Not very smart Microsoft.

499 is not the right price imo. I think that people will choose an iPad over the Surface, even if the Surface has 16 gig more.

The device price isn't the real issue, IMO. 499 for 32 GB is okay. The Cover price is the real kicker. I'm not sure I'd pay more than 50 bucks for it.

All of them just went out of stock.

it's even funnier when you click the link for 'outside the us' it redirects you to fuck all. yaaaaay.

Well that bodes well for the Pro's price huh? :/

add 300 bucks is my guess.

I'm sure they'll still sell a whole bunch of these but I can't help but feel that Microsoft have missed the boat a little here. This holiday season is going to be all about the 7 inchers: iPad Mini, Nexus 7, Kindle Fire HD and if it exists, Google's $99 tablet.

Curious to see how the UK price shapes up. Likely around £400 sans touch cover. At a guess, they'll probably push the Pro for about £900 to £1000... ack.

IMO, they're trying to create a whole new market of 'productivity' tablets (again). Which could be huge.

gutted, I wanted a pro with 64Gb and a black type cover.

Now I don't.

On the plus side, we'll be getting one for work to test for the CEO. I'll most likely have to configure that for 'some weeks' to get it up and running. will need to take that home a few times.

yeah, the main attractive thing about the Surface reveal was the cover and now it's priced like that, major buzz killer, it's like twice of it should be. Is it really that expensive to make these?

I love how MS is betting big on tablets, with Win 8 being sacrificed for every other purpose except touch, and they think a premium price point is a way to make it work.

Good luck with that.

I'm talking out of my ass here but my guess is that they're selling the Surface itself at a loss or a tiny amount of profit, and are making up for the cost by making the covers expensive as shit.

What's worse is that the type cover is only 30 bucks more than the type cover. Colors are nice and all, but I prefer real keys.

MS is still mainly about OEMs. They're trying to set a bar for those.

Still stupid.

What makes Windows RT better than an iPad, Office 13 and IE10?

Ports, I think. And the Cover, but I guess that's moot now.

MS has said they won't be selling the surface at a loss.

Wait, these have a 1366x768 resolution? I thought they were 1080p at least?

The surface pro is. All RT tablets appear to have 1366x768 res.

Well for me this is priced to die, instead of a price to die for...

Agreed. The iPad is still the better buy imo. Form, Retina and app store. I thought iOS was getting a version of Office anyway?

I think Microsoft missed a potential marketshare gobbler here. When you're entering as the underdog, you need to price yourself far more competitively. See Samsung.

Personally I'd still go with the cheaper Nexus 7 anyway. Smaller screen or not.

"Microsoft, why aren't you undercutting other OEMs? You should totally do that!"

Seriously?

Well, they should be doing something. They need their platform to be successful first, and with OEM's that don't offer competitive price points/products against the market leader, they have a very tough sale, even if RT devices have more features.

But heck, what do I know :) Could very well be that it is successful from day 1 on and the marketing effort works....

People expecting competitive pricing were in for a rude awakening as soon as MS announced their AD budget of $1 Billion. If you remember Kinect which was another hilariously overpriced product the AD budget was an astonishig $500 Million. They are attempting to build up the Windows 8 Mindshare here and keep prices high to recoup the investment. At $300 these things would sell themselves and they wouldn't need such a huge marketing push.

Keep in mind Windows 8 takes about 10GBs of that storage. :-/

LOL MS go premium over iPad? love it.

I am asking now. Who, IN THIS THREAD, is going to buy one?

No not the "getting one for the misses" bullshit, or "getting one from work". Actually spending your hard earned after tax american dollar to buy a RT?

Count the name now.

is that what they said about Windows Phone when they giving xbox 360's with them? MS is no longer in the "it will sell itself" category
