Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Nice that Alex left the snark and sarcasm at home for this one. Even better that TWD didn't win. I like it but it's
overrated.

Vinny put Journey on his top 10 list? I don't even know who you are anymore, Vinny. I never would have guessed that would make your list.

Adventure games are baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaac(they never left)
Going to have to get book of unwritten tales soon. I've been waiting for it to get a daily deal or a flash deal during the sale, but there's been a disturbing lack of adventure games on sale this time.

No Dave Top 10? Awww. I was hoping for a Crusader Kings 2 mention, etc.

As much as I love Giant Bomb, there are some gaping vacuums of genre that the 'main' crew don't provide for. Dave/Drew go a long way toward filling much of that space.

I'm at least glad they made mention of Dyad. I had a pretty great time with that game in a mind-altered state.

It was the only downloadable console game I even bothered to buy this year other than Journey.

I'm surprised no one challenged Brad more on Mass Effect 3. The disgust was almost palpable during the day 1 recap, yet they cut stuff like FTL, Hotline Miami, Forza and placed ME3 above Sleeping Dogs. Brad's filibuster ability is like mutually assured podcast destruction.

Kinda shocked that Syndicate was so high strictly from Jeff's own willpower.

Horizon should have had that spot imho, since it was more crewmembers liking that game, but you can't fight jeff.

Huh, have we listened to the same podcasts? It was basically Brad handing it to Vinny everytime since he did not wanted to be in the spot defending it. Vinny has ME3 also on his list, props to him.
Vinny was even fighting stronger for ME3.

Vinny seemed awfully down on Journey considering that he had it on his own personal top 10 list. Anybody else feel like front and center during this part of the cast, these guys should have their own top 10 lists in front of them so that they don't make the stupid mistake of contradicting themselves?

XCOM was the right choice for them.

Alex was tolerable to good in this. Why can't he be that laid back more often and not such an annoying idiot? If 2013 Alex is like that then I won't mind him on content.

Overall, I think they sold a fuckload of games short and didn't even recognise some that deserved to be in the top 10, but hey, that's always the case.

Glad the debate this year was a reasonable length and didn't involve Brad being a bulldozer like he was in previous years.

Parodies were great.

It was at the bottom on his list and this is the top 10 of the whole of giantbomb. You have to make some compromises and obviously other games were more important to him than journey. Aknowledging the flaws of a game you like is not contradicting yourself.

It just seemed like ME3 slipped into the top 10 without them really grilling it like those other games that got cut. I barely remember them talk about ME3 in this last podcast at all. Maybe I'll listen again, but not even Vinny seemed that high on it when Brad asked.

XCOM is my personal game of the year and while I enjoyed TWD, I feel it has gotten vastly overrated. With that said, I was pretty surprised how there was very little fight on behalf of TWD at the end. I was expecting a pretty heated back and for between the two games, but that fight never really materialized. Also, the back-end of the top 10 had some questionable selections based pretty much on one persons strong opinion.

Good final podcast, even if it wasn't quite as intriguing or heated as last year's. It seemed that lots of concessions were made by people to get their personal picks into the bottom-half of the Top 10 (Jeff, Brad, Patrick and Vinny getting the games they wanted...unfortunately for Alex, he was consistently snubbed!).

You could really split the Top 10 into 3 distinct parts:

* 7-10: Personal picks that people just wanted to make the Top 10, but didn't care at all about placement, just that they were recognized. Jeff got Syndicate, Patrick got ZombiU, Vinny got Sleeping Dogs and Brad got Mass Effect. Everyone seemed fairly diplomatic about everyone (minus Alex) being satisfied overall with the list. Hotline: Miami vs. The Field didn't get quite as contentious as Mortal Kombat vs. Rayman for the #10 spot last year.

* 4-6: The downloadable titles that everyone liked and agreed needed to be in the Top 10, but weren't seriously in the running for GotY. The only real question was their ordering, as there was a pretty even split on how everyone would order these games. Last year, everyone pretty much shrugged on the 3-10 ordering and just went with it, saving the debate for Skyrim vs. Saints Row.

* 1-3: The games with the only serious consideration for overall GotY.

