Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Anything Rapman touches turns to gold.
Rapman is a menace to our community. His "music" perpetuates the abuse of illegal substances that are destroying our schools and neighborhoods. Just the other day, I saw a girl, couldn't have been older than 17 or 18, on a street corner downtown selling herself for some shoe strings and humming one of Rapman's songs.

Everything he touches turns to gold? More like everything he touches tarnishes at his tainted lyrical touch.

Rapman is a lyrical legend of our times, a modern-day hero who keeps it real on the streets. I'd social link with that guy any day, hunk-a-dunk or no.

i think playing spec-ops on normal is the ideal way to play the game. whether they intended it or not (some speculate), the at times tedious and downright frustrating combat only helped to immerse me deeper into what the game was trying to achieve with it's narrative. playing on easy probably isn't going to degrade the overall experience, but it certainly made me 'feel' the game a lot more than just simply watching it.

also the learning curve isn't that steep. by about halfway through the game i wasn't fighting the combat mechanics any more and i only died a handful of times, most of them in the very last area. headshots, ammo management, and being decent with every weapon are key (i..e - try not to have a favorite weapon and only stick to using that weapon/type).

As someone that doesn't like or play military shooters, would Spec Ops be worth getting for the story?
do you like and/or are interested in: the effects of war on soldiers, commentary about the American war-machine AND the fetishization of the military in popular media, the deconstruction of the "modern military shooter" genre and archetypal power fantasy of playing them, or the film apocalypse now or it's source material heart of darkness? then i'd say yes.

otherwise it's a fairly clumsy shooter with some great visuals.

The guy's so hunked up all of the time he can't even keep track of how many pair of sunglasses he put on that day! He's a bad apple, that Rapman.

I asked in the steam thread, but I didn't get a response-

It helps to have a general knowledge of some of the tropes in those games. One of the big moments in the game is a direct reference to one of the more memorable missions from one of the CoD games. I'd say it's worth it. The game is extremely short, so it's not a big deal if you don't like that type of gameplay.

I'm mostly like that (with the caveat that I try to have an open mind about games in general) and I stuck with Spec Ops. For the current Steam price, I'd say even if you hate it, it won't be a big loss to have at least found out if you like it or not.

I am going to keep hunking and listening to Rapman and you can't stop me Typographenia. Chyea!

Oh I just bought Spec Ops due to the praise. I love me a good story so seems like a game for me.

I would say so, as long as you're familiar with how a typical action movie or game would treat a military shooter

I was afraid of that. I have some general knowledge of cod and some of its contemporaries, so I was hoping that might be enough (and it likely will be, if it's something considered memorable that has likely been talked about the internet). I figured a lot of the impact came from its banking on expectation and experience of those types of games.

It's not so much the gameplay or anything that doesn't interest me, just not wild about that kind of framing/context for a game. Sounds like it would be worth looking into, though.

We've lost another one to the Rapman. When will it end?!

I wouldn't say it's required reading or anything. If you have a generalised knowledge of the way contemporary media treats military desert fighting, you're probably set.

so today's podcast pretty much confirmed GOTY 2012, right?

edit: What CoD moment is referenced in Spec Ops?

The white phosphorus moment is a criticism of the dehumanizing way in which war can be fought, but more specifically it is a direct reference to the AC-130 gunship mission in CoD4. The writer said he wanted to take the moment in CoD4 that made you feel the most strong and unstoppable, and have a very similar moment which marked the absolute lowest point in Spec Ops.

Which is kind of weird because I thought that actual scene in CoD4 was trying to do the same thing, just without the stronger agenda. I certainly didn't think it was empowering at all, reinforced by the detached nature of the soldiers commentary during that scene I thought it was all like that purposefully. Wasn't there controversy over this sequence way back when it came out?

You know, I hope Jeff somehow gets to experience some of the new Persona 4 Golden content. Even if he just watches it on youtube. It'd be interesting to see his reaction to some of this stuff. lol

Haha definitely

Some of the motorbike stuff is pretty great, and I think he'd like the ski camp

Well, the difference is that the CoD4 scene inspired several ripoff games - including a version of the game where you kill zombies from an AC-130.

Most people just see it as a cool looking thing.

It's also so anime. I wonder if that might make him hate it. lol

It's too bad the Sony hates the Vita so much. A Brad + Ryan endurance run would be fun to watch since they seem to be going through it now.

That's probably the games biggest flaw, it's too heavy handed with some of that stuff. There's one shot in particular that they cut back to 5 or 6 times in a scene, you can practically hear the devs in your ear whispering "do you feel like shit yet?" I still really enjoyed it though.

Then again, there's nothing subtle about some of the scenes in Apocalypse Now or Platoon.

Catching up on GOTY podcasts: Best Surprise. I understand Walking Dead is/will be receiving plenty of recognition, but it needed more consideration for this category. Did anyone think this game was going to be good? Telltale's recent previous games were horrible.

That would be incredible but other than how much less time they have to do endurance runs, they've mentioned they can't capture video on the vita.

Another travesty to that system not having an HDMI out.

They might even finish considering P4G is so much easier. Otherwise I'd be scratching my eyes out.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if they played it on very easy. lol

I just want to hear their reactions to some of the animeisms.

Another Endurance Run that might have been amazing would have been an Asura's Wrath ER.

I thought the same. Not saying it needs more recognition, but that game came out of nowhere and surprised me with how good it is. But hey, Asura's wrath......yeah.

I was shocked that Vinny didn't submit himself to a Dark Souls endurance run.

I'm sure there has to be a lot of trust on the publisher's part since they're basically showing the entire game in a very public way (even though I'm pretty certain it worked out fantastic for P4, and probably pretty well for Deadly Premonition)

There are so many Let's Plays out there though. Hell, the big sites do long livestreams of games nowadays too.

I figure the problematic part would be that they are earning revenue from that content. I have no idea if recording yourself play a video game counts as copyright infringement or not.

Great. I just remembered Jeff said they almost did a Yakuza 3 endurance run and now I am bummed that didn't happen.
Oh really? That's too bad. :(
Then again, between P4 and Y3... that's a tough choice.

A lot of people on twitch/youtube are partnered and get profit off of it, so it seems fine.

Well, I just uploaded some P4G videos and it said that I couldn't "monetize" them so... I have no idea. lol

I remember the Yakuza 4 quick look. It was literally just running around and dialog. But the series has enough crazy to get some rifftrax on.
The problem is that the talky scenes are really long. Not MGS4 long, but pretty long. It's quite a bit of downtime between gameplay.

I think Jeff actually did the orphanage part of Y3? I think they got bored by the time they wrapped up that QL.

Fair enough, the game loves to info dump.

i find it so weird that Jeff and Patrick dismissed CyberConnect2 the way they did talking about Asura's Wrath.

"They make NARUTO games!"

Er wait...so what? CC2 has been making awesome games for like, 15 years. It just sounds like "I don't really know what CyberConnect2 makes outside of UNS, and as such, don't give two shits about them"

(not to mention that, the subject matter aside, UNS is a shitload of fun, and painstakingly animated)

I love GiantBomb, but I constantly feel like Japanese devs get ignored or snubbed until they actually PLAY a game made by the dev, and then one of them falls in love with them (Chunsoft with 999/VLR, CC2 with Asura's Wrath, Atlus with P4, From with Dark Souls). I really wish they'd stop dismissing devs they don't actually know anything about. There's more than enough evidence to show that that kind of gut dismissal is silly.
