Video of the U.S. Military's Walking 4-Legged Tank/Mule

Jesus... this is amazing

Honda Asimo owned? I know this has four legs and all, but there seems to be some kind of elastic dynamics going on in this thing, which is sorely lacking in Asimo. The way it stays in balance when kicked is simply amazing.

It's coming to get YOU!

Any story on what roles it would fufil (i.e. resupply, suicide dog, bomb sniffer)?

i kept rewinding the clip where it recovered from the first kick. i dont know enough about the technology, but the way it outstretched its leg to stabilize itself as its other legs moved into their positions was really amazing.

Its also really cool to have this kind of walking robot tech on our shores.

Haven't watched the video yet, but I'm going to pre-emptively say MGS4 for the win.
Pretty much. Legs on this thing look and move eerily like legs on Gekkos, and it's using the non-rigid muscle-like movement system much like the idea behind Gekkos. Kojima is on the ball when it comes to current trends, as usual.

Did you see it recover from the second, even strongest kick, when it kinda jumps aside, crossing it's legs while keeping balance. It's unbelievable to see something like this actually being made.

I don't know about the rest of you but I was sort of hoping for something more along the lines of this:

:( When will we get big tanks that walk so we can kill lots of our enemies?!?!?
/sarcasm

i didn't expect the world's first military mech to look so much like a pantomime horse. it is kind of creepy...and kind of endearing. i felt bad for it when that dude kicked it :/

Holy shit.....

Take 5 of these, attach remote controls, camera, armor, a heavy machine gun..Hello urban warfare Mech.

now imagine someone built a fleshlight attachment for it.

wtf sick.

Whats the point? why not just have wheels?

Even more signs of the Evil Robot Overloards/Apocalypse:

A nimble, four-legged robot is so surefooted it can recover its balance even ... all » after being given a hefty kick. The machine, which moves like a cross between a goat and a pantomime horse, is being developed as a robotic pack mule for the US military.

BigDog is described by its developers Boston Dynamics as “the most advanced quadruped robot on Earth”.

Raibert says the latest version of BigDog can handle slopes of 35° – a steeper gradient than one in two. The hydraulics are driven by a two-stroke single-cylinder petrol engine, and it can carry over 40 kg, about 30% of its bodyweight. The robot can follow a simple path on its own, or can be remotely controlled.

The legs on the next version of BigDog, V3, will each have an additional powered joint and will be able to take on even steeper slopes and rougher terrain at higher speed, its makers say.

.

Thats pretty amazing :O

It reacts amazingly to a kick/shunt... someone mentioned AT-ATs earlier though. Which brings up a good point. They need to make it cable proof too!

I have the feeling that someday I'll be telling my grandchildren, "At first it was just a plank with four legs back then. No knew what horrible things it would've turned into. We all thought it was kinda cool."

:lol

I felt sad for the thing, I imagined it with a heavy full-auto rifle mounted on it and I burst out laughing

I fear I'm an evil person

Leave the buzz, put some scary lookin armor on it, some weapons, and it would freak the hell out of people. Hears buzzing noise in the distance "My god! They are coming! Run for your lives!". Psychological warfare FTW.

What's really scary is that once they are able to mass produce things like that, it'll probably be a ton more cost effective to use them in military operations. They don't have to be trained, housed, fed, hospitalized, etc........

...and then SKYNET....

Wheels cannot do half of what this thing does. Did you watch the movie? It walks up VERY steep inclines, even covered with loose rocks. It walks through thick mud and snow. It can climb stairs. It can recover balance when it's tipped. Let's see wheels do that.

I envision the legs on the real production versions to be VERU large and VERY thick. This thing looks very spindly. When they finally put this tech onto a gun the legs will have to be stronger.

And each one should have a bomb inside it so if they're tipped over in enemey territory, they can be destroyed so they don't steal our tech!

But think of how many jobs that'll open up for us C&C players? THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES!! There could be a GAF Robot Division.

That is quite amazing. Interesting how it's designed after two people carrying something (knees facing inward), rather than a horse or other quadruped, for added stability. Very impressive robotics, that.

I think the primary military application for these things is to scare opposing soldiers away by making them think there is a swarm of killer bees coming for them.

Um.. did YOU watch the video? Where the heck did you see a VERY steep incline?? Even in the description posted they say it can walk up 35 degrees.. thats not so great. The mud and snow in the video were nothing.. i could ride through that on a pedal bike.

As for recovering balance.. what would be hard about that? I dont get it.
