The Netflix Recommendation Thread of Dope Movies

I just started watching The IT Crowd. God damn is this show hilarious. I'm laughing out loud multiple times per episode.

I also highly recommend Better Off Ted, that show is the fucking bomb. Really funny, really smart, and really well acted. Too bad it was canceled two seasons in, it really is a gem.

Better off Ted is my Firefly. I will go the grave cursing those who caused its early demise. Love, love, love that show.

I'll never forget the early ep when they installed the racist sensor system. Wish that show lasted longer.

Exit Humanity is really good if you like zombie movies.

Just finished this and thought it was absolutely fantastic, one of the best surprises from Netflix in a while. I highly recommend the rest of you watch this. This is why I love GAF, wouldn't have known about it otherwise.

I watched the trailer and it looked really low budget but I'll probably give it a shot.

Why did I wait so long before watching Sherlock? I should have trusted you guys. Just watched the first ep last night, goddamn it was good TV!

Season 4 of Damages up

Oh... I just recently watched all of these. I have to say though by the end of season 3 it was starting to wear a little thin. So not sure about getting into season 4.

Hmm...

US Anglophile GAF may be interested in a TV series called Cracker. It's an English crime drama about an alcoholic gambling addict psychologist made in the 90s and it is fantastic. Been watching it recently and I am shocked by how subtle and modern the series is - it's very much a serialised story with good character arcs and the acting is wonderful. You may also enjoy struggling to understand the Mancunian and Scots accents.

The cover art on US Netflix is atrocious though, it is in no way representative of the quality of the show!

Oh go on, you've wasted three seasons worth of your time already, what damage can one more do? :P

I watched some indie movies on nf last night. This one movie named mad world is fucking nuts. Starts out like a poor ass teen movie and then shit just goes crazy.

I'm really tempted to drop Netflix in favor of Hulu Plus. I find that I watch TV series 80% more than I do any movies, and Hulu has pretty much the same selection of TV shows, but also keeps current with them. If I'm more of a "watch a whole series in a month" kind of guy, Hulu is the better option, right? And they have a pretty huge list of movies as well, correct?

They have commercials... or at least they did when I had it. I could not stomach paying to watch commercials. That's why I got rid of cable.

Yeah, this is the big difference for me. For a while I was paying for both because Hulu+ had criterion movies and a better TV selection. But having to watch commercials with TV that I'm paying for is ludicrous. Netflix has enough TV for me.

Not quite. While Hulu+ has the latest eps of the latest shows it rarely offers the entire series, usually episodes disappear a few weeks after they air.

Netflix is better for watching entire series. Hulu+ is better for watching the latest episodes of shows like The Daily Show, Colbert Report, The Office, Modern Family, Raising Hope, Hells Kitchen etc...

Hulu+ has hundreds of Criterion Collection films for less than the price of one of their DVDs a month. If it means anything to you, Huluhas a much better anime selection as well.

Thanks. I'll check it out.

Not especially. As other people have pointed out, Hulu doesn't tend to archive its shows. And there's the really irritating commercials. Movie selection isn't great. Having both Netflix and Hulu works really well because they compliment each other.

Really? I'm having trouble watching this. I've tried and stopped twice. Apart from a couple interesting zombie designs, I can't find anything to like about this.

So far it's just punishingly slow melodrama overacted by an unconvincing lead. The narrator is an accomplished actor whom I love, but doesn't fit the narrative, which by the way appears to have been penned by an eighth grader (this is not hyperbole, I swear it does). The setting should be interesting, but it's mishandled... not an element about it seems authentic, repeatedly betrayed by the dialog and costume design. Then there are the quick cuts to the animated journal scenes... ugh.

The entire thing feels incredibly disjointed. I can't wrap my head around it. It's all so weird it almost seems experimental. A tinge of that piques my curiosity, making me want to see where it goes... but the rest of my brain is saying "this sucks so bad". Hey guy, scream some more. I certainly prefer it to when you actually speak.

Yeah! I wouldn't pay for cable if it had commercials either. Oh, wait...

Some stuff coming on October 1st, including some James Bond movies as well as new seasons of 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, and The Office:

Some of those dates are wrong--I finished watching Parks & Rec season 4 on Netflix last night. So at least for the NBC stuff it might be worth checking now.

I am hoping FeedFliks' listing of Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared coming on 9/28 are true; I have both on DVD so I don't know why I care, but I do.

Oh yeah, Mulholland Drive...

I go to university, cable is factored into my housing costs. So I don't have a choice on whether to pay for it or not. Also, I rarely watch actual TV on my TV at school.
At my permanent home I record shows and watch them. If I start 10-15 minutes after airtime, I have zero commercials. Plus, I don't pay for cable there either.

Like gaf has said COMMERCIALS......again, commercials. One more thing, commercials. Those dang things are annoying and they actually made them longer by making you wait through 3 of those things. Not forgetting that dang intro at the beginning of every flick. I love hulu....but i also have netflix. Got rid of cable with the quickness once i discovered i only need it for the nba.

EDIT: This mainly applies to shows you find on both hulu and netflix. Why would i pass watching 24 or battlestar Commercial free on netflix for huluplus?

Hulu became useless to me when I found out that you could watch first run episodes on iPad via the ABC and NBC players without the subscription.
