Lightning Returns trailer

So... I guess we can equate Lightning Returns as The Dark Knight Rises, right?

I mean XIII is basically Batman Begins as it's Lightning's origin story on what she becomes. A "badass" according to Toriyama.

XIII-2 is The Dark Knight where Lightning is basically Batman trying to save everything and eventually
gets owned and disappears.

LR is The Dark Knight Rises where Lightning comes and reclaims her Batmanhood.

Sound about right?
 
Wow, this looks like a mess, technically.

But if I will be able to ignore that, at least the gameplay looks kinda fun. I guess we now know what Tri-Ace have been up to lately.

The kind of sepia, brown, barren look really reminds me of this one obscure Russian game called Pathologic

If LR has half the atmosphere of that, it could be a great game.
 
As someone who didn't really get into the first XIII, thought XIII-2 looked dumb, and laughed at what he read about the overall story... This actually looks pretty neat.

Trailer looked cool in some parts, disappointing in others.
As i was expecting, the dress looked pretty nice animated. What I wasn't expecting was the city looking like something upressed from a PS2 or something (exaggeration here but it did look flat/very lacking in details).

Still excited about the game and Lightning looks pretty cool but I do hope they'll improve upon what was shown.

Creating a brand new RPG universe from scratch takes a lot of time and resources. You need to write the lore and mythos of the world. Choose the overall look of the world, environment, characters, monsters, etc. Designing everything will take a while and lot of people and SE JP doesn't have many teams available now.

Huge chunk of their guys are salvaging FFXIV. Another chunk is trying to finish Versus. The Osaka people are working on KH and so on. Some are also working on pre production for FFXV and that Agni Philosophy engine.

So basically the few people that are left have to use the assets they have and make a game with it. They will recycle the enemies from XIII/XIII-2 and use a modified version of that battle system for a quick cash in.

So it's gonna be XIII-2 > LR > XIII? I'm ok with that.
 
By the looks of it and the fact that we were told that you move real time in battles, I think the battle system is going to be an evolution of the one in Crisis Core combined with elements of XIII.

Crisis Core had fast real time movement and evasion and you assigned various abilities.

talking about the combat, obviously the art and world is different. don't be so defensive.
 
Trailer looks rough. They need to deal with that framerate, and that town looks like shit.

I kinda like the outfit.

I'm going to buy this, but the game could do with a name change. "Lightning Returns" is really, really bad. Why wouldn't they just call it Final Fantasy XIII-3?
 
Took me a bit to realize that the blue meter above the HP bar was the ATB. Those paradigms are interesting. They seem to contain a mix of abilities rather than focusing on specific kinds as in XIII/XIII-2. I'd think "Cerberus" would be purely physical, but there's a Blizzaga smack dab right in the middle of the set...

Looks like there's a combo system, too. You can see Lightning off a string of light/heavy attacks on a launched Behemoth, knocking it down to the ground at the end.

Doesn't looks as if it answers my question about whether Lightning will have full movements during battles or not. I certainly hope so, though I won't be too nonplussed if she doesn't.

No stagger bar. Or maybe it's been moved elsewhere. Those blank icons under enemy HP bars are rather suspicious. The more that I look, the more that I think they *are* the new stagger bar. They vibrate or otherwise change every time an enemy is hit. At one point, they're filled in with debuffs. Wonder what that's about?

Blinded by Light remix is sexy as hell. Pretty much confirms that the soundtrack will be fantastic, which I'm excited about. All in all, I like the trailer quite a bit. Hope it has a short localization time like XIII-2. Eager to see what other details about the battle system show up in the next few months.
 
Music, art and design are great IMO...

But the framerate makes it look sooooooo bad. Really hoping this is just the video.... O_O
 
I'm still interested in learning more about the progression system (how to you improve abilities/stats/whatnot). See if that interests me at all.

That was not a good trailer.
 
Looks like the same combat system, except with minor changes. Which would be all right with me -- except for the fact that you can only use Lightning...

THE POLE AND SUNGLASSES. lol
 
Lightning with shades aside...

The battle system is not so bad. They're offering you movement while still retaining the paradigms. Having the buttons assigned for 4 controls will make it snappy.
Sucks that there is only one playable character though.

In terms of art, I'm pretty disappointed. We know the story is going to be shit, but at least make the world beautiful, and worth exploring.
 
I'm not really sure what the point of the trailer is. If it really is early stuff, that will be considerably improved, then why show it? People did criticize the predecessors quite a lot, it would be wiser to wait until you can made a trailer that absolutely wows everyone and convices your critics. Unless this will not be improved and is an example of how the finished game will look like... but even then there was no need to show a trailer now, I mean they surely must see that this looks very rough?

Mwu ha ha - of course they are.

Generally:

Square really did fuck themselves with the entire XIII project. I don't know which tenured producer pitched the snake oil internally... but if anyone recalls, like six years ago they made grandiose statements about how the world of XIII was this whole universe people would get lost in, etc. A franchise within a franchise.

The thing is, back in the day Square often began prototyping a new FF game while the current game was still in development. Due to how large the projects were. I distinctly remember an article in the late 90s about FF IX being in planning stages complete with concept art, while FFXIII was still deep in development.

I wonder if this time, they actually got caught up in their own bullshit and didn't even bother devising a backup plan or future project while they were killing themselves trying to turn XIII into something? Did FF15 even really exist, at least as an idea or proposal, when Wada set the new terms? Do they have a single clue what to do next?

XIII-2 was fun and I stand by that. It had some stupid aspects, but was still a good time.

I have no idea what the fuck they're doing here; I thought the goal of making more FFXIIIs was to reuse many many assets, not create all new shit-looking environments.

My god the framerate.....

Look SE I didn't want this game, and while I will likely buy it even with my desrie to you to move on from XIII, this is really pushing my loyalty to the god damn breaking point.
