Fuse (formally OverStrike) Re-Reveal (and Impressions), releasing Q1 2013

I should have touched on this. I could be misremembering here, but I remember seeing snippets of environments with snow, jungle, and sand. In the preview stuff we saw on the presentation screen, it was very very vibrant. Please correct me if I'm wrong, jstevenson.

The TV's we played on seemed a tad more washed out, but I assume that is because they were connected to dev kits and probably not calibrated, etc (who knows, honestly).

The only thing I like about the changes made is that the female characters feel less sexualized in their designs. Everything else that I see and read about this game make it out to be just like other games out there.

The original look of Overstrike had a fun air about, now the color palette is muted and drab. Was it really necessary to make Dalton's energy shield shit green when the original light blue pops so much more? Why remove the orange accents from the main characters for the flat grey-ish blue hues they now sport? Hell, even the enemies had more color and life to their designs.

I'm honestly surprised that this is an EA and Insomniac collaboration. This looks more like something 505 Games or Deep Silver and some unknown developer would produce. Sorry to say, if this really is the big multiplatform outing being made at Insomniac, I believe that this will do abysmally.

I had big hopes that after Resistance tanked and the announcement of Ratchet and Clank: FFA, Insomniac was getting back to what made them such a beloved studio. I guess that isn't the case.

As a huge Resistance/R&C fan, from what I have read I'd rather take R2 COOP as standalone with like 10 new maps. I rarely would say something like this, but the EA fingerprint is pretty clear on this one.

If this does release in March, it's going to bomb so hard. Like 100000 copies tops hard.

Why, specifically?

if the clearances come through, I think so. the trailer is awesome. The Fuse Weapons and their effects are pretty cool and really help give the game its own feel
Actual gameplay footage?

We have enough serious/grounded-in-reality shooters, why add this to the list? I love Insomniac and have almost all of their games, but I'm just not feeling this.

Ugh...Gritty, mature, realistic. We have more than enough shooters that have those qualities. Coming this late in the console cycle, in a packed month, as a new IP spells doom to me. The more funny, cartoony style at least helped differentiated it from the pack. Also, I hate the name change. Overstrike sounded much better.

Visually it looks extremely bland. Shame.

wait till you see video, it's tough to show the game given how insane stuff gets with weapon effects.

oh one thing that hasn't been mentioned but is in the video and will please RFOM fans... towers of spherical canisters of Fuse that becoming bouncing balls of doom are in.

Comparing the two a little closer I must say I liked the original character designs a lot more. Everyone had a more distinct look. Dalton looked older and more like an almost "too old to be doing this" vet. Gave him more character and separated him more from the drove of dark haired, white, male leads in a million other shooters. Jacob looks like a stock black action hero counterpart to Dalton. They bulked him up and gave him generic armor. A far cry from the slender, bro, with the marksman glasses, with an actual hair style that was neither bald (nor the simple flat texture on the scalp) or full-blown afro most black characters seem to have. He also had a clean tailored look to his armor and clothes. Izzy is missing her trench coat and her 90's grunge, Jubilee style she had before. Navy is no longer the prim-looking homage to 60's spy women as found in No One Lives Forever. Basically they've all been given variations of the same generic uniform which is pretty lame. Before they looked like a team of elite professionals from very different background with very different training and skills assembled to do what no other team could do. They were like a Mission Impossible type team. Now they look like just a group of soldiers with boring generic uniforms. The biggest disappointment to me is what they did to Jacob though. Wtf? Hopefully he's still the borderline psychotic he was in the reveal. He's ex LAPD so I hope that doesn't mean now he's a stoic, street-smart, type like a Tyrese character or something.

Except it isn't gritty (unless blood = gritty?)It's very clean and "sci-fi". There weren't tons of F bombs dropped, or dude bro talk. Mature in blood and gore? Sure. realistic? Well as realistic as crystallizing enemies and creating mini-black holes can be, I guess.

I just didn't get the feel that this was any of that, but continue to skim over any impressions from me or the media, and instead latch onto stupid industry buzzwords used to completely misrepresent what the game is.

Why, specifically?

New IP in very popular genre (you might as well read that as over saturated as the popular catchphrase is) that on the outside (I haven't played the game yet, obviously) looks like many other games with easy to forget name releasing on the most popular month for AAA games doesn't exactly scream GOLD JERRY GOLD

I don't understand you people. This looks nothing like "any other shooter".

Looks more in line with Vanquish then anything else. Looks like once again GAF decided to hate on a game even before seeing it.

Resistance had blood and gibs.

Many games do, but Overstrike looked awesome and I'm really bummed that Fuse is going a different direction. I was really looking forward to Overstrike because it looked like a mix between two of my favorite games: R&C and Battlefield: Bad Company.

Fuse doesn't look all that interesting to me.

The legal stuff is probably due to some licensed music in the trailer, I can't imagine any other reason.

Well okay, I'm not passing judgement just yet! The previews make it sound intriguing to be honest. As a third-person shooter is it more like Uncharted or Gears of War in gameplay?

btw...a recent TPS with a MACHOOR storyline was colorful as hell(Spec Ops), but not cartoony though.

