It's funny how this thread functions as a case study for how the media works in aggregate. Jumping to conclusion for attention. Being wrong.

The main difference is that our audience is very limited and nobody gives a shit what I or you say. These people have an international audience right now and have the power to screw someone's life up completely if they identify the wrong person.

I never saw his picture on the news. I saw someone here post that. It's easy to blame the media, but lots of people were rushing to Facebook once the name was released. I think the best thing to do is be patient and wait for information to be checked and double checked.

Holy shit, is it even confirmed that the picture is him?!?! It's got over 5,500 shares, all calling him horrible horrible things.

It's not him guys. Stand down

I hope he sues the media.

Where are u getting the comments, though? They arent showing up on his profile

If I was him I'd sue the media stations using the pic for as much as possible.

Fucking disgusting that they'd do that with no confirmation. Smh.

Just woke up and saw this as the main headline for the news. This is horrifying and terrible.

Also what the hell is going on with the media. Reporting someone as a shooter without verifying it and sharing his picture? Seriously? That's a massive screw-up on their part and he should sue them all for slander if he's not involved at all.

But double checking is the job of media...

Remember the Atlanta Olympics? An innocent man's life was ruined because CNN labeled him as a suspect. He never recovered. Please, if you are going to criticize the press for rushing to report, don't post people's names as suspects at a time like this.

News orgs went a bit beyond just "labeling him" as a suspect, they put out shoddy reports based on "insider tips" about how the FBI was closing in and how guilty and what a dumb fat loser he was (seriously). He eventually sued for damages, but he died a while back.

Fucking media, absolutely disgusting how they are handling this.

I bet that facebook guy has every lawyer in the country calling him now because because someone seriously fucked up.

I'm going to be pissed as hell if he doesn't make himself millions out of this.

I'm for one not calling for a ban on guns.

Better control would be appreciated.

True, people kill people regardless of the tools.

Wouldn't it be better if they had less effective tools?

Gun control isn't the issue. Crazy people are. The deadliest school massacre in US history was actually caused by explosions, not guns.

Crazy people will kill regardless if guns are outlawed or not.

You'd think that after ABC News identified the wrong guy in the Aurora shooting, others wouldn't make the same stupid mistake. I actually hope the other Ryan Lanza sues whichever news organizations ran his photo. Maybe then they'd learn to fact check, ffs.

I've been watching CBS and they showed multiple pictures of this kid multiple times.
