The last two days it has slow down, instead of doing around around 11~12 mil per day it went down to 9~10 mil per day. However today it's already done 10m with several hours still left to go, it should do another 2 to 3 million. Guess it does better during the weekends. Even with the slight slow down it should still hit 400 mil withing two weeks.

This is... Really kind of crazy.

Indeed. First UK number 1 for a Korean artist, and I can't find the last time a non-English language song topped the UK chart, but I suspect we'll be talking nineties. [edit] The last UK #1 to be partly sung in a non-English language was The Ketchup Song by Aserejé, which featured Spanish and English lyrics and topped the charts 19th October 2002 (so about two weeks short of ten years ago). Still haven't found the last song that had no English lyrics whatsoever.

Hey Sexy Lady.

I went to the Dodgers game the other night, and they played this song while the closer was warming up prior to the 9th inning.

Watching thousands of overweight Los Angelenos (very few of them Asian!) doing the horsey dance was pretty hilarious.

Hey Sexy Lady.

Nope, it was We No Speak Americano from 2010. I'd be inclined to dismiss that one, since it was a dance music track where the "lyrics" was just a repeated voice sample, but there you go. Before that, the last foreign language number 1 was La Bamba, from 1987.

So, still an achievement, as Gangham Style has become only the fifth non-English track in the sixty years or so of music charts to reach the UK number one.

Didn't Los Del Rio's Macarena reach number 1 in the UK?

2 weeks? I think it will hit 400 million by this week. Already at 330 million views.

The elevator guy always gets me

It'll be fascinating to see if he can become more than a one-hit wonder outside of Korea. Side note: Do we have a YouTube-specific term for one-hit wonder yet?

Edit: Damn, it'll have broken into the top 10 most viewed videos on YT within the day. Crazy. (Also, now that I've looked at the top 10, I actually now know who the fuck Pitbull is!)

Wiki says it got to number two and no further. As I said, non-English language tracks don't sell in the UK, generally speaking. I imagine this is an exception, largely because the video Minecrafted.

wooosh

Because of this song Psy is gonna try to follow it up with something similar and fail spectacularly. Songs 100% based on videos such as this pretty much guarantee one hit wonders.

It's also been gaining views. People who liked Gangnam style and have recently found this video, have said in the comments that 'Right Now' is even better. I'm sure PSY will be able to create something good and catchy.

Exactly, all PSY needed was for one of his songs to go viral.
I don't think this will be his only hit outside of Korea.. might be hard to top this though haha.

This song has been getting play at almost every bar/club Ive been to in the past few weeks, and everyone seems to know it.

I didn't even realize this was getting so huge outside of the internet, wow.

I guess Scooter Braun is seriously making some magic happen for Psy.

It's pretty entertaining to watch Gangnam Style live in the US where the audience are mostly just lip-syncing and you can tell they just saying gibberish and not the lyrics itself. :D

Super fun, super cheesy video makes for great viral fodder, especially the guy in the elevator. It doesn't take itself at all seriously, it's got personality and it's got a lot of comedic elements. You see it, you want your friends to see it. It becomes cool and then people want to be seen as liking it. Then the hipsters will be "I liked it when it only had 3 million views".

The song is infectiously catchy, so it moves to radio.

The dance is fun, easy and becomes a dance of the moment kind of thing. There have been many dances in pop music that have elevated a song, from the Twist, the Nutbush, Bus Stop, Macarena, etc.. I've done a few steps at work in on several occasions and I'm not the only one. Doing that horse thing down the hallway to someone coming the other way is a funny way to say hello in the mornings (yes, I'm that guy).

This is a great description and a perfect answer to my question. Makes sense now, thanks!
