my Hori Mario Kart 7 wheel.

its amazing.. that's all there really is.. I paid 12 bucks with shipping from Amazon.

my review would be spot on with kokonoe a few posts back.

anyone on the fence?? just get it.

Thanks to everyone posting impressions and reviews. I was looking for a grip, and ended up going for the Hori wheel due to the positive comments here.

It's fantastic, I can actually play Kid Icarus now!

I got the Hori wheel and the CTA hand grip. They should be here in a few weeks.

Cool. KI and long sessions of Mario Kart make my hand hurt.

Just bought this one! Sorry for the bad quality.

Just in case anyone else is still looking for a 3DS grip, I also have this one (reviewed by Lupin3 in #135). I agree with Lupin3's comments.

It is a great 3DS grip that, while bulky, makes it much more comfortable to hold the 3DS (especially during long Mario Kart sessions). It has a nice, matte, rubber-like coating that does not slip.

It looks like this grip is now available via a 3rd party seller on Amazon:

I didn't order it from there, so I can't vouch for the vendor, but it looks exactly like the one I have.

That's fail.

This is the one:

Probably the only handheld with ergonomics in mind.

VITA_02_620x350.jpg

I really really really prefer Nintendo handhelds. I loved the SP because at least it was really light and well balanced. I think all the DS systems have been ergonomic nightmares and the 3DS is the worst because it's so top-heavy and has that terribly-placed D-Pad. In other words I want Nintendo games on a Vita shaped console.

XL Grips

^ "CYBER" brand... have only seen it on Japanese websites so far

^ From some Chinese company. In the second pic, it looks like it blocks the headphone jack though. Seems to have a black version too.

They all seem to be releasing sometime in the beginning of October.

I wonder if Hori will make an XL wheel too?

Just ordered the CTA regular grip. Seems it will be really helpful when Pokemon X & Y come out. For extended periods of gaming. Will have to take it off and apply the Circle Pad Pro for Monster Hunter Ultimate.

I might need to get one of these. Been playing some extended sessions of EO4 and Fire Emblem and I think I'm developing carpal tunnel. After about 45 minutes my right hand goes numb. After an hour and a half I get a terribly painful cramp in my right thumb (where it connects to my wrist, more like my hand than thumb I guess). I can feel it now a bit actually and I haven't played since last night.

It's worse when I'm in bed on my back for some reason. And worse when I use the d-pad (which is weird because that's my left hand, where I don't feel any problems).

The 3DS is incredibly uncomfortable to use.

Seeing the thread about holding the dualshock 3 made me remember this thread.

I have to say, I find both the 3DS and 3DS XL terribly uncomfortable. I'm trying to play Luigi's Mansion right now and my hands just can't take it.

I've tried just holding the 3DS with the tips of my fingers (palm of hand isn't touching any part of the 3DS). I've also tried gripping it very tightly with the sides of the 3DS buried into my palms.

I know it sounds ridiculous because I know there are so many who love the system, but I honestly can't find a perfect grip. I play my Vita for hours on end with no trouble.

i've been waiting impatiently for a CTA grip for the XL

Me too.

What's up with the lack of 3DS XL accessories? AFAIK, there's exactly one case (Hori) and one grip (DreamGear) currently available. Did the accessory makers abandon ship after the OG 3DS?

Lucky Japanese gamers get stuff like this:

I strongly considered importing, but damn $30 for a piece of plastic is just too much (and that's with "free international shipping" that's un-trackable, un-insured, and probably takes months).

Oh man that would be awesome to have. I like the size and feel of the XL, but it's just to blocky to be all that egonomic. Playing with a styus helps to exacerbate the issue. I might just order one and eat the cost.

I was considering gutting a controller and making my own. No idea how that would turn out...

Anyone think we get another 3DS redesign around E3 this year? Maybe a more comfortable version, haha?

I hope not, they should be busy with other things right now. Anyway, their head of ergonomic testing seems to be some weirdo with crab pincers so I don't expect to see much improvement in that area.

Hahaha. True. I'm glad I found this thread. Had started to think I was the only one. I literally can't play LM for more than like half an hour.

It is more comfortable, smoother edges, better for larger hands, but it's still not that great for extended play sessions.
The thing with the XL is it's so top-heavy. Not sure if this makes sense, but when I'm holding it, I actually feel like the bottom of the 3DS is pressing UP into my hands because of the top screen's weight.

Overanalyzing...I know.

Hmmm...sounds like Circle Pad Pro or the hori wheel is the best way to go.

As much as I love the CPP's ergomic shape, especially on the XL, I wouldn't keep it on all the time because it renders the stock R button almost useless. It becomes hard to reach. The R/ZR on the CPP don't work unless the game has CPP support.

I wish the Hori wheel had an XL version.

Yeah, my hands go numb from playing LM after about 30 minutes too. They put the d-pad and circle pad so close to the edge, I just can't get a natural grip at all.

Ironically, the most comfortable game for me is Kid Icarus: Uprising. Love the stand.

sorry for bumping old thread but I didn't want to make new one and this isn't really new thread worthy.

Had old xbox 360 pad with broken LB so I thought I would try to make it into grip for 3ds.

Still need to figure out how to make it lock in. When using d-pad 3ds wobbles annoyingly. But it's completely playable and it's quite comfy too.
