Psy's Gangnam Style Music Video

I'm judging it by his actions in concerts, how his fans (in huge numbers at that) adore him, his appearances on Korean TV shows, his "look", and how he has handled his new found expansion of success. He's also educated in music, does his own thing, knows how to make good beats, fun songs in general.

Can't say that about most if not all the other kpop artists.

He stands out. He's the Korean Michael Jackson.
Not sure about your last sentence, but it can be true, you seem to know him much better than me, I only know him because of this song. Just to be clear, I was talking about judging a boyband/girlband only because of MV, not PSY, I hope you weren't feeling attacked by my post, if this was the case I'm sorry. A lot of people just do "Ugh, boyband/girlband, terrible" or "Ugh, it's all about pretty boy/girl", "They can't do anything they are only pretty", and for the majority of times maybe it's true, but not always. I actually totally agree with you about the first part. I just don't agree that he's the only k-pop artist with all those quality, maybe some have only some of them, this does not mean that they are not good or that this makes PSY less "special".

Maybe I haven't been watching the right interviews, but Psy isn't exactly oozing charisma in his American appearances.

He's pretty obviously putting on a too cool for school act in the ones I've seen, and I dig it. He's probably pretty nervous since it's so rare for a korean artist to hit it huge internationally.

Prior to Gangnam Style, Psy wasnt really that popular in Korea. His single and album sales were small compared to other kpop acts and he rarely won any of the weekly music show awards during his promotions. The huge numbers of fans you see at those concerts are due to the success of Gangnam Style in Korea and the US.

So it seems to be about to break 200 million. Crazy.

I swear, something weird is going on within the realm of the biggest hits. For the last decade almost everything had been very predictable and repetitive (pop, pseudorap/R&B/whatever), while in the past year we had what, Adele, Michel Telo, Gotye, and now PSY. Compared to previous years, that seems like quite wide range of genres and styles, weird. Sure, we had Call Me Maybe in the meantime, but even that wasn't by some huge household name. While most of the carefully produced and prepared "hits" failed to reach the same levels of popularity (wth happened to Gaga, she had fallen off the face of the Earth like 1.5 year ago).

Release a shitty album and such a thing happens, although Fame Monster is a pretty tough act to follow.

PSY-related question: does South Korea use YouTube like we do in the West, or do they have a local equivalent (like Japan has NicoNico?) Curious how many of those bazillion views are actually from SK.

Too much. Too much, I tells ya. This used to be my favorite thing to listen to when I was high/drunk. I think I'm done listening to it especially when I was at a Sheesha bar enjoying my Sheesha when I see this 6 or so people synchronously tell one of their friends, "You haven't seen Gundam (sic) style? Oh my god! It's all over the internet" and proceed to get up and start dancing the dance.

When I left the bar, I see them in the parking lot still dancing to it as if they never stopped.

The internet; it's leaking!

EDIT: OH GOD! Some guy in the next cubicle was explaining to this coworker how "The man has to serve the lady. You know, that video: Gangnam Style."

OH NO NO NO ON NON NON NONO NO!!!!!!!!!!!! IT'S TOO MUCH!

MY MIIIIIIIIIIIND!

Seems like a really cool guy in his interviews and everything else. Glad he's doing well, the song is catchy and fun. I also give him props for having the guts to do that insane dance, lol!!!!

Gotta pick up some girls with those moves??

Really doubt that 2NE1,WG and SNSD will ever break through in the U.S. girlbands aren't really popular same goes with boy bands these days. But a rock band like CNBLUE would have a chance because of their type of music would fit the U.S. well. Not sure how well their english is but they sound good when singing in english in their songs for people not to notice that their not fluent in english.

Edit: CNBLUE speaking in English, no bad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ue1rS8X6IBg

No offense taken. I'm fine with "boy/girl" bands. In fact, even though I gave them a lot of crap back in the day, the Backstreet Boys were actually a fantastically talented group singing wise, they were assembled well vocally.

I remember seeing a video of him doing "Right Now" and it seemed to have a large group. Not the size of Gangnam style we've seen, but still a large amount of people that rivals many big bands in the states.

The video really is half the greatness of the whole song. I put it in my playlist sometimes, but I find myself wanting to watch the video immediately when it comes on.

I guess it's a cultural thing, but the dancing girls in the video are off-putting. All of them are skinny and bony, except one in black shorts shown briefly around the :55 mark. It's like they have no care for voluptuous, full-figured women.

he is in asia.

Yeah, that's it, I'm totally importing a physical copy of Psy's album.

I'll be like the wicked not your stereotypical Asian guy blasting Korean pop music.

Hello Jado, everyone has their own opinion on what is beautiful.

They're generally not as thick as black and Hispanic women, but fit, curvy Asian women are still common enough. Someone took the extra measure to include mostly bony girls in the video.

Yes, SMT. I was stating my own preference as well. More girls like the one at :55 would've been cool, but I understand that's probably not what Koreans are used to seeing.

Man this guy exploded. I'm real happy for him :D

In other news I CANNOT FUCKING STOP LISTENING TO KNOCK OUT BY GD AND TOP. What makes K-POP so addictive? It's like some weird thing that makes it tolerable. Maybe it's because I don't understand the lyrics

You crazy son.

In fact it was more of a general statement than directed at you, I think that if I post for example a Super Junior MV here, watching the video is completely different than actually knowing how they really are.

Out of curiosity, how big bands in the states do? 60000? More? If you guys are interested in the PSY album sales there is an actual monthly South Korean chart with numbers that I can post it.

Can you please support Super Junior Shindong and 2BIC as well? :)

What's "big"? One Direction did 176,000 in their first week in the US.

Sorry, with the talk about album sales I've probably confused people. The first question was about how many people attend to a concert of a big band in the states.

He's easily gonna overtake 1D and Carly Rae in youtube views. I am definitely gonna be sooo happy.

If you're talking over the course of the tour, that's completely dependent on how long the artist wants to tour.

If you're talking about single venues, that's completely dependent on the venue. In Lady Gaga's last tour, the majority of the US venues were below 15,000.
