Halo 4 launch trailer (David Fincher, Tim Miller) premiering Oct. 18th

My Halo lore is definitely not the best. I know nothing about the books. The games, or at least I should say their environments, almost have a Star Wars prequels vibe. They're colorful and epic in scope. There's a real sense of space opera, even with the scenes on the human ships. However when I see the trailers, they look more like a dark cyberpunk or THX 1138. It just seems the consistency between the trailers and the actual games are quite stretched.

Well the city of New Mombasa in ODST had a very dark cyberpunk feel to it IMO. So not out of the ordinary .

The trailer really captured the books well.

I would love to see a game that is in the halo universe, but deals with the civil war going on.

For a "Halo 4 launch Trailer"..
Well that sucked.
If i had to rate it. 4
DF what have you done.
*SMH*

Still pumped for Halo4 though, seen enough of leaked vids to please me. And,..better trailers.
Thats looks more like a campaign trailer,Im sure we will have a MP trailer soon.

The problem is that enemies in previous Halo games were well-defined. Everyone knew it was the covenant and what the stakes were.

But, nobody has any idea what Halo 4 is about. Regular people don't know about Prometheans. Nor do they know much about Master Chief's personal story. Someone who has no idea what Halo 4 is about does not have any context for the story.

This trailer shows some evil menacing force scanning Master Chief and revealing the process in which he was created, and also shows a glimpse of the new threat (Prometheans), while giving a glimpse of the larger threat, this new imposing foe who comes face to face with the Master Chief.

That makes the average person curious. Makes them ask who that guy scanning the Chief is. Shows them a glimpse of the Prometheans. Shows them some of the Chief's past and his creation.

Those are all buildups. You can say it wasn't as thrilling, and didn't have a great action scene. BUT, it does make the viewer ask questions, and get excited about the bits and pieces they're receiving about the story in Halo 4. The Chief finally comes face to face with a force as strong as he is. That works. That builds excitement.

I find that everyone I showed this too loves it. But people who already know about these things aren't as excited because it doesn't make them any questions. So they see this as lame. But in your case, its just supposed to be some eye-candy and fanservice. But you should know that regular people don't know about the Chief's past, or that there's a specific new antagonist.

There is a familial aspect in regards to the Spartans, Hasley, trainers and ai's in the book. They did kidnap the spartans, but they also raised them, nurtured them. And this trailer is a hints at where the story could go.

I think it's weird that Fall of Reach suddenly becomes canon while it felt like Halo Reach had nothing in common with the novel.

I though it was mentioned in one of the early novels.
I think one of the novels described him as some almost albino looking guy.

The books reference the Spartans being pale due to spending very long periods time in their armour, therefore reducing direct exposure to sunlight.

The Novel and Reach really didn't have many discrepancies at all aside from the whereabouts of the PoA for an hour or two.

Great ad in that it succeeded in making me actually interested in reading the book. Mainly to get a better understanding of the stealing babies scene. The end of the video gave me a boner and simply made me want to play the game. Job well done.

Is there one book that really tells the story well? I'll add it to my Kindle. I just saw Fall of Reach on Amazon with 300+ reviews and 4.5 average stars. Didnt realize these books were so loved.

Fall of Reach is where you want to start.

The Halo books are pretty decent as far as game-based fiction goes. They're well worth a read, especially if you enjoy the games. Fall of Reach is easily the best Halo book in my opinion, and objectively the most universe-defining, so definitely start with that one.

It's pretty great, but nope.

This. So much this. That music, and the fact that it's showing what fans WANT to see...perfect.

I don't understand what's so hard to get. Nobody cares about this live-action wankery. Show some gameplay, show some CGI, show Chief being Chief. If the game wants to explore the backstory, that's great, but don't cram it into a 2 minute trailer.

I think the fact that everyone is more concerned about when the gameplay trailer is coming out is very telling.

Repost from OT:

That improved it drastically, but the trailer is still overall meh.

I'd say this is incorrect, seeing as how 90% of the live action trailers have been a resounding success with fans and everyone else.

Fall of reach has always been canon, it hasn't suddenly became canon. Halo: Reach had little to do with the novel because it is a different story.

Halo Reach the game is about Noble teams missions while the book is about Masterchief and his teams missions along with a history of his training and abduction.

Why wasn't Jorge with Chief and the other Spartans anyway? I know he didn't exist at the time the novel was written but was there any explanation elsewhere? And the same with the 3 Spartans in Halo wars, Fall of Reach only says 3 Spartans were too busy elsewhere (Not missing) to go on the mission on the PoA.

The version of the novel i read isn't the updated one so that might have been explained.

I've played every Halo. I still really have no clue what's going on. Any quick guide to the Halo story?

Yeah, I'm hoping the Halo 4 OT links to relevant media for backstory for people who don't read every single book and comic and whatever. After Reach I have no idea what's going on, and people are talking about the didact and other things in the OT that seem to be relevant to Halo 4, and I have not a flying fuck what any of it is. I figure I'll probably wind up just reading a wiki synopsis of the books that have come out since then and anything else that seems relevant. This is why I think the trailer would be confusing/boring to anyone that's not already a big Halo fan. Some people are saying that it would make those people curious, I completely disagree.

