Giantbomb GOTY 2012 Thread: Videos, Top 10's, and podcasts lots and lots of podcasts.

Welp, no upset this year. X-Com took it as it should have based on their personal lists. No surprise Walking Dead was second. Far Cry 3 third though, dang. I really should play that. I'm surprised Syndicate made it. Jeff must have made a hell of an argument.

I burst out laughing at Vinny playing Sleeping Dogs. Completely different from how I played the game and so much more fun to watch.

I literally breathed a sigh of relief when I saw XCOM won their GotY. Even though I have Walking Dead #1 on my own list (and XCOM something like #3, since I can't bring myself to dislike Mass Effect 3), I did not want to witness the shitstorm if TWD had won.

You are the only person on earth who liked that game.
Just about... : (

Patrick really needs to go back and play Dark Souls with his love of Zombie U.
He mentioned in his spoilercast for 999 that he feels he has a better understanding for the appeal of the slower, repetitive nature of some of these Japanese titles he might have written off in the past. I don't know if he'll actually go back to those earlier titles, but I wouldn't be shocked if he gave Dark Souls 2 a shot when it drops.

Need to pick up Darkness II still. I wasn't that interested in the first, but I was really into the QL and the look of the game.

That's for damn sure. If ZombiU was "unbelievable", he is going to lose his mind when he plays Dark Souls.

It's also too bad none of them seemed to play Hotline Miami very much. Only Alex seemed to be past the point where you think guns suck and are hard to aim. Once you get used to aiming in that game, you become a merchant of death comboing your way through entire floors. The way you play that game when you're comfortable with it definitely isn't taking guys out one by one with melee weapons.

Ahhh, gotcha!

Well it sounds like he's toned it down a bit for this which is good news. I guess it was like finding out Adam Sandler was going to be in the final season of Breaking Bad at first.

You know, I can understand that you don't like certain people. It's the insults you toss his way every post is what makes me think you have issues.

If Patrick went back to Demon's and Dark Souls and loves them as some of the best games ever made like any sane man would, he would probably become my second favourite Bomber after Vinny.

He's pretty close as it is. Do it for my endorsement, Patrick.

I really like both games, but they are very different in terms of pacing and difficulty.
Eh, I think there's some valid comparisons to draw between the two.

Particularly with the pacing and the necessary mindset to succeed. Preparation and caution are everything in both games. Of course, they're different genres with different focuses, but I definitely felt reminded of Dark Souls more than once while playing ZombiU.

But just because you like one has little bearing on liking the other, so yeah.

I dunno what Walking Dead's performance was like on 360 but Patrick is completely off about the PS3 version having no issue. Had my share of bugs and hitching with it.

Patrick heelying up to the arcade machine and then "pwning" it was the best moment out of these videos.

I really find these "Well I never ran into any glitches!" arguments annoying as hell.

I had no major issues with Walking Dead on 360. Couple minor things. I guess it's all pretty personal stuff, so I dunno if Patrick was bluffing or just him recounting his genuine experience.

In other news I just bought XCOM on Steam. The latest videos and podcasts have been a great advertisement for it, so decided I need to check it out.

Is it a commonly held opinion that the gunplay in Sleeping Dogs is bad? I though it was pretty damn good. Better than GTA IV for damn sure and I would say better than Saints Row the Third, which I played immediately before Sleeping Dogs.

You're right, Jeff, Hotline Miami isn't Super Meat Boy. It's better!

Have to strongly disagree with Patrick saying that when you turn to guns it is because you blew it. I loved using lots of different things I would pick up just to see how things worked out. I end up going to guns really frequently, and it's not when things go bad.

It was ok, just not as good as the hand to hand. Slow motion jumping out of cover is what makes it fun though.

I used guns a lot, but I would always feel like I was letting myself down when I would use them—like I took the easy way out.

Horse mask and melee felt like the 'right' way to play it for me. But that's all just personal preference.

Oh yeah, the hand to hand combat was what made the game special for me but I thought the gunplay was done well, especially considering how little there was. Alex seems to feel like it almost ruined the later parts of the game, which I completely disagree with.

I don't think it ruined it but there was just too much of it. Having to go hand to hand for most of the game and then suddenly most of the missions are your standard third person shooting stuff is kind of a disconnect.

Though I guess it does fit the theme.

As someone skipping the podcasts because I have not finished ME3 or TWD, that top ten list sounds like it was made with some heavy Jeff influence. But then again, it usually does.

After listening to yesterday's podcast, I was really surprised that the group didn't choose ME3 as Most Disappointing Game. Jeff's closing argument for that game getting the award was pretty solid.

Guns always made me more frantic since I would have less time to plan out things. Kept me moving and on my toes! Also, the panther mask is my favorite now, I think. I was leaning towards the frog or the tiger/cat with fists of fury, but moving fast is so much fun.

Glad somebody else noticed that, haha.

Guns were fine in Hotline Miami. They took more technique then just running up to guys and whaling, but were really fun and useful in later levels. It's a shame the two awesome PC exclusives(FTL, Hotline) got shut out

XCom is hard to judge because it's great on the first playthrough, but there isn't much variety for repeated runs, which is what you'd traditionally want in a strategy game. I can see why journalists who won't generally have a ton of time to dedicate to any one game love it

Not sure if you were the guy also saying controller was impossible, but you can easily do the same thing with melee weapons along with weapons. In fact, you typically get a lot higher scores by using everything. Doors, executions, shooting guys, throwing weapons and then picking up random stuff.

Yeah, the non-randomized levels are my biggest issue with that game.

Dark Souls is a much more daunting game because the second you leave the tutorial area you're dropped flat on your ass in front of a bonfire that has nothing but menus filled to the brim with stuff you have absolutely no possible way of knowing what is unless you either fuck around enough with it or consult outside sources. That, and the fact that you either have to luck out and walk there by accident, or figure out that asking the dude next to the bonfire will eventually tell you where you should actually go from there.

It's really not that daunting. There's a lot of hyperbole about Dark Souls. Pay attention, take it slow and anyone can do it.

I'm far from great at games and I've finished both Souls games fairly easily.

Have you played it before? Otherwise you might want to check out that RE6 tips thread to minimize frustration.

I have, more than half the game. I own that shit. Except Jake chap 3 which is garbage. I just lost my co-op partner to real life and then delayed my return till after the patch. I'ma plat that ish.

It's funny how fast Borderlands 2 just disappeared off the list. I just bought that season pass and I'm not sure I'll even go back to that content. lol

Oh yeah, with the video, I can't believe that it's actually called the </br> room. I thought they were joking when they brought that up.

Brad's "the only thing good... was my riddance" line made me laugh out loud, but Vinny also had some great lines.
