E3 Hype Begins.... Who Really Needs to Bring It Hard This E3?

To be honest everyone. And that includes all the big third party publisher's as well.

There's not a single publisher where I've been majorly happy with the games they've released recently. I guess the only one I've really been happy with is Square Enix's Eidos line

Just call them Eidos, there is no Square or Enix in anything they launch for consoles anymore outside of XIII..... so sad...

Yeah I don't understand it either. You'd think with the last couple launches people would be more wary that the market simply isn't accepting anything expensive or possibly much at all. The idea of spec bumps being meaningful to anyone is almost laughable. Sony and MS need new propositions whether hardware or software, anything short of that is going to insta-fail (and it might anyway if the price isn't good enough).

I think spec bumps are relevant to some people, just not to the mass market in an obvious way (this stuff looks cooler than the last stuff vs there's less AA and a few points where the game stutters in cut-scenes compared to another console because of a RAM bottleneck).

A vast majority of those things are going to happen so you will be disappointed. It's showing stuff that is not even in production or ready to be released so glithcy demos, cringe worth presenters (let's be honest here, if it's not Citizen Kane level of presentation GAF will call it a 'disaster' or 'trainwreck'), etc ... Of course they are probably going to push their own IPs as well as (hopefully) new ones.

But you are going to be in for disappointment because I think you just described every E3 since its inception, lol.

Well, that's sort of what I mean - those saying 'Oh, there's new consoles this year so it will be awesome by default' are excluding the possibility that one or both of the consoles may be bad, or at least give a bad first impression. It happens.

I'm expecting all of the above because this is pretty much every E3, except I see MS releasing this year for sure, and I don't see Sony embracing region locking.

Well, I wasn't thinking about one or both platforms in particular, merely changes, announcements or scenarios where things could go horribly wrong for people who are expecting e3 to be awesome by virtue of the console unveiling alone.

People saying/assuming that just announcing new consoles will be enough are amusing as there are dozens of things that Sony/Microsoft could do to kill hype, or at least dampen it (at least for me).

-Less than expected visual jump
-No (or limited) actual footage (CG only)
-Anti-used games policy
-2014 release date
-Overly focusing (10+ minutes demos) on 'casual' concepts like Kinect 2.0, Move, or Wonderbook.
>Increase in cost of basic online service (with/without noticable improvements to said service)<
-Region locking
->US$400 for the 'basic model'
-'Sameness' about game concepts (Ridge Racer! Gears of War! Forza 99! Assassain Creed 3: Brotherlations etc)
-Unfavorably received new controllers (like Sony's Boomerang) or 'me too' tablet controllers.
-Lack of next-gen exclusive 3rd party titles (strong focus on 'cross-gen' games for the first Christmas)
-Stage demos working poorly
-Providing insufficient details
>Ungainly OS<
-Awkward or glitchy stage demos
-Cringe-worthy presenters or presentations

And so on.

I bet both the Xbox 3 and PS4 have the bolded, the Xbox will have the italicised the >arrowed< (since quotes automatically italicise) and the PlayStation will have the underlined.

They all do. It's not enough to just show new consoles. They have to be consoles worth wanting.

First post etc...
Please don't be a repeat of E3 2012. It'll be time to drop the bomb, for real.
Ubisoft winning last E3 was because Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo conference were bad.

As a business Sony needs to have a strong showing far more than anyone else. They have been losing money for years and are now valued roughly the same as Xerox adn Staples and less than half of Yahoo and 7-11. Obviously it's not all due to games, but as a company they are really down and out.

They all need to have a good showing but I'm not going to fall for any hype this year. In face I'm not even going to bother taking off work to watch this year. Last year made the half day off (for the Nintendo conference) worthless. I'll just catch the recaps or videos after I get home.

I am curious as to what Sony is going to do. They (Sony as a whole) have serious financial issues and what direction they go in will be interesting to see. I don't care at all what Microsoft is doing. I have no interest in paying for Xbox Live (thought about it recently but decided against it) and anything they put out will be heavily invested in that. I also have no big interest in any of their IPs. I'd pay for PlayStation Plus before I ever give money for Live in the end. Nintendo's next batch of games are what I'm looking forward too but I expect to be disappointed by their actual presentation at the moment. That could change once they put forward a clear direction for the Wii U and it's games in the coming months.

