There were just so many little things in there that just worked really well, Cap decapitating Truman, the newspaper cover (from the Daily Bugle no less), the hobo with the monster claw, the improv everywhere quip (those guys suck sometimes)....it's a dumb book with layers. I hope it keeps the same level of quality.

<3 this guy

It was a pretty awesome first issue, glad I jumped on it. Also helps that it's $2.99.

It's one of those things where I hope to God Bendis can make this work really really well... since the potential for total fuck up is there.

He does great stuff with Ultimate Spider-man, it's just a matter of somehow translating that talent over to All New X-Men.

That's the thing. He's done great work and crappy work. When it's good, it's pretty great, when it's crap... man I feel so blah/numb after reading it.

I just want the former, that's all.

Still, I have hope so just gotta wait for come out.

Yup, he sounds excited about this so I have a bit of hope.

I honestly think that Bendis can be a fantastic writer when he wants to be. He has too many great stories (or what I believe to be great, anyway) to ever believe he is bad. It is more a question of if he is "into it" or not. I think he really only falls short in dialogue and even then, I don't think it is THAT awful if you consider where is he coming from.

Bendis is not a bad writer, but he's lousy on team books and therefore I'm not too any optimistic about any of his NOW stuff.

The quality of a Bendis story, generally speaking, is inversely proportionate to the size of the cast he's writing. My expectations are pretty low for any team book with his name on it.

His deficiencies at pacing/plotting/continuity/distinct characterization were more forgivable earlier in his Avengers run, when he was a genuinely fresh voice with a new approach to the material and one could more easily overlook things like deus ex machina endings or the entirety of Disassembled/House of M being founded on a massive continuity error*, but he wore out his welcome for me sometime around Secret Invasion.

*His explanation for Wanda going insane hinged on the notion that she had no memory of her children or their quasi-deaths. While her memory was erased shortly after the story where the kids were written out, it was restored in a story published years before Disassembled.

Where is he coming from?

What I mean by that is what he is trying to convey when his characters are talking. When he has characters repeat themselves like

"Wow you an Avenger?"
"Yup"
"Like, THE Avengers?"
"Yup"
this is him attempting to show disbelief in the person meeting avenger xyz. He also uses this same tactic to show awkwardness and sometimes uses it in a way that is meant to be funny.

The delivery isn't always great and since he does this so much, it really gets tedious. I think that is his biggest issue.

Agreed, he seems to do great when it comes to street-level characters. His Daredevil run was fantastic, same with Ultimate Spider-Man.

"rhetorical question to no one in particular"
"Rephrase/repeating rhetorical question"
"generic exclamation!"
"snarky joke"
"What?"

Those are his team-writing book guidelines. I like to think he's got them on a board and he uses darts to figure out what to say next.

The best team books have clear, defined characterization for each member, treating them as individuals. You can read lines of dialog and know which character is saying what because of how it's phrased, the speaking cadence, and what sentence actually is. Jason Aaron gets this, Rick Remender gets this, Claremont most definitely got it. Claremont can have over a dozen characters on a single page, and they all have defined personality. Beast doesn't sound like Wolverine who doesn't sound like Kitty who doesn't sound like the other teen Wolverine protegee Jubilee. They are all unique people with their own personalities, and they bring something unique to the book.

Bendis team books don't do this shit. You can scramble half of Hawkeye/Spidey/Luke Cage/Wonder Man/etc dialog and it wouldn't be too jarring or unbelievable. It's all generic jokes and shouting, repeating what the other person said in a failed attempt to be subversive and clever. It's so self-aware and cookie cutter and fuckin' annoying. There aren't any characters, they're ciphers for Bendis dialog, this half-ass David Mamet, Glengarry Glen Ross shist. You get some of the best artists in the business drawing your books like Romita Jr and Deodato Jr and Chris freakin' Bachalo and you waste them to talking heads and stretching out stories to 6-issues of painful decompression.

I can't find the image, but someone actually photoshopped this for one of the Fear Itself talking-head tie-in issues last year.

Without a copy of the actual issue, you'd never have a clue which was the original.

looking forward to reading the new Manhattan Projects tonight. finishing FF made me realize how insane MP is going to get in a few years.

I tried to read it last night but had totally forgotten everything that had happened previously. Gonna read the entire thing again now. Not that that's a bad thing :)

I'm just glad they aren't the new writers of Deadpool aren't using those dumb narration boxes Way introduced.

The issue itself wasn't bad. T. Moore's artwork is, as always, great.

Deadpool was aight, better than Iron Man simply because it had MUUUUUUCH better artwork. Like, I can't stretch my arms wide enough to express the gulf in artistry displayed by Tony Moore compared to Greg Land.

X-factor 246 might be better than WATXM !7.

Also
i thought jason aaron was heartless, but peter david just bought it to a whole new level. WHAT THE FUCKK

:( :( :( :(

PIP

such an underrated book

Its weird how much character movement he had to do with the roster lately. Also wtf is Darwin

Finally caught up with IDW's Ghostbusters run as well. Massive props to the team on this, its so filled with awesome callbacks (spare black GB2 jumpsuit useage made me squeal out loud). Highly recommended.

