Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

as someone who actually likes return of the king, i am shocked and offended on a personal level by the comparison and am about to faint from a foul case of the vapours while my dual monocles pop off at supersonic speeds

Listening to the podcast. Looks like Tricky and Vinny will be my personas this year. That Binary Domain spoiler was it.

Patrick: "Vinny, I'm looking at you, not the other guys. You know...we've been there."
Vinny: "Yeah."

Return of the King got those Oscars because of ending this big ambitious trilogy and because Academy voters were old enough to read those books, not so much that it was the best movie that year. That's the comparison he was making. Personally, the year I checked out of caring for Oscars.

i know what he meant, i'm talking about drawing any comparison between the two. harrumph. *lifts nose into air, rides away on giant olde tyme bicycle*

Just watched it. Made my XMas day. I'm still cracking
wise
-up over here. I played it on the apple TV for the family to watch......they will never understand.

PS: My mom thinks Brad beard looks good on him.

So, what's your mom doing later?

I stopped playing BD where I needed to create a path with the help of a crane...
Granted Alan Wake did the same and I love that game so much, I just could not continue after that and gaf's praise.

So, what's your mom doing later?

Well, you do not have that beard anymore, so...

The return of the king thing doesnt even make any sense. Mass effect 2 got a shittonne of GotY awards. He gave it GotY in 2010!

For fuck's sake, no I didn't. Not even close, I think it was #4 for me at most. Some of you will pull any "fact" out of thin air to support your argument.

I think he means you supported it for Overall GOTY in 2010. I don't know if that's true or not, but there it is.

edit: explained below

Im sorry yeah, youre right. It was rdr. Must have confused it with the overall giantbomb GotY.

I still think its weird to act like the series was being snubbed prior to this game.

Not too sure if I dig the format. Always though GB was more about the 'fratboyish' humor.

And ME3 winning for Brad... not disappointed in the choice, but am disappointed that it was the obvious choice for brad :P

What does fratboyish humor even mean? How does Giant Bomb fit into the that?

1. Food
2. Booze
3. Jeff's hella crazy life

I don't know, I think it's just not standard introvert behaviour so some people label it as fratboy. They are charmingly garrulous after all.

I'm gonna spend the entire day tomorrow finishing 999. Not being able to watch Patrick's spoilercast is already eating me alive and I don't want to miss game of the year discussions. I won't make it with TWD though but eh, I don't care about it that much.

Dude, it's almost certainly not going to be in there. The only category it was really up for was 2011 game of 2012 and it was thrown out immediately for being a 2010 game.

Legit reasons re: the spoilercast though

I jive with brad's reasoning but I didn't have that experience. Practically nobody else did (at least on GAF)

Yeah, but the fact that they dismiss it simply because it doesn't have dual analogue is laughable. Dual analogue wouldn't work for that game at all. Dual analogue barely works for any games.
If dual analog wont work, why is there an abxy control scheme

Some kid Icarus fans need to stop spouting this crap about dual analog not working.

I wish I could like ME3 as much as Brad does.

Which would suggest they won't be mocking them.

Is this not taking into account all they mocking they all did over Twitter already? If anything it likely won't happen due to not fitting into their theme, not because they're afraid of hurting a grown man's feelings.

For serious though I played something close to 60 hours of Kid Icarus and my hand fucking hurt for about a month. Ground controls can be a mess, honestly. It's passable and better than I think dual-stick would have gone (not that the 3DS has dual stick) but it still causes me physical pain.

But the amount of content and quality of Kid Icarus... my god. That's GOTY calibur if nothing else.
I mean it's got everything after chapter 10
in it, and then fusion weapons, multiplayer, that god damn amazing soundtrack, excellent dubbing work, a quality script, 8-bit jokes... if it weren't for the control issues it would have been pretty much perfect.

I...what?

I hate dual analogue controls, especially at this point and how it looks to be the norm for next gen as well. It always feels clunky, antiquated, and imprecise. Wiimote and nunchuk are even superior to dual analogue controls, at least in my opinion. My opinion could be skewed because I was a Wii only owner this gen until I got a gaming PC last year, so I haven't regularly played games with dual analogue controls since the Gamecube days. But even then I didn't care for them. It's never felt right, to me.

.... yeah... I really wish I had dual analogue for the ground portions of the game. On top of all that I'm also a lefty which means I'm double fucked. Awesome game but the controls are shit.

Almost every reviewer probably played it for only ten minutes. :|

By the end the control scheme felt subjectively fantastic. I'm shocked that people can pile on that aspect so readily.

Really?

How big are the AC3 spoilers in the podcast? I hear them talking about a prologue section but they haven't jumped into the full discussion yet. It's really the only game that I'm worried about being spoiled.

I really wish they could tread a bit lighter on the spoilers. I play a ton of games but even I haven't finished everything.

The swings from people on Kid Icarus in general are crazy. People will either swear that everyone doesn't give it enough time if they don't like it, but then there are people who beat it who still hated the controls. Then some people who swear by either the button controls instead, or that the stand fixes everything. It makes it hard to determine how I should play the game; my gaming time and money is relatively limited. My first thought is to rent it, but what if I don't like it, should I continue to try to play it for an extended period of time because some people swear it gets better and you get used to it? Or what if one of my friends is right and the stand makes it all better, do I actually go out and buy the game to get the stand and then still run the risk of not liking it? It's kind of ridiculous.

I honestly personally know people who finished the game and still hated the controls and said they struggled with it the whole time. At a certain point fans of the game need to accept that while yes, some people are probably not giving it a fair shake, there's more than enough reviewers and people who have played extensively/finished the game that hated the controls to admit there's some merit to it and it's not for everybody. Where I used to work I had one guy who completely adored the game but swore it was unplayable without the stand, then someone else who liked it but used the button controls, then a third guy who rented it and hated it, and I tended to usually align with the third guy taste-wise. The split on the game is crazy.

It's only one thing (not the ending or anything like that), but it's a pretty significant spoiler for the first few hours of the game that put it in a very different context. I was okay with getting spoiled on AC3, but I will say that up until now I had completely missed that particular spoiler and it was new to me.

I badly wanted to like Kid Icarus because everything else about it (the writing, humor and personality, upgrade/progression mechanics) seemed kind of amazing, but just could not get past the controls. Playing a game shouldn't make your hands hurt.

Personal decisions, however a couple of points after listening to the podcast.

1. Choosing Trackmania for 2011 instead of BF3 makes no sense. A game which has millions playing, still getting patched and dlc set aside for a game which Jeff personally admits is broken, and dying.

2. Jeff really shouldn't talk about Planetside 2. It is fantastic. :)