Everyone's under pressure to bring it this year:

Nintendo: Still needs to convince people to buy WiiU by showing games that aren't year old ports.

Sony: Needs to show everyone that Vita still has lots of life and possibly give it a price cut. They also need to show people what they have in store for next gen to get the hype started.

Microsoft: Like Sony they need to show off their next gen offerings.Given the countdown they started this seems like a given.

Everyone needs to have the games that delivers. No CG trailers, trailers from other systems, or just logos or anticipated titles. They need to come with gameplay of those games.

I think Nintendo will try to show 3rd party stuff and maybe one game they think is a 'killer', but will fall flat because of presentation or translation errors.... most likely a 1 hour live gameplay demo of something. I also expect them to announce an iPhone app with questionable functionality.

Sony will show some over the top tech demo that will make jaws drop while it is shown, only to deliver something not quite as good. They will probably have the biggest 'WTF?!" moment of the conference. I also expect them to announce a partnership or hardware that makes everyone groan.... like a Time Warner exclusive content or PS4 built into a Sony TV.

Microsoft will show their new console and talk about everything it can do, except play games. I also vote them most likely to coin a new phrase to decribe the new XBOX as the center of the media universe and to also anounce a device that uses the xbox marketplace and media features, but doesn't play games.... and your grandma will buy it thinking it is the new xbox.

And so on.

Picked out some I think will likely happen.
Visual Jump? I think it'll meet my expectations but I expect a lot of 'showing light from different angle' bollocks; some might be concerned that this is the first 3D gen that isn't going to see a real jump in IQ; so I think some people have some impossible standards. Meanwhile any taking advantage of resolution will be rendered a bit useless by the over abundance of PC builds for the last few years.

I actually wasn't worried about CG, it seemed superfluous. But I realised with Dark Souls that devs would be announcing games that are due of the next 2 years or so and the only real content they'll have is some early material or less. Needing CG involvement. But am not overly worried, and I think the game play there will make up for it.

I still think MS won't announce a date. Sony? Who knows. 2013 release date could cause some good spark. 2014 for both would kill the conference; especially if their sitting discussing current gen games for Winter 2013.

Price will be high I suspect. But who knows, maybe one of them will bite looking to gain the world market. Though I doubt it; its profit time for everyone and MS are moving to create a cheap SKU that I suspect is there just because they realised the 720 couldn't compete with Sony for gamers and the lower price less game orientated market at the same time; basically to see films, TV, subscription services etc. Sign of a bit more of a higher price than 360 anyway; as are current tech costs.

Controllers. If one of them makes a small 4" screen or so; purely for OS and online functionality, I'll be excited. However I suspect MS will be showing off Surface for 20 minutes. Mostly because I doubt Kinect will get much of a showing whatsoever.

OS. I suspect Sony will shine with a new OS (moving on Nintendo's Miiverse too); but unless the Windows 8 sales have allowed the Xbox team to push back against Microsoft's cannibalisation I think this is going to be a seriously sore point of their conference. Expect time spent with the second SKU showing off the Metro functionality, and also how 720's now like Windows and can INTERACT WITH OFFICE OF A TABLET or something.

Region locking/Anti-Used will be present (I expect if MS aren't licensing out Xbox to Japan they'll drop that regions lock); but go unmentioned. Leaking out over the next few months through word of mouth.

Pleasant Surprises I suspect to see:
- Third parties shine, they've been working on new game concepts furiously for 2-3 years now; dropping them due to last gen capabilities. First parties I do expect the 'sameness' to the degree that they'll mostly be ignored.

- Kinect given a backseat. Okay I know the usual thing is 'Sony are irrational' but looking at the likes of Windows 8 its clear that Microsoft has gone a bit fucking barmy. Good sound logic says the Kinect will get a backseat. Its selling much poorer than MS were surely expecting this year. Its just not something the market is interested in all that much. Possible the second SKU will have Kinect focus though (it will have games, we just don't know what); in which case a bigger push may be made if MS really is taking two different platforms in two different directions. Generally though Kinect 2.0 will get its own conference and possibly not release till 2014.
MS presenters will still act like a bunch of fucking mental loony people and say 'Xbox' all the time to do things.