Overall, an interesting listen as always. I'm not too surprised that X-COM won, though I am a little surprised that no one but Alex really fought that hard for TWD. Everyone seemed to have liked both games, but the general feeling I got was that Brad wasn't willing to go higher than #2, regardless of what game it was up against. I think that was the big difference between this year and previous years, Brad didn't have a #1 choice that he was willing to go the distance to fight for. His fight this year would have been for ME3, and I'm a little relieved that he was willing to concede that battle.

As far as some of the other rewards, I wish they stuck it to RE6 for either Most Disappointing or Worst Game. With that series' pedigree, the developer/publisher, the size of the development team and the budget...to end up with a bad game is staggering. The signs of it maybe being not that great were there early on, but still -- going into 2012, if I told you RE6 was coming out in the fall, you'd expect it would be a contender for Overall GOTY, not WGOTYPBAN. While there were technically worse games, no other game fell nearly as far short of its aim in terms of quality. It's really inexcusable for a numbered RE game to turn out like it did.

I think Dave mentioned during some live stream that this year, between work and getting married, he just didn't have time to play a lot of the games he wanted to play.

They've never really been fans of the franchise, so it being disappointing wouldn't be that big of a deal. It's surprising and unacceptable sure, but with the other two were bigger disappointments considering how much they loved the franchises.

But that doesn't make sense because he was the only one who was down on Journey. We had Brad, Patrick and Ryan all pining for it, and Vinny's trying to keep it out for some reason.

And it goes beyond this one I'm sure, this is just the particular example that stood out to me. I can't be sure that these guys weren't repeatedly and constantly saying things contradictory to their personal lists because I wasn't keeping track of it--hence why they should.

Indeed. We basically had Brad and Vinny in favor of ME3 where everyone else was really upset with it. It's amazing how it can go from a really tight contender for Most Disappointing to 8th on their best games.

It's 50 percent off right now on Steam. $9.99 or $12 and some change for the digital deluxe edition. I believe it's on sale until Jan. 5. I've been meaning to pick this up too, so I'll probably bite.

Could just be hard feelings after the whole flower debacle.

I said some bad words about Take 2 regarding the XCOM shooter, and I've never been happier to be wrong.

Bring back Myth please?

I'm sure there was no warning in the intro.

They may just have warned on the first podcast now that I think of it, but anyone who knew anything about these goty deliberations would know that giantbomb have said they will spoil anything and everything.

That being said, patrick did spoil things for little to no reason very often throughout the whole week of podcasts.

It just seemed weird to me. Journey was a shoe-in for the middle of the list, everyone loved it, it was a unique experience unlike any other, and with games like ZombiU and Syndicate kicking around that most of them didn't even play, and ME3 that was almost named their biggest disappointment, the discussion just seemed oddly fixated on Journey for a time.

I'm sensitive to people who don't want to be spoiled and there are a handful of games that I will avoid spoilers for myself, but it was so refreshing to hear them just talk about the games without a spoiler filter. The hour long ME 3 discussion was great a few weeks ago too.

I share this sentiment, as well.

Exactly! I wish patrick would have even spoilered the ending of Papo & Yo.

Syndicate is a cool game but compared to the likes of FTL and Hotline: Miami, it has no business being on a top ten list. Riddick and The Darkness were far better games from starbreeze. Hell, The Darkness 2 was a better shooter.

I agree that FTL deserved to be in their top ten, but syndicate was much better than you're giving it credit for. Hotline: Miami was very one-note, and really only got the attention it did because of the amazing soundtrack.

FORGET YOU, ALEX. NEVERDEAD WAS AN OKAY GAME.
Alex made some excellent pulls there for some of the titles missing from the list, though.

Also, Patrick, I don't know whether to encourage you or dissuade you from finishing AMY. I had a miserable, miserable time playing it (and that last level/boss is horrendous). However, I'm probably going to return to it at some point because the trophies messed up while I was playing it and I didn't get the chapter 3 or chapter 4 trophies. Why do I do this to myself?

Yeah, I get why AC3 "won" Most Disappointing. I just wish when it came to Worst Game, they would have made an example of RE6 and piled on it a bit. All of the other games they had nominated for Worst Game (a Kinect game, a Family Guy game, a downloadable survival horror game and a portable Call of Duty), I wouldn't have been too surprised if they ended up as bad as they were. That a new numbered RE game made it on the same list as those games is just embarrassing. As a huge longtime fan of the series, I wish they held it to the fire.
