Mecklemore Is My Favorite Wrapper
120 to change the color? Insane.

Well, 20 dollar to change the color. You get a black one for 599...
Good luck with those 3-5 Mio, MS. Will get one of those from the bargain bin...
All of them just went out of stock.
You get the black one, but have to pay 120 extra to change the color to white.
IMO, they're trying to create a whole new market of 'productivity' tablets (again). Which could be huge.I'm sure they'll still sell a whole bunch of these but I can't help but feel that Microsoft have missed the boat a little here. This holiday season is going to be all about the 7 inchers: iPad Mini, Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD and if it exists, Google's $99 tablet.
it's even funnier when you click the link for 'outside the us' it redirects you to fuck all. yaaaaay.
Well that bodes well for the Pro's price huh? :/
add 300 bucks is my guess.
The device price isn't the real issue, IMO. 499 for 32 GB is okay. The Cover price is the real kicker. I'm not sure I'd pay more than 50 bucks for it.

yeah, the main attractive thing about the Surface reveal was the cover and now it's priced like that, major buzz killer, it's like twice of it should be. Is it really that expensive to make these?

What makes Windows RT better than an iPad, Office 13 and IE10?
I love how MS is betting big on tablets, with Win 8 being sacrificed for every other purpose except touch, and they think a premium price point is a way to make it work.
Good luck with that.

I'm talking out of my ass here but my guess is that they're selling the Surface itself at a loss or a tiny amount of profit, and are making up for the cost by making the covers expensive as shit.
Wait, these have a 1366x768 resolution? I thought they were 1080p at least?

MS has said they won't be selling the surface at a loss.

Well, shit then.
What gives, MS?
"Microsoft, why aren't you undercutting other OEMs? You should totally do that!"
Seriously?

That's the Surface with Windows 8 Pro, coming early next year.
Well for me this is priced to die, instead of a price to die for...

With a price probably in the four digits.
Swing and a miss, Microsoft.

I readily admit that I have no idea what I'm talking about.
Keep in mind Windows 8 takes about 10GBs of that storage. :-/
People expecting competitive pricing were in for a rude awakening as soon as MS announced their AD budget of $1 Billion. If you remember Kinect which was another hilariously overpriced product the AD budget was an astonishig $500 Million. They are attempting to build up the Windows 8 Mindshare here and keep prices high to recoup the investment. At $300 these things would sell themselves and they wouldn't need such a huge marketing push.