Seconded. It's been such a fun series.

I wasn't going to pick up Iron Man #1 because of the Greg Land art, but Gillen made me do it. I enjoyed it, despite Land's amazing talent to draw the same woman over and over again. I liked the new colour scheme of the outfit, I liked what I hoped was going to be a theme in the book
Tony questioning the fundamentals of things, which I hope leads into some Hickman like weirdness
, and I liked the colours on the book overall. My only complaint outside of Land was the villain not really exciting me that much, but overall, I did not wail and bemoan spending the better part of five dollars on it.

Comic related, so I thought I should post it here.
GF gave me some early birthday presents.

#121 & #122

r5OeIl.jpg

Avengers' heads baking pan, comic book cookie cutters, Avengers' heads cookie cutters, and Spidey Spatula.

I was so surprised and giddy. She got me into Spider-Man by buying my first TASM Vol. 1 Essentials, then the TASM Omnibus Vol. 1, and now these. She's keeping it alive.

Marry her.

Is that a cookie pan shaped like the heads of the Avengers? Dude, you can have Avenger cookies/brownies!

Yessir it is. I'll edit my post to clarify. Avengers' heads baking pan, Comic book cookie cutters, and Avengers' heads cookie cutters. Can't wait to use them, hahah. Omnom

You have to marry this girl, after she makes you Avenger head brownies.

Would you return a book if the binding was a little weird in the front? Absolute Final Crisis

GEDC0009-1.jpg

Notice on the right side of the binding it's kind of raised up a bit from the spine....it reads fine though. Return or keep? Would have to mail back if returned Xo.

Thought I'd come in here to say hello and return to the Comic Book Collecting / Reading community. It's been a long time since I purchased a physical Comic Book... almost 7 years. I picked up Shadowman #1 yesterday, I used to love the comic back in the 90's might pick up some other Valiant Comics in the near future... gonna dust off my collections I have at my parents. I also bought Roybn Hood # 1 & # 2... Female Archer dressed in green... couldn't resist.

I had an Uncanny X-Men run from 266 to 466... I should try to sell it, I've lost near all intrest in the X-men.

Black Kiss 2 just keeps giving.

I would love to be a fly on the wall of Chaykin's studio to bear witness to his process. This man just shames a wide swath of artists working in the industry today, and he's doing it on a book that's magnificently off the rails. :D

Bendis can definitely be a good writer. And I think he can write the original five and present Cyclops good, I'm not worried about then. My only concern is his handling of Wolverine which has been a joke character in the Avengers for the last 5, 6 years. And Bendis said this book will be about Cyclops, Logan and Jean.

Unfortunately he just doesn't understand, maybe don't want to understand the character.

I may cut Manhattan Projects. :(

The combination of $3.50 cover price, shitty paperstock, and Nick Pitarra's art is pushing me away.

I know folks love to crap on IDW's pricing; but IDW books generally feel like a quality product.

The problem for me is that his good/great comics are quickly being overshadowed by the sheer number of his terrible comics.

I am looking forward to see how his X-Men turns out though. Alias alone gives him a chance everytime with me.

Thinning the herd again, read my last issue of Batman and Robin with #13. Decent book, but i'm buying too many and i don't find Batman and Robin to really stand out despite liking Gleason's artwork and being a general fan of Damien. Will pick up the trade if it gets great reviews.

Also....need more Absolute Final Crisis funky binding picture feedback to make my decision!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

Also also, i was silly and bought 2 issues of Uncanny Avengers #1 since dcbs had them for 99 cents and i thought having another issue for collector's purposes would be neat but now i don't care so first one to quote this post gets the digital code.

Yeah, his last 2 or maybe even 3 years of avengers stuff have been really underwhelming...he was smart to quit the books before it became even worse.

To me it seems like Bendis was just making up stuff as the series continued after the first years. He threw a lot of stuff in the air to see what would stick, then abandoned a lot of plot points. He didn't have a long term plan anymore, and end goal. That's one of the reasons I'm excited about Hickman.

Wow supposedly big, big Iron Man 3 spoiler courtesy of a brazilian site and Bleeding Cool.

Read at your own risk!!!

Seems like Rescue is in the movie in some way! Pepper will get an armor!

DC's trade department is assy as hell, you'll probably just get a worse one back. If that reads fine just keep it.

Yeah, Secret Invasion felt like the "end" of his run, then Siege happened (which was actually pretty good) and then that felt like the end. Then it just kept going. The beginning of The Heroic Age would've been the perfect time for him to exit. After "The Avengers" came back and "New Avengers" relaunched, I just kind of lost interest.

I like Bendis just fine, but I think, much like Geoff Johns, he enjoyed "sticking the landing" so much that he tried to stretch it out as far as it'd go, which can get tiresome.