- Sony/MS both seem very close and competitive. Although this is maybe not a good thing as there is no 'cheaper option'.

- Xbox Live gets new features and a price drop when bought on a 720. Such a good goal for MS to score and basically kickstart the upgrading. Every Live purchase for a consumer on a 360 is now a negative purchase if their planning to one day upgrade. And you can bet the 720 will also be planned around selling people even more stuff. So this would all be great.

- Better multiplatform quality. Less ports and more cross development at the initial stages.

- Uber-Minecraft.

- If all this fails, Samsung teamed up with their newly bought SEGA will be round the back with a bunch of stuff they can mix and match to come and come in and take over the market whilst doing the traditional South Korean Dance; Gangnam Style. If its successful, awesome! If it fails, lol!

It will be pics of a HD Zelda, Mario Cart, Mario Brawl, Mario Sports, Mario Fishing, Mario Dancing, Mario @$%@#%^ etc. That's their focus and they will push the $hit outta their giant cash cow to move WiiU's and all of teh upcoming upcoming shovelware/software that the system needs and games that made the Wii so popular....

Nintendo Direct Retail Version; $59.99

Square Enix needs to bring the hype this year.

It they're touting this is Lightning's last battle, prove it! Get that marketing campaign on a roll, for the New Year, for Type-0 in the West and Versus XIII!

MS needs to bring the Nextbox with a strong and diverse lineup of games.. I love Halo, and really enjoy Gears.. But I want to see more originality from MS. Bring on some new IPs, and not just Kinect stuff.

I think Microsoft will continue with great XBLA exclusive titles, which need to be taken seriously as exclusives when looking at Microsoft's supposed lack of exclusives towards the end of this cycle.

Everyone really.
And honestly... I hope there are some surprises. The constant leakage for the past few years has been disappointing.

You do know right.... I mean.... You have to know.... you just have to...

I was severely disappointed last E3 by most of the conferences but mostly Nintendo's.

I was counting down the days telling my cousins how it's going to be Nintendo's comeback and instead I was left looking at banana gifs.

Nintendo imo needs to seriously bring their A-game to the table come this June.
They NEED to at least show a Smash 4 trailer and some footage of a new 3D Mario game or Zelda or even wow us with some surprise games.

I can't really justify buying a WiiU right now because there is nothing out now nor coming out in the future to my knowledge that's a system seller imo.

All Sony needs to do is reveal a smart price(nothing over $450) with significant upgrades in all departments and I'm sold. Hell if they reveal a frigging new Naughty Dog game(UC4) or anything with over the top action I'd go reserve the PS4 that night if possible.

MSFT I'm not really looking forward to honestly as besides Halo and Gears I've never been to fond of Xbox since getting a PS3. Their heavy focus on Kinect, third party media apps and windows 8 like dashboard updates have put me off. Not to mention their toll for "samey" online gaming performance(Halo 4 lag) is abhorrent imo but that's a different story.

Nintendo. I'm sure the others won't have any problems getting the gaming press drooling over pretty graphics. But Nintendo needs to hit it hard. They need to show they have an interesting software line-up, and the WiiU is not just Xbox360 1.0.1 with a tablet controller.

I pretty much know what to expect from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft so I would have to say third parties and PC support. PC already has a pretty big install base that's "Next-Gen Ready" so I think it would be a mistake to overlook it. Third party PC support has been good, but it could be much better.

I'd also like to see something happen for indie devs. There's been a revival of old school 2D games and budget friendly mobile games that should be looked at and expanded on. It would be nice if they could find some type of publisher or work around besides kickstarter. An announcement at E3 about a legitimate solution would be nice to hear. Maybe someone like Gamecock or Ouya will come out of left field and completely disrupt the market again.

If both MS and Sony reveal their new consoles then there is very little Nintendo can do to compete, all the focus will be on the new hotness.

Definately Microsoft. They do not have the advantage of being the first anymore and all of their first party are dead except Halo and Forza. They will reveal console, new Kinect and Halo 5. There will be 40 minutes of new Halo 5 gameplay (nothing different than 4, even the graphics) and then a prerecorded Kinect 2 gameplay shit. Rare? Lionhead? No. At final moments some useless singer will appear and everyone will close their streaming tab.

