this thread title sounds like the worst of things

and it's actually well animated, even though the characters look really off

Where are the gungans?

In a surprisingly selfless act of charity, Emperor Palpatine slaughtered them down to the last woman and child as soon as he took power. The operation was personally overseen by Lord Vader, who was reported to have shouted "STOP CALLING ME ANNI!" during the resignation of Senator Binks.

Man Vader is/was such a boss.

Looked amazing. A+ for the effort.

However, they should have remembered that there is no atmosphere in space.

Loved that! thanks OP.

edit: this reminds me when I was in highschool I had a poster I pulled out of some comic book magazine that had an manga/anime style luke in an x-wing and it was fucking awesome.

heh found it!

Wow, that was a really impressive vid. I honestly want to see more! I personally find Otaking's work a bit over-stylised but it works better here than it did in the Dr. Who anime video.

Loved the manga, wasn't so keen on the Adam Warren covers. Wow, was it really 10 years since they came out in English?!

oh come on. Why we gotta have this shit in here?

Star Wars came from the mind of George Lucas, so if you have to bring him into it, it's a tribute to him if anything.
That's a simplistic way (also wrong) of looking at things.

Ralph McQuarrie is probably the person that deserves that credit, if it were down to a single person.

I agree with you, but Ralph's work wouldn't have been popularized if not for George Lucas. But that's not my point.

We can probably both agree that it'd be nice if we could have a Star Wars thread someday without shitting on George Lucas in some way.

and John Williams right behind McQuarrie

The only thing that really stuck out to me was when one of the TIE ships shoots gundam style missiles. Do missiles even exist in the Star Wars universe much less gundam style ones? Still as one of the comments stated, this is the best Star Wars since 1983.

Yeah, I think Lucas deserves the flack he gets (honestly he deserves even more, film revisionism is disgusting) but the way it pops up in any Star Wars thread is kinda weird. Like, what does he have to do with this?

Anyways, yeah John Williams deserves huge credit too. Star Wars was definitely a collaborative effort. Wouldn't feel right giving credit to just one person.

Gundam missiles? Do you mean the Itano circus? That's not just Gundam!

I'll have to give credit where it is due: he's pretty fucking good at making 3D models look like 2D animation, far better than most people who try doing that. He could probably do some pretty good work on a cel-shaded video game. I'd go as far as to say that he does a better job than certain professional studios (though admittedly he had more free time to get all the lighting and whatnot right). I also like his colors, and some of his compositions look cool. However, it's pretty obvious that his 2D animation has a lot of issues (though significantly less noticeable in this video, since it's full of 3DCG), especially given that he's in his mid-30s and has been drawing and animating for a pretty long time.

Normally, I wouldn't be dissecting someone who's just making free cartoons for the Internet to such an extent. But Otaking is a special case. For years on end, he's been shamelessly trolling everyone with his 'superior animation taste' in order to become a controversial online figure and draw attention to his work. I think it's blatantly obvious that he doesn't truly believe a lot of his nonsensical ~ANIME EXPERT~ statements (especially given that he's contradicted himself in the past), but he does believe SOME of it, and it's getting in the way of his improvement as an animator. He wants to bring back the feeling of 80s OVAs and movies like Gunbuster and Wings of Honneamise, but he'll never do that because he doesn't understand the subtleties of good movement.

You like his colors? I think they're way too cold. It gives it that "wannabe anime" look right off the bat.

And the overshading still looks bad, but it's otaking. He'll never let go of that.

The nitpick in me looked at those imperial pilots and wondered why they didn't all look like Jango Fett.

Still, most impressive.
