Michael David Dunn will be brought from Brevard County to Jacksonville after entering a not-guilty plea to charges of murder and attempted murder in the Friday shooting death of a 17-year-old student at a Jacksonville gas station.

Dunn, 45, of Satellite Beach, waived extradition and should be en route back to Jacksonville before Thursday to face charges in the death of Jordan Russell Davis, according to Lt. Tod Goodyear, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

A gun collector in Jacksonville for his son’s wedding, Dunn told police he felt “threatened” after an argument with the Wolfson High student over loud music coming from a sports-utility vehicle parked next to him at the Gate station at 8251 Southside Blvd. Davis was in the back seat when “there were words exchanged,” followed by gunfire at 7:40 p.m., said Jacksonville homicide Lt. Rob Schoonover.

“Our suspect produced a weapon and started firing into the vehicle. Our victim was shot a couple of times,” Schoonover said. “ … They were listening to the music. It was loud; they [other teens] admitted that. But I mean that is not a reason for someone to open fire on them.”

Everything about this story was correct in my head before I even opened the link to confirm.

If only those teens had guns this wouldn't have happened.

That's it folks, close it up!

Edit: While it doesn't look like an inherently racist shooting, I do think that it's possible the guy had an easier time killing a black guy than he would have with a white guy.
Hard to prove, obviously.

This will be classified as a racist shooting =/

Any reason to give the killer the benefit of the doubt otherwise?

I wonder exactly what attribute of the victim it was that caused him to feel "threatened."

Because the victim was black? I don't understand why this would be classed as such.

Did Dunn kill Davis because he was black? I doubt it. Did the fact that the teenagers in the car were black males play on Dunn's insecurities and contribute to his willingness to open fire at any perceived "threat"? I can't say for certain, not knowing the guy, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case.

(sees images before reading the op)

(was the black teen the gun collector and the white male was the victim? Doubtful but...)

(nope)

god fucking damnit florida. why didn't he just drive away or... you know not shoot him? ugh, I hope that bastard gets charged for second degree murder.

He should be.

Having no desire to look up Florida's law, I'll comment based upon my knowledge of Alabama law. In Alabama, at least, prosecutors could charge him with capital murder based upon the various aggravators alleged in the story, specifically, (1) firing from within a vehicle and (2) firing into an occupied vehicle.

Unfortunately, I'd be surprised if they charged him with a capital crime, even assuming some sort of equivalency between Alabama and Florida law, but I would be all for it if they did should the facts as presented in the news story hold up over time.

We'll if racists motives are found during trial then why wouldn't it be. Him saying it's "The music" is probably a lesser punishment.

What even made this man feel he had a right to "confront them" and him shooting from inside of his care into there care while they were still inside is threatening to him how? Did the melody and the lyrics of what present mortal danger to himself. Did the words of the teen seem threatening to him? Has he even considered how threatening his words may have came of to the teen if that was going to be his reaction?

I wonder what words were exchanged? Unjustified killing nonetheless, but the loud music was just a precursor to the altercation. Sad news for sure.

Depressingly predictable for the most part. I have to say though, firing from inside your car into another car is so profoundly cowardly that I was somewhat surprised.
