Windows 8 is to receive Direct X 11.1 exclusively, with no plans to make it available for older versions of Microsoft’s OS. In response to the company’s position, a Microsoft employee has discussed the move on its official forum.

Neowin reports that Microsoft employee Daniel Moth took to the Microsoft Answers forum to discuss the move, where he said, “DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7. DirectX 11 was made available for Vista …. but at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7.”

The update will allow stereoscopic 3D to be viewed with compatible glasses, among other features. here’s a full update list:

Shader tracing and compiler enhancements
Direct3D device sharing
Check support of new Direct3D 11.1 features and formats
Use HLSL minimum precision
Specify user clip planes in HLSL on feature level 9 and higher
Create larger constant buffers than a shader can access
Use logical operations in a render target
Force the sample count to create a rasterizer state
Process video resources with shaders
Extended support for shared Texture2D resources
Change subresources with new copy options
Discard resources and resource views
Support a larger number of UAVs
Bind a subrange of a constant buffer to a shader
Retrieve the subrange of a constant buffer that is bound to a shader
Clear all or part of a resource view
Map SRVs of dynamic buffers with NO_OVERWRITE
Use UAVs at every pipeline stage
Extended support for WARP devices
Use Direct3D in Session 0 processes

Pretty sure they said this about 11 for Vista initially too.

Let's see you keep those guns up, Microsoft. I'm going to stick happily on 7 and vista and not give a fuck.

Because that worked really fucking well for DX10 Vista.

I love how a xx.1 version of something requires a new OS to run...

Shouldn't they call it DirectX12 if that's the case? Anti consumerism at it's highest.

I'm fine with that. I have Win8 and love it. I think this has more to do with a large scheme they are building with next gen. NextBox, Win8 PC, Win8 Tablet's will all integrate together kind of like the Wii U.

Haha. Fuck you Microsoft.

We might take a hit initially moving onto Open GL on linux... but hey, if you incentivize the market to move off your platform... you can only really blame yourself for it!

Screw you MS. I am a huge proponent of Win 7 but as someone who's been testing 8 since you sent it to me months ago, I am not a fan of the new interface still. Why force me into something that would be trivial for you to give support it all the way back go Vista?

Use UAVs at every pipeline stage
This is bullshit, I already do this in Battlefield 3 all the time.

Edit: Don't all these sound like plot devices in Metal Gear Solid games? "Raiden, use HLSL minimum precision to disrupt the nanomachines regenerating her flesh!"

oh ffs, after god knows how many iterations that worked fine on the same hardware they bring out DX10 that needs a new card and Vista. Then DX11 that needs a newer card. Now you think I'm going to fall for it again? Fuck you, I'll happily go without 11.1 if it means I don't have to buy shit just to run it.

Why do these morons keep pulling the same stupid move? They'll see so little support for it that they may as well have skipped it entirely. Absolutely pointless.

I still work as an IT contractor for companies that are still on XP. Many of them plan to migrate very soon.

Windows 8 is not going to be choice of OS.

It seems like MS is marketing Windows 8 to the Apple crowd, they love crap like this. So it might work.