Sony will do fine, they'll do best. PS4 will appear with games from Insomniac, Sucker Punch, polyphony, Media Molecule and Evolution. Nobody can tell if the graphics are better than PS3 games, but hey, they ARE new games. Console will be powerful, but indie/PSN games will get all the attention.

Vita? What Vita?

Nintendo will aim casual with this E3, they will announce Facebook/iPad killer types of games. An Animal Crossing integrated with Miiverse or Wii U Tomodachi Collection. Retro and Monolith will be there and show will conclude with MegaTON SSB4 trailer.

They will ignore their handheld just like Sony.

Not a fan of Microsoft I take it?

Both MS and Sony need to:

Innovate their market places
Have their own version of miiverse
Be extremely competitive in pricing and values for next gen hardware

I'm not hyping E3 this year for reasons
E3 2012
, but I do hope Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft really bring it this year.

Everyone needs to bring it hard every year. I really think that last year was ho-hum because everyone was ready to show off next gen stuff but the big two pulled out at the last minute.

Why do you think they pulled out?

I don't know. It sounds to me like Microsoft and Sony knew what they were going to focus on. Unfortunately, Microsoft's announcements reaked of 2011's while Sony continued with its bad habit of sticking with game announcements it already revealed prior to E3, but Vita was just overlooked because Sony didn't have anything to discuss about it, otherwise they would have. 3DS had a piss poor showing, but it was made worse when it was given its own separate conference. As for Wii U, the conference literally went downhill after Pikmin 3's announcement.

You do know right.... I mean.... You have to know.... you just have to...

Wishful thinking my man, that's all it is on my part, I know. You DO realize this is all opinion though, right? You might want to re-read the title of the tread. This is what I think they *need* to do.

I agree with Kagari though. The last time I've been suuuuper hyped about game announcements was like 1999. The good ol' golden age for Sony.

Sony really needs to bring it, they must immediately get inside our ass when E3 happens. They need to pull our collective asshole open, step into the asshole, close the door behind them. Then they take a spray can right, spray Sony was here, wash me all that shit, fuck our whole asshole up. Get a snickers bar, paper, throw that on the floor, fuck our whole asshole up. Then they need to open up that asshole one more time, step out our ass, then leave that motherfucker wide open so we know they've been there.

Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony will be as progressively uninspired as they have been the last X amount of years, but this time I'm willing to bet Gaf is going to be super impressed because new hardware = better visuals. Gifs will be quoted, and requoted, and requoted.

Nintendo and Sony

MS and Sony are probably going to show off their nextgen plans during E3. Nintendo could get in more trouble if those platforms get some crazy nextgen game announcements.

And Sony needs to do something about the Vita. Support it, or drop it and focus on the Ps4.

They all do.

Nintendo doesn't have that Wii magic again. I like my Wii U console but my games library is lonely. I have ZombiU which I love. Call of Duty because of lack of shooters. Only game I'm looking forward to is Monster Hunter. I'm not a nintendo core games fan so I need new ip's and not ports.

Microsoft has built a solid fanbase, a crazy fanatic one to rival other fanbases. A solid understanding of networks, development tools and appreciation of developers, not surprising coming from a software background. The thing is, and not really related to E3 but next gen in general. IF they release reliable hardware (power cords issues with xbox and disc scratching/rrod/lack of hardware features early on) will their sales match this gen? I know at least just under 10 people personally not including online friends who have each bought a minimum of 3 xbox 360s and at most 7 xbox 360's due to rrod, disc scratching, hdmi port upgrade, quiter fan promises etc. If the hardware is reliable, the numbers may look a lot different next gen. Also during the courtship they gave out warranties, paid for gta and final fantasy etc. Are they going to throw money around again or rely on their place in the gaming world to speak for itself.

Sony, Sony Sony Sony,. They have a reversal of public opinion to do. Online and feature competences to display to rival not only MS's features but now Nintendo's TVii. Their first party line up is stellar. But their promotion is shit, too many projects, horrible release dates. I'd like to see a third party relationship similar to what ms has with call of duty. A former employee said something about sony should stick to its core gamer and not so much the casual. Let MS and Nintendo battle that arena. I'd prefer a marriage of playstation and games like Bad Company or ARMA series than trying to wrestle COD fans from MS. General consumer and media perception is still key for them. Sony could release a mix of free online, some pay wall some non pay wall apps, music while you play, great competitive graphics and game lineups, their own streaming services to rival netflix and even game streaming, all equal to if not better than microsoft, with for added measure the cure for cancer but would still need to win over public opinion. They need to step up their offerings in terms of development tools with third parties. Increase support for things the competition won't do. Free Games/Content, PC Mod support, etc. A bigger controller, please no 360 clone.

