Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

CollectSHUN fucking killed me. Best "tv episode" so far.

I've love to see some videos on the website going through Jeff's amazing, yet bizarre, collection of games. All leading into THE RAID.

Oddly enough, yeah. I like seeing Slender on there, I like his high marks for MotN and Dishonored (a game that everyone else seemed to forget).

After listening to their most disappointing game though, I can't help but feel sorry for AC3. I read a lot of shit about it on the forums before actually playing through it myself and went in with expectations on the floor of Satan's wine cellar, but I actually thought it was pretty damn good. Certainly nowhere near the ME3 levels of clusterfuckiness from earlier in the year (though I'm the wrong person to ask about anything ME related after the first one). The vaunted AC jank, the shitty mission design, the chase sequences, none of it was bad at all, certainly no more than any other game frustrates me at times.

I'm apparently the only person in the entire universe who likes the AC games for the story though, which was primarily what carried me through it in a matter of days once I started playing. I totally agreed with Jeff's points on ME3 being just the biggest letdown after the hype generated by ME2 for the conclusion of the epic Mass Effect Trilogy. It's rare to see such a collective, mass recoil amongst players against one of their beloved franchises.

Speaking thus, I also want to say that GB seems to be on another planet with respect to Diablo 3. How that wasn't even in consideration for most disappointing game of the year boggles my mind. Diablo 3 is by far MY most disappointing game of the year, possibly of my entire gaming career. What a colossal fucking piece of shit letdown Diablo 3 was. And there's a lot of people who agree with this point of view.

It was definitely Jeff's biggest disappointment. Besides a few relatively minor issues, Brad doesn't really seem disappointed in ME3. Vinny was a big fan of both franchises but he seems mostly positive about ME3 and very negative when it comes to AC3. Patrick definitely has issues with the game but I'm not sure how high his expectations were and he didn't seem to have much love for AC3 either. Ryan seems to have more invested in Assassin's Creed. In the end, I'm not surprised.

Anger! They need to spew! Same fuckers that have them adhere to stave off spoilers for 12 months and then 5 days before the new year they say that they're going to talk about it and people still get pissed.

Agreed - Max Payne 3 is terrific on a number of counts and the only reason you could criticise it is for being very different to its predecessors tonally and mechanically. But even then, that difference was obvious from the get go; Max Payne 3 was always an obvious Rockstar joint and so even on that front it can't be seen as a disappointment.
 
I just watched day two stuff (listening to the podcasts before the videos). This might be the best GOTY award stuff ever. Makes me happy to be a subscriber.
 
I'm also happy that GB in general is fighting the good fight of taking the downloadable games out of their marginalized ghetto. A game doesn't need to have a billion dollars behind it to be any more "legitimate" than a game from a smaller team.

Walking Dead is blurring all sorts of lines.

I don't have much of a vested interest in what wins these awards, though I did appreciate Brad on the latest podcast lobbying for Journey. But aside from all that, like I said I don't care that much who wins, but it's been entertaining as hell listening and watching this stuff.

I have to imagine other web sites are watching all this and feeling a slight tinge of inferiority. These guys prove every year this GOTY shit can just be fun. Bravo.

I think everytime I've heard Paul Barnett it's been with that echo-y bad audio quality. I'm beginning to wonder if that isn't an effect and is his real voice.
 
The Alex snub at the beginning was awkward, please two me that was just some joke.

And it's great that now we truly know why Brad was growing that beard, it was the method actor in him.

You might not think so, considering everyone but Jeff has Walking Dead in their top 5, with Ryan/Patrick putting it at #2, but Jeff doesn't have it up there at all, and once they all start digging in their heels, the arguments about this being the year of the broken game are going to start flying, and once that gets breached, you will hear an argument over whether you can actually call something "Game of the Year' if it can't reliably save games, or glitches through key moments in what's already been called the best Story of the Year. The argument will find itself caught in one of those weird logical cul-de-sacs they often find themselves dead-ending into, and even though the positives of Walking Dead are, by their own admission, more and higher reaching than XCom, the fact Xcom is less broken will eventually trump all other facts, and it will be awarded Giant Bomb's GOTY.

XCOM sounded just as bad hearing them describe its bugs. At least the save game fix took like 15 seconds for most people in TWD.
 
The only thing I disagree with is the absence of Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer from the Multiplayer category. It just seemed like the majority of the group didn't wan't Mass Effect anywhere on there.

Also Journey would've been my winner. But I haven't player NFS:MW.

I completely agree with Jeff, Mass Effect's multiplayer is boring as hell.

Call of Duty, Halo, or countless other titles like Natural Selection II, Syndicate, Guild Wars 2, Borderlands, or even Sonic Kart racing had better multiplayer this year.
 
I barely played any games this year, but listening to all their deliberations makes me want to pick up a few games. I'll probably buy Mark of the Ninja, I feel like I missed the boat on Fez though. Still worth a buy?

Fez is absolutely still good, and there are more faqs than ever if you give up on the meta-game but still want to see how it shakes out. I'm willing to bet there'll be an eventual PC port if that's your platform of choice, though.
 
I get the feeling the XCOM/Walking Dead debate is going to come down to Patrick & Vinny siding with Walking Dead, Ryan & Jeff siding with XCOM, and Brad being in the middle ground. He ultimately sides with Walking Dead, as vengeance for Jeff drowning ME3 to the #8 spot.

My most fun 'traditional' multiplayer was Mass Effect 3. Especially if you have a close group of friends.
 
They'll give it to X-Com because it seems like everybody liked it and it's "more of a game" than Walking Dead.
 
I think the top 3 are locks in some order but I have no idea what they are gonna put in those 4-10 spots. Here is my final guess at their top 10:

That had to be planned, it's just too perfect.

I think you're about right, but I'm not sure ME3 will make the list. I feel like Brad put it high on his own list and that's enough. I don't think he'll fight for it as a general game of the year nominee because it is a broader, less personal category, and in such a category its more difficult to ignore the negative experience that most people had. Vinny might pull for it, but I wouldn't count on it. I'm gonna take your list and modify it just a bit 'cause I think you're mostly right:

1. X-COM
2. Walking dead
3. Far Cry 3
4. Fez
5. Journey
6. FTL
7. Mark of the Ninja
8. Forza Horizon
9. Asura's Wrath
10. Need For Speed: Most Wanted
 
I think it's unfair for the entirety of the Walking Dead series to be considered for the downloadable category. They were individual releases; they should've selected one particular episode or had all of them compete with one another individually.
 
Just finished Asura's Wrath. I think it would have made more of an impact if I hadn't known most of the big moments due to GB coverage, but it's my own fault for sitting on my copy for this long anyway. Not sure I can bring myself to pay for the DLC episodes, though, I'm just going to try to Youtube them.
