It seemed like a minor adjustment. To comply with the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling that legalized gay marriage in 2003, the state Registry of Vital Records and Statistics said it needed to revise its birth certificate forms for babies born to same-sex couples. The box for “father” would be relabeled “father or second parent,’’ reflecting the new law.

But to then-Governor Mitt Romney, who opposed child-rearing by gay couples, the proposal symbolized unacceptable changes in traditional family structures.

He rejected the Registry of Vital Records plan and insisted that his top legal staff individually review the circumstances of every birth to same-sex parents.
Only after winning approval from Romney’s lawyers could hospital officials and town clerks across the state be permitted to cross out by hand the word “father’’ on individual birth certificates, and then write in “second parent,’’ in ink.

Divisions between the governor’s office and state bureaucrats over the language on the forms and details about the extraordinary effort by the Republican governor to prevent routine recording of births to gay parents are contained in state records obtained by the Globe this month.
The next month, Romney delivered remarks before the Senate Judiciary Committee in Washington in which he decried the state Supreme Judicial Court’s ruling and its effect on child-rearing. He outlined his misgivings about the request from the Registry of Vital Records.

“The children of America have the right to have a father and a mother,’’ Romney said in his prepared remarks. “What should be the ideal for raising a child? Not a village, not ‘parent A’ and ‘parent B,’ but a mother and a father.’’

Romney also warned about the societal impact of gay parents raising children. “Scientific studies of children raised by same-sex couples are almost nonexistent,’’ he said. “It may affect the development of children and thereby future society as a whole.’’

Romney expressed similar beliefs during a speech in 2005 to socially conservative voters in South Carolina, as he was beginning to be viewed as a serious candidate for president.

“Some gays are actually having children born to them,’’ he declared. “It’s not right on paper. It’s not right in fact. Every child has a right to a mother and father.’’

Changes to Massachusetts birth certificates formally acknowledging children to same-sex marriages did not come into effect until after Governor Deval Patrick, a Democrat, assumed office.

Even though everyone's vote doesn't count as much depending on the state your in, everyone should fuckin do it anyway. I wish this election could show a landslide popular vote victory against this bullshit so republicans have no choice but to rethink their shit

I still don't understand why anyone would vote for this guy...

Seriously if he becomes president I will be shaking my head for the next 4 years.

It still boggles my mind that this fucker has a ANY shot at the Presidency. When the vast majority of every other nation prefers Obama to Romney you KNOW we dun goofed somewhere.

As someone outside of the US, it honestly bothers me that someone like him could end up as president considering some of his views and policies, and that he would be the leader of one of the biggest and most powerful nations on the planet.

He seems quite happy to drag society into the past.

Mitt Romney is a lying sack of shit. You can't trust a single fucking word that comes out of his mouth.

He claimed that he would be better for gay rights than Ted Kennedy.

And then he did that? We are not even talking about the flip-flop to become the GOP presidential candidate . . . he just fucking flat out lied back then and didn't even support gay rights when the Governor of liberal Massachusetts.

We already know he does not support gay rights. Fine, that's your policy. I'm just amazed about how much a fucking lying deceitful piece of shit he is. If you are voting for him because you believe he'll cut your taxes then prepare to get fucked.

Sexuality aside, it seems weird to me that a person who did not contribute DNA to a child would be listed on the birth certificate in the first place. But I'm not an expert, so I won't pretend to have a valid opinion on the matter.

Your impressions of this country are wrong then, unfortunately a good chunk of it already lives in the past and will happily vote him into power.

This is nothing new or relevant. We all know Willard hates gays, it won't sway the gay vote, and it'll only make crazy conservatives love him more.

Those darn gays, eroding the foundations of society by trying to create loving families.

Fuck this bigoted moron and the idiots he panders to.

I read this as "There is such a lack of studies on the effects of same-sex couples raising a child that I can make up whatever the fuck I want and nobody can call me out on it!"

Yeah, Mitt. Such a situation may affect the development of those children. Also, having you as president may affect the development of our country and thereby future society as a whole. There's no scientific study showing those results, either.

It really saddens me seeing all the Romney support signs every day I drive home. =/

They didn't bring up gay rights even once during the debates, did they?
wouldn't have mattered, mitt would've been all like "I love gay people, I love cars, I love teachers"

"When I was campaigning in Iowa I met a gay man named Harold Bellinger who told me about how he got fired from his job in a manufacturing plant and he asked me 'Governor Romney, can you help me?" and I told him 'Yes Harold, if I'm elected President, I will help you get a job'. See Gay Americans are just like Straight Americans or Female Americans. They all need jobs and under President Obama, Americans in all of those groups have lost too many jobs. I will help them get jobs as President!"

... 10 minutes later ....

"Government can't create jobs"

Pretty sure a big support network is the best thing for a child.

Fun fact - My friend's sister is gay and voting for Mitt Romney.

My girlfriend's sister's brother is gay and he is voting for Mitt Romney because Obama wants to help poor people. He's a biller for a medical office.

This guy is pure evil, Bush was pretty dumb but actually tried to do good, but I don't trust this rich cunt at all.

Would you happen to know the reason? I'm always curious about such self-loathing behavior.

I don't think it's self-loathing, most likely that other issues are more important to them than their own rights as a gay person, regardless, Mitt is crazy and no one should vote for him, and I hope America can overcome its homophobic tendencies

Let me guess the other guy is a moslem, right?
