I see. I don't know.
It's pretty much the tipping point that pushes the game where they wanted to go. I don't think it's a game that wants to give you a morally good out. I think storywise, I would have appreciated a bit more subtly, though. They ram their point so far down your throat by the end, it looses a bit of its punch. Ok ok, I get it, I'm a miserable piece of shit. I did like the change in the tone of the voice acting. Definitely worthy of the final Northie.

I think it's a bit of a cop out, but I actually believe Williams when he said that they focus tested that part and the "average" (dudebro, stupid, etc) gamer was not able to put 2 and 2 together and figure out what was going on in that scene.

----

Also, I'm glad that they talk about Assassin's Creed and all its bullshit. Every cliffhanger in the franchise is shit and apparently it culminates in ultimate bullshit. Great.

Oh yeah, for the Lucy thing, it was addressed in fucking DLC. If you want to make a case for bullshit being explained in DLC, that is one of the most egregious examples.

Not only that, but it's in the shitty Portal-like DLC! What!?

I was really on board with Patrick when he said that the revelations in the Assassin's Creed games ultimately come out of fucking nowhere with no set-up or hints. They're sudden swerves in storytelling that have no impact because they're just totally meaningless.

The dude's a fan of terrible horror and cheap jump scares. It makes sense that he'd like it.
You're a bad person and you should feel bad for saying such things. : (

When it comes to movies and tv, Patrick is the only one on the GB staff I could ever possibly take recommendations from since we have very similar tastes. Not too similar in the games dept, but whatever.

4chan's /v/.

I'm tempted to dislike the video merely because he included Slender on that list. That's fucking shameful.

What's shameful about it? It's a remarkable game, and one of my favorites of the year as well. He's allowed to have his opinion, and that's in no way shameful. What's shameful is how one guy with limited programming experience can create a more terrifying game than 90% of the horror game studios of the past 5 years has. I'm happy he put it on there.

I suppose being bored by Slender instead of scared would be the reason I so strongly dislike it.

Doesn't help that the Slender model looks drawn in MS Paint and I laughed out loud the first time I died.

Well, to each their own, especially in regards to horror. You can certainly see I'm a fan The Slender Man mythos, but I know some simply aren't. But you have to admit Slender is one of the games that has made the most waves this year, seemingly out of nowhere. It's an experience that's resonated with a lot of people.

So watching the 4th Day Recap TWD part, is it just me or is there a lot of annoying overlapping of different people talking with Ryan's voice the loudest and everyone else's kind of soft but still can be heard in the background? For a moment I thought I had accidentally opened multiple tabs/windows of the video but nope.

I think the video was broken and they posted a fixed version. I downloaded it and was having this issue around the 22-23 minute mark when the RV was stolen. I checked the comments of the vid and apparently vinny uploaded the fixed version. Just redownloaded and its fine now.

I like the Slenderman creepypasta, that's why I checked out the game.

I will fully admit that for a free, one-man game it's actually impressive and I respect the work that went into it. I just think it's about as far outside of a "games of the year" discussion as a game possibly could be.

Other games had to be left out for Slender... I believe someone once referred to the game as "YouTube Let's Play cancer".

Well it is his personal list. It's not like he's been trying to insert it into any official Game of the Year discussion in the podcasts. I think he understands it doesn't necessarily belong in that conversation. But it was a chance to give a shout out to a unique game that really struck a chord with him and a lot of other people.

Agent Parsec posts frequently on the Unfiction Slender Man Mythos board, and he's humble and shocked by the reputation his little fan experiment has gained. As of now he's working with an indie game studio and the writers of Marble Hornets to make a sequel to Slender as a full commercial release with a substantially deeper experience. Allow me to plug my own thread about it.

Someone on the staff liked it, so I completely disagree.

I don't understand why people have so much trouble letting people have their own lists and tastes. God forbid you let someone share something they enjoyed with an audience that might possibly enjoy it. Patrick, you're not allowed to like 999 or VLR anymore. They're not up to snuff to talk about. Delete that spoilercast now before you shame Giant Bomb any further.

I think Roger Ebert once said trying to justify your subjective reaction to horror (or is it comedy?) is like trying to justify your response to porn. You can't talk away an erection.

Slender had some neat ideas that didn't at all come together, and Patrick had no bones about admitting he didn't bother to finish it. Perhaps Patrick hopes that someone can take those ideas and flesh out a better game based around them.

I'm allowed to criticize his opinion as openly as he's allowed to share it.

I'm not trying to censor his freedom of opinion, no need to white knight for him.

We can all play the reductive game to make any game sound like shit. Hell, I did it earlier with Journey and now feel like an ass about it.

but that's literally the entire game

you walk around a forest picking up pages and a store mannequin chases you around, in a game based on a years-old internet meme

I don't think the Slender Men thing makes him like the game. Like I said, the game plays well to certain fears and your arguing is pretty much ignoring that.

The title should be "Paul Barnett rambles for 15 minutes".
Please write a script next time or something.

What? NO. Then it wouldn't be Paul Barnett's (accidentally?) annual GOTY talk.

I'll admit its not nearly as effective in video format as opposed to a separate podcast but its still what you want out of the guy.

A fear of what? I guess if you're afraid of budget PS2 games and ragdolls in suits then it's terrifying, and I can't judge your tastes. Me, I'm waiting for a Flash game that exposes the pure terror of Mr. T chasing you, attempting to eat your balls. I'll make millions in YouTube ads once people see my pale face shrieking at a webcam every time a far off "foo'" sounds in the distance.

The 10 slot is basically everyone's slot to spread the word about a game you won't likely hear about otherwise.

Basically. Its not someone's "THIS IS THE BEST GAME OF THE YEAR", otherwise they would have listed it at #1. Its just an intriguing title that beat out whatever other games were tied for it. The very fact that everyone is now talking about it (for good or bad) means Slender Man was a better #10 choice Patrick than a "neutral" boring choice like Halo 4.

It's about time. I felt like a crazy person every time they would talk about how interesting and crazy all the outside-the-animus stuff was in Assassin's Creed. Every twist in that game felt like something the devs made up as they went. The only thing that has ever mattered in AC is the historical part and the ending to AC3 sounds like a joke Patrick made up.