Dude did you play R2 Co Op mode? Best FPS Co Op mode ever.

Are you able to shed some light on what legal reasons the trailer was blocked for?

I can't, we originally did detail it, but that could make it harder to get clearance. So hang tight. EA has top people working on it.

We were in the office until past midnight dealing with it as it was a late thing yesterday

Well, I didn't feel it was any of those things. Clearly I was a fan of what I played, and your tastes may differ from my own, but it was very much not a shoot shoot bang bang co-op shooter in name only. Borderlands, Gears, Army of Two, etc. These games all may as well be single player titles, since co-op literally only means "Here's an extra person to shoot with".

In Fuse, there were literally sections you simply could not clear with one player, and you needed all 4 to complete. This is why there is a "leap" system if you play by yourself.

Whatever is going on in this screen looks kind of amazing, but calling the character design generic is being too kind, it's just plain boring. Everbody is wearing grey body armor and jeans, it's beyond awful. The shots give the impression of an amazing sci-fi firefight being waged by unpainted lead figurines.

Just punching in to post that I can't wait to play a 4 players co-op game with skill trees and crazy weapons/tools made by Insomniac.

Looks pretty bland, and co op being a big sell makes it more of a turn off. I think I would have rather seen what it would look like with the original art style. This is like a reverse Borderlands situation.

I see this bombing hard.

It's an EA Partners game. They have a more successful kill rate than the Madden curse does.

Honestly it isn't like either. Both Uncharted and Gears of War are very basic in that you're just taking cover and shooting (though Uncharted did add some stealth). This requires more nuanced play between all characters using the leap system.

Traversal was also different from both. In Uncharted, you're pressing buttons to climb, and it's a bit slower. In Gears, you're simply too heavy to do all that. In Fuse, you'll be zipping around the map, flying over and behind cover, climbing walls and balconies very quickly, etc. The "platforming", so to speak, feels a lot like Assassins Creed, in that you hold your sprint button and GO, and all of the other stuff is handled for you. It felt much faster than standard co-op stuff. Also, if anyone on your team dies completely (you fail to revive them in the given time) it's game over.

Edit: JESUS Mclaren777, please quote those HUGE images. :P

The game was fun, the art style really wouldn't have changed that for me. Maybe if you're into that kind of thing more than mechanics and fun, sure. That said, the game is still light hearted when it comes to the teams writing and banter. It literally only felt like the art style shifted.

this might be true but it lost the edge that distinguish this game form all the other TPS since now it looks like just another one of those dude bro shooter. You only know the difference after you played it.

In that case, hopefully they release a demo so people can judge for themselves :)

Could you please answer a question 8byte? Is there some kind of powers/tools combinations from each different class/player? Something like Magicka?

From the Polygon article: http://www.theverge.com/gaming/2012...-game-formerly-known-as-insomniacs-overstrike

Just admit you want that CoD/Gears/popular brown shooter money instead of doing something somewhat unique. My interest definitely is down the toilet at this point. Especially with this coming out in March. There are a bunch of alternatives.
Looking at Borderlands 2, I'm not even sure this is a wise decision from a business perspective. You obviously can make a ton of money with stylized, over the top and funny coop shooters - and I'm sure the tone and style is a major reason for its success. I'm sick of brown and gray shooters, but Borderlands 2 is the first game I've preordered in years.

they wear different outfits depending on what the mission (snow etc) calls for...

Honestly, I'll be surprised if Insomniac survives this. Game looks generic, released along with two other (and bigger) co-op shooters also published by EA and other big IPs...it has bomba written all over it. At least release it in August or something like that...

Well, not specifically, but there is a lot of incentive to combine abilities to deal with threats quickly.

For instance, Izzy can chain crystallize a group of enemies (when she hits one, it can chain to others) and Dalton can use his shield blast to take out the entire group in one hit (as opposed to other characters having to shoot each one individually to kill them).

When players shoot / kill enemies through Daltons shield, they are given XP for specifically using the shield. So as not to make Dalton feel worthless, he also get's XP. It doesn't seem like much, since the XP is less than you'd get from a kill, but when you've got the entire squad behind your portable or stationary shield getting kills, your XP soon trumps what everyone else is getting.

Also, XP was referred to as "Fuse Points". I believe that's what you use to buy stuff from the skill tree.

Man, if what you say is true 8byte, then they used the worst possible set of screens to sell this. Its obvious EA wants this to look like a dudebro shooter, and are going to push and sell it that way, regardless of any levels that make it look different.

On that note, i'm sure the game will be fun to play. I've been loyal to Insomniac since Spyro, and even more so since Ratchet and Clank. But man, seeing the art design go really bums me. Those screenshots make it even worse. Please, please show me something in the trailer.

Should I be bothered? That is, any word about Move support?

Looking forward to seeing the gameplay trailer.

Insomniac Games doesn't make titles that are 60fps anymore. Instead, they've focused on things like particle effects, higher enemy counter, texture resolution, etc.

It's very difficult to sell humor and gameplay in action stills, wouldn't you agree? How would you propose they do that? Caption them? :P Just wait until you see / play it. It's definitely not standard cover-based co-op that we're used to.
