Forza Horizon - Fall 2012 - Developed by PlayGround Games

We need some new media or this Kindergarten nonsense will continue... jesus.
Amen to that.
I thought the embargo lifted a couple of days ago? I was expecting a shit-load of videos by now. I'm interested to see what variety Horizon offers in different events and changes in geography etc.
I hope we haven't already basically seen most of what it has to offer..!

New Age Gaming PR Damage Control™

What we're witnessing more and more in journalism/presentation of new games is absolute move towards showing upcoming games in rigidly controlled environment.

Every month there is less and less actual press-demos being sent out, there is no pre-release beta-discs for journalists to play anymore and all information is becoming extremely controlled.

More and more games are being presented in closed environments, with cherry-picked journalists/community owners who gets an exclusivity for showing/previewing the game under drastically strict NDA.

Online communities have become very important turning point for PR people at publishers, so any potential backslash or premature reaction to something have become greatest enemy. Avoidance of any pre-release publicly visible criticism is Prerogative #1 because too much money is at stake to be lost by some individuals who are voicing their either elaborate or non-elborate criticism of some pre-release code given to them to dissect.

Sad times have come and it will get worse in the future.

All we need now is a RX7 and a R32 and were set to recreate some initial d downhill runs.

Matter of fact how cool would it be if the next game took place in Japan :0

Frankly, after the influx of all the bloggers posing as journalists (and let's face it, even the most serious gaming "journalists" lack proper education for the job), and a number of situations that probably culminated in the whole Denis Dyack clusterfuck, I can't say I'm too surprised or too unhappy about it. This is just the consequence, the root of the problem lies elsewhere. But that's a discussion better left for another thread.

i blame the internet!

Doesn't seem like it'll be big. A shame. I'm all for TDU size maps. It looks like there'll be a fair amount of roads to drive in and it's certainly not bad, lots of roads as I've said, and possibly dirt roads aren't being shown there either.

I just like the maps FUEL-big. BIGGER EVEN. ALL OF THE EARTH TO DRIVE IN.

you want me banned because i made fun of dan greenawalts baldness? thanks for proving my point of forza fans being super sensitive haha

No, because you're just trolling at this point and, running out of things to try and make a big deal out of, you turned to insulting the guy who made it. It's every bit as irrelevant as the banned 'Gabe is fat' response.

You don't like the direction you think Forza has taken. Fantastic. I think everyone who has half an interest in the game has heard enough about your disappointment already.

216 roads to drive. I like the sound of that.

how many did tdu have?

No idea, but I'm going to guess somewhere near a gazillion. Maybe two gazillions.

I don't need a gazillion though. Just enough to have nice long free roams, some good variety that showcases each car and driving style, and a scale that's large enough to get me lost for a while, but small enough for me to go back to my favorite stretches over time. So I don't expect TDU in size and scope honestly, but maybe Ibiza from TDU2 with a little more care time put into it, and even that is a huge space.

Ibiza size would be incredible. Sadly, I don't even think it's going to be half the size...

HP never really felt like it had that many roads though. Sure as shit not going to be as open as FH, either. When you think about it, that every part of that map will be driveable, it's incredibly epic.

Not TDU1/2 epic, but not bad.

I can't say I believe this yet. But I'd love to be proven wrong. Roads sure, but how much can we drive off those roads I wonder? And I'm not just talking about specific off road paths. May not make that much of a difference to the end result regardless, but it just the kind of thing I can see being more limited than we'd expect.

Its not TDU. There is some freedom to go off road but Dan said in an interview that they wont let you get stuck in a ditch.

Yeah but that's because they have roads that go everywhere. No sports cars going up mountainsides unfortunately. It was a fun aspect of TDU but it's not a deal breaker.
I still doubt that very much. It depends on whether the restrictions are imposed with invisible walls or with plainly unreachable areas. But I seriously hope they're not saying there are still hard limits to where you can and can't drive. If I can't take a 458 off-road, I'll be very upset.

I'm under the impression paved and dirt roads will be completely walled off from their surroundings (in other words no real off roading). It'd be cool if they weren't but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I imagine will be restricted to paved roads, dirt roads and official short-cuts. And I'm guessing the game map will be surrounded by canyons or sheer cliff faces if this "see it, drive it" mantra isn't hogwash.

how many did tdu have?

I tried to search for the exact data but I couldn't find it.

However, I found this numbers: Game PR states that length of roads is over 1000 miles. However, it seems that actual total length of all roads is slightly under 3000 miles (4828 km, Explorer Achievement explanation gave me this number). Strange discrepancy, but since I didn't actually fully finish the TDU I can't vouch with my in-game statistics.

Road around the island is 118 miles long (190km, Island Tour Achvmnt), so that is roughly the overall *size* of the area.

Also there are 120 different missions in total.

Guys @ 2:36 he explains the where you can drive clearly.

Yea. You can pretty clear see from the videos that you're limited to the road and maybe a few meters to the side of the road at most in terms of where you can take your car.

Sounds like there'd be a lot more work that they're not willing to do going into debugging the game if cars could go anywhere. Probably allows them to keep the visuals/performance up as well, only having to render the closer stuff in higher resolutions and whatnot.

EDIT: I did see something on the screen in one of the videos that said like 6/206 roads discovered or something. Doesn't sound like a whole lot, but I'm not entirely sure what they consider as a 'road'.

Sounds like the world of high end auto journalism.

Well there are also golf courses you can drive on, and there are some areas where you are allowed to go off road, its just in controlled settings rather then the let me see what happens if I try to drive there approach of TDU.

NICE

Have they said if there will be much to do in terms of exploration of the world?
All I know about is 'Barn finds', which I'm guessing act something similar to finding wrecks in Test Drive Unlimited. As you get close to one, the game will let you know, but you still have to find it yourself. Then I guess you have it repaired and 'after some time has passed' its added to your garage.

Don't know how many there are, or how the game lets you know you're near one, or how long it takes for a barn find to get added to your car collection.