Well what happens after Halo: Reach does not really matter for Halo 4. Halo 4 starts off where Halo 3 ends (still my favourite ending).

The Didact has been a central character in the Halo books since 2007. The only in-game reference to the Didact before H4 was in a hidden terminal from Halo 3.

I doub Fincher took the gig because he really cared about Halo. I also doubt he was very involved in the creation of the trailer.

I have a feeling Fincher just sat around signing copies of Fight Club for people for 1 day and then called it a wrap.

I'm not sure how a guy that brilliant could help create something so dull.

This is sort of exactly what I'm talking about; there's a ton of back fiction that anyone who's not already heavily invested in the universe doesn't have any clue even exists. A lot of the people I've seen who are excited by the trailer are excited because of these minute universe details and implications, but no one outside of that circle even knows about that shit. I guarantee if I ask 5 of my friends who are big Halo fans but only play the games who the Didact is, they will have no idea what I'm talking about.

Good question and I have been wondering about that as well. I need to read the updated version as well.

I Have been wondering why the Spartan 3's for the most part all have higher ranks than John 117. I know we and the general public know him as "Masterchief" but why would a bunch of new recruit spartan 3's all be commissioned officers?

Little things like that get on my nerves

Monumental broke it down really well:

Well it's just weird that you never see or hear anything about the other spartans, I also can't really recall some giant space battle happening.

And then there's this: http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2010/09/14/bungie-on-the-contradictions-between-halo-reach-and-halo-the-fall-of-reach-novel/
According to Lehto, the "Halo" games are considered prime canon, and anything outside of the games is supplementary, so if there are contradictions, the game's events supersede anything else.

They're basically saying that what happens in the books doesn't matter. So I just found it a little weird that now they seem to have taken it 1:1 into the games trailer

He did make Alien 3.

Alright first of all Fincher was screwed over by Fox when making Alien 3. The extended cut is a much better version of the movie, but generally he constantly butted heads with Fox over his ability to make the movie he wanted to make.

I have the Alien Blu-ray Collection and there is commentary and interviews with everyone except Fincher; he refused to have anything to do with it.

It looks really nice... but that's it.

Halo 3, ODST, and even Reach... vastly superior, fantastic live action AND CGI spots. This was immensely disappointing.

You didn't spend much time in Space so you wouldn't of seen the massive space battle, and the Spartans were trying to defend Reach Station Gamma and what was powering the super MACs, which you don't see in Halo: Reach either. Several things which were only mentioned in books made it into the game - e.g Halsey's Lab . It's always been canon, that quote doesn't mean what happens in the books doesn't matter, it's saying when there is something in the games that contradicts the books, that part of the book has been retconned. It's the same with how Star Wars has different tiers of canon with the movies coming first.

You are completely missing the point. This trailer is designed for people who know nothing about the Halo backstory.

Do you or do you not understand that some menacing foe is scanning the Master Chief's memories?
Do you or do you not understand that the Chief was kidnapped as a boy and then genetically modified and turned into a Spartan?
Do you or do you not understand that Master Chief was fighting weird but aggressive new enemies before he got caught?

If anything, most people that know the fiction are calling this lame BECAUSE they already know this stuff. It's supposed to evoke curiosity. And the fact that you think this doesn't shows how you've completely missed the mark on this.

Go ahead and show this to your friends. They'll all ask who the hell is the new being walking towards the Chief and holding him restrained? It's an ancient evil that has awakened. HALO 4. Play the game to find out whats going on.

everyone needs to watch the GT Halo retrospective ( 4 episodes). Talks about the games, history, MP, and SP.

This, this and this. I really liked the trailer, and yes, I read the books (well, most of them, I'm with Primordium now).

What. She's in that? Damn. I need to play that.

Cool your jets, cowboy. All they did was add the Cryo-chamber display panel opposite the MCs, the display screen has Linda's vitals. So it aligns with the ending of the Fall of Reach, when John puts her in a cryo tube before making the jump to Halo.

What is difficult to comprehend here? The games have been faithful to the books. All other fiction (graphics novels, anime shorts, CGI/Live Action Trailers) have also been faithful to the fiction. In case of minor discrepancies, the games take precedent over the books, but aside from those discrepancies, everything else still stays canon.

What's weird is how anal people get about the most minor of shit that's changed in Halo Reach. And they even released an updated version of the damn book to satiate fans but they'll still complain.

I understand your point, and what I keep saying is that I don't think the trailer invokes curiosity in people who don't know, it invokes confusion and/or boredom.

Also I don't think it's lame because we already know this stuff, it's lame because it spends way too long on it, it's not cut well, and it doesn't make for good trailer material in either case. I can't use smaller words to explain this to you, and you've apparently already written off any other opinion here so there's no point to having this discussion anymore.

Oh and the one person I have shown it to thought it was boring except for the action part, didn't understand why they kept having the flashbacks or what was going on, and other than looking pretty did not inspire any fuck yeah let's play Halo 4 feelings. This is the market you're talking about. Assuming the mainstream 30-second commercials are cut from this, I think it will be a much better trailer in a succinct format.