For instance, I still scratch my head over this gen's hardware choice. The 3 year warranty is great but it took a while, there was never a fix until the 360 slim, no hdmi, proprietary hard drives, pay wall, non standard audio jacks, no free content and people still preferred ms over sony. To pick a hardware that you know will fail makes no sense to me. But this is the type of public that sony has to try and win over.

I'm not convinced MS is going to be ready to launch this fall either. A quality current gen game takes about two years give or take, so how long does a quality next gen game take to make?

Why do you think Microsoft has only been releasing Forza/Halo/Fable/Gears?

this statement is hyperbolic as fuck, but so many people seem to believe it's actually true, so whatevs

We know they've got multiple studios, including Rare and Black Tusk, working on core games. Black Tusk has apparently cut Kinect from their project. Ryse is presumably being massively retooled. Remedy is rumored to be working on something, Lionhead's working on some MMO-like game... interesting stuff's afoot at Microsoft.

IIRC, they were working with Obsidian at one point on an RPG, but that fell through. Sad, because none of the first-parties have any RPGs aside from Fable, which is... such an unusual take on the genre.

(power cords issues with xbox and disc scratching/rrod/lack of hardware features early on)

Wasn't the disc scratching the result of people being IDIOTS and moving their 360s around while the power was on? I remember one gaming website did this when the 360S launched. On video, they picked up and moved the console while it was on, then pulled out the disc (Alan Wake, IIRC), and were all "YUP 360 SCRATCHES DISCS CONFIRMED."

All I know is I've got money this year so buying things won't be a problem. Hopefully there is a ton of good stuff announced.

And things that fall through don't mean the everything stops between 2 companies or on the IP with a separate company. Taking into account that they haven't even gone on the record about 2 of their development houses that they put together or named them to the public.

For me I hope next gen consoles (new Xbox and PS4) go back to just focusing on the games. Making the games sell the system instead of a kinect, Move or some lame gimmick. Its nice to have those things as side projects to perhaps attract casual consumers but I dont want them to be a focus. Just make everything about the games like it was last gen.

Another thing that concerns me is that I dont want these things announced at E3. That doesnt give much time to showcase games if they're actually talking about the console itself the majority of the time. Just announce them at some event prior.

Kinect, move, extra controllers, etc. are here to stay. Wishing them away won't change a thing. Since the broader audience that like these controllers usually don't jump on new, more expensive hardware, so I'm hoping that it will still be core-focused, regardless of the impute device used.

Also I think it's safe to say both will be revealed prior to E3.

I hyped up last E3 way too much last year. Not doing that again, despite the fact that this years E3 could be insaaaaaane.

Nintendo, just show me smash 4 and everything else will just be icing in the cake. If I don't see smash by E3 at the very latest, I'm going to headbutt a knife.

Microsoft need to go 720 blowout on us. However I have the feeling it will be in the last 20 minutes of a conference filled with shooters and kinect and dashboard updates with features only avalible to US gold owners.
But I want to believe...

Sony neeeeeeeeeeeeeed to show they aren't in the middle of a mid life crisis and sort out the vita situation. Gimme gammmeeesssss Sony. I have money here waiting for you, just meet me halfway.

Well all three definitely need to 'bring it' this E3.

Speaking specifically about Nintendo, I think they will spend some time on Pikmin 3 again as it's been pushed back to release around E3 and maybe it is being tweaked to truly showcase some of the graphical/gameplay power of the Wii U. There's also probably going to be at least a teaser of the new 3D Mario or Mario Kart as well as the 3DS Zelda. But, outside of those relatively predictable first party showings, Nintendo definitely needs to emphasize some of its third party support (think games like Bayonetta 2) in order have a truly successful showing.

This is Nintendo though, so there's a chance they won't have much of a hardcore presence at E3 and instead focus on having their own press releases and Nintendo Directs, which may or may not be a mistake.

Top Bottom
