How many people have to die before we make serious gun law changes? Every time something like this happens people get angry and mad and politicians say its a tragedy that shouldn't happen again but seemingly nothing is ever done.

It's possible the gunman was a rabid anti-gun opponent who saw the pro-gun reaction to all the recent shootings and said to himself "Well if no one's against guns after this, I'll show them! I'll kill a bunch of children!"

That's a disgusting theory. Reminds me of when nutso gun freaks accused Obama of staging the theater shooting to ban guns. Fuck that nonsense.

Because the sacro-saint nature of slaughtering children negates discussion of how the single-most powerful pro-gun lobby in the US is reating?

I apologize, forgive my inappropriate comment. I don't mean to offend but this happens too often. I am upset. I am not trying to open a debate here about gun control, nor do I want to participate in one.

The comment is in this thread and I respect your opinion but you could have just glossed over it or pm'd a mod. Be well, keep an eye out for others.

No, because people read this thread to follow the situation and get updates. Not to see people arguing gun control.

Respect to those teachers who ran towards the gunfire to save kids. Those are heroes in my mind. We had a gun at a school incident here a few months ago, nobody hurt or anything, killed walked up to the front of the class and held it out with a knife, matches and bottle of gasoline. Wanted to be heard, and just talked to the students, fired one round in the air when someone tried to run out the door. He eventually set it down and the teacher tackled him (this was the teachers second day on the job) . Some of these teachers are great great people.

What the fuck. Was relieved earlier to hear only 1 or 2 people died then just switched on CNN to find out over 20 are dead. My g-d, what the hell. Terrible. Heartless fucking bastard man.

I'm hesitant to post this - but there is a horrible rumor floating around that the shooter shot

the principal,
the teacher,
the school psychologist
and nearly every student in the classroom.

Jesus. I saw this on the news during lunch and heard there were 2 adult fatalities and 1 child. Now they're saying 20-something total and a lot of kids?

What a nightmare. My heart goes out to the community there.

Reading comprehension.

I was just pointing out that the argument "you can't stop people from owning guns so trying to control guns is moot" is extremely faulty and makes little logical sense.

as is "we better legalize rape since it clearly does nothing to stop rapists."

There is a difference between a CRIME (rape) and a right (owning a firearm).

I like that you brought rape into it though. Really brought a lot to the discussion.

CNN sucks. It went from 2 adults to ~27 including kids. Why can't they WAIT until they have all the facts first.

I think this will end up being the last straw and force Obama to say something on gun reform. I'm personally in favor of pistol ownership but the rest needs to be banned from being manufactured for civilian use, only for soldiers imo. What kind of weapon this person used and how they got it will influence how the national debate will be framed.

Can't imagine what it's like for parents who are wondering if their kid is okay and can't go into the school to find out.

For reference,

Columbine- 13 killed
VA Tech- 32 killed
Batman- 12 killed

many more injured in each massacre. considering that the victims are largely elementary school children then this may be the worst shooting in recent history. What the fuck. : (

Edit: Norway- 69 killed

My wife is an elementary school teacher, and my son will be in elementary school in a few years. This is a damn sad, sorry thing to happen, and I hope that everyone finds peace as soon as they're able.

This. Incredible respect and sadness for any teachers that were killed trying to protect the kids. Terrible, terrible news.

I'd say that I'm shocked, but I've become so numb to these sorts of things. I can't even begin to imagine what type of selfish, evil person would even comprehend doing something like this, but I really do hope that there is a special place in hell for him.

Breivik - 67 killed by gunfire

How many dead children is it going to take before America changes their fucking ridiculous gun laws?

So unnecessary :(

I'm a Canadian so I could never really relate to the right to bear arm mentality but if this does not trigger any kind of debate Americans will forever be alien to me.

I feel ill right now just thinking about what the parents of those affected are going through

:( Holy shit. Just got the update from the AP. 27 dead, 18 children.

Just saw this pop up on MSNBC. They had only been reporting the shooters death and reports of hospitalization. Was hoping for a better outcome. TO see it jump from "at least 3 hospitalized" to 24+ dead is heartbreaking.

Another day, another senseless shooting in the United States.
This kind of thing is becoming way, way too frequent.

At least 18 kids dead? Are you kidding me? This is horrific...

Breivik - 67 killed by gunfire

Yeah, but he was referring to our country's history. That was tragic as well, of course.

...ie. however many China kills on a regular basis, but no GAF posts about that!

Must not be a lot of Chinese people on GAF, or nobody's reading a news source that informs them about random Chinese killings. I certainly don't, except for the very notably bad ones. I'm not sure why that surprises you, given that this is a largely western forum.
