Awesome.

My dad is going to be so ecstatic when I show him this. He watched the first film like a half a dozen times, always asking at the end when the next one will come out. He's such a huge Kirk and Spock fan.

He "returned". Gary Mitchell hasn't happened in JJ Trek so it can't be him IMO.

It could still be Khan. If Khan was in cryostasis and was awoken, he was gone for a while so he can actually "return". They are really ambiguous with what they show. He's shown leaping with some kind of weapon in his arm. If he was Gary Mitchell, he wouldn't need weapons. Also, Kirk wouldn't be able to get into a fist fight with Mitchell.

I feel it's more likely to be Khan or another of his Supermen now than Mitchell.

Yea I bet because its a divergent timeline they wake up one of the other of khans people who turns out to be just as deadly or worse than khan was.

Mitchell was done in the comics, so he could technically return.

But I doubt that as it would surely be confusing for most of the audience that these new films are aimed at that don't know the old or new alternate universe stories.

He didn't have any noticble powers that I saw besides jumping around what looked like quite a way and beating people up, so genetically enchanted human seems more likely than super powers.

A bit too Metroid Prime: Echoes for my tastes but I love love the Enterprise surfacing/submerging. Absolutely worth the whole thing for those moments.

That's what I was suspecting for a long time and this teaser basically confirms it IMO. Some superhuman strength was shown but nothing magical.

Ya the people they are aiming this movie at aren't going to read some comic. That is clearly just misdirection for superfans.

Also, I really don't think they'd waste 20 minutes at the opening of the movie setting up a Gary Mitchell situation, fast forward in time, then have him return angry. Then again, that's basically what they did with Nero :s

I think it still looks like a Khan-era Superman. The movie will likely open with the Botany Bay being opened by that blonde girl featured in the teaser.

If it's Khan then they really are creatively bankrupt.

It's probably not "Khan" as we know him, but another of his Supermen aboard the Botany Bay. Maybe in this universe, he is the only survivor. Either that or they revive him first and he kills the rest so he can be without equal.

Also, the synopsis says "the only family he has left, his crew". That basically also confirms that Kirk's mother and/or other family members, maybe even Pike, will die when Starfleet HQ is attacked.

Pretty good trailer. At this point, nothing's really making me think it'll top 2009, but let's wait until we get a look at those 9 minutes.

Oh, and the blonde looks woefully out of place. The way the camera subtly zooms in on her during her first shot...*cringe*.

Hype confirmed.

Not sold on Benedict Cumberbatch, hopefully he does a really menacing role though. Promising in the trailer at least.

Cumberbatch looks great.

It's a shame the writers will surely a deliver another utterly dumb script.

I'm sold and Cumberbatch looks great like Dan said.

Can't wait to see the longer trailer.

Mitchell was an Academy friend of James T. Kirk, stemming back to the time then-lieutenant Kirk was serving as an instructor and Mitchell was a first-year cadet. That year, Mitchell aimed a "little blonde lab technician" towards Kirk – as a means to distract his rigid instructor – and, in turn, Kirk almost married her.

Oh shit :(

But he was fighting with arm lasers and the only abilities he demonstrated was a super leap, both things that seem more Botany Bay than Mitchell.

Actually the blonde in the movie (assuming it is Mitchell) would be more likely this woman who actually has a name:

Elizabeth Dehner, PhD, MD

When Mitchell fled captivity, he took Dehner with him into the hills of Delta Vega. Captain Kirk followed, determined to put an end to the threat posed by Gary Mitchell. Sensing Kirk's pursuit, Mitchell sent Dehner to intercept him; he hoped she would come to his opinion that mortals were highly insignificant. However, she retained enough of her Humanity to be appalled by Mitchell's actions and sacrificed her life to weaken Mitchell, an act that allowed Kirk to kill him.

Um the extra clip for the JP trailer is basically the ending of the Wrath of Khan.

This has to be Khan.

The question now is, will he be Khan or one of Khan's other Supermen?

If so, ST2016 better not be a "The Search for Spock" remake.
