Protest against gay marriage: Huge crowds expected in Paris

I'm sure tons of French will roll their eyes at this. There is a large liberal streak there.

Meanwhile, in Canada... Ontario judge rules U.K. civil unions same as marriage

"Failing to recognize this U.K. civil partnership as a marriage would perpetuate impermissible discrimination, primarily because in the U.K. these parties could not marry because of their sexual orientation, but had to enter into a civil partnership instead," Justice Mesbur stated. "Their union is a lawful union under the laws of the U.K. Their union is of two persons, to the exclusion of all others. In the simplest terms it meets the statutory definition of marriage in Canada. Because these parties could not marry in the U.K., but had to enter into a civil partnership there instead, they have suffered discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation."

Canada remains fabulous!

Living in Massachusetts, I forget 'gay marriage' is illegal in some places in the world. Even the concept I have to prefix it with 'gay' feels a little strange. Seriously, this is not a big deal, Paris. If you can tolerate all those asshole American tourists every year, and I was one of them, you'll have no problem with two people of the same gender getting hitched.

You put up with that glass pyramid thing in front of the Louvre. There's no way your city is going to get more tacky because of this.

Most French people don't give much of a toss about gays and religion. Unfortunately the people who do are usually zealots (and rather loud ones at that), so they flock to each demonstration from every part of the nation, which makes them look much more numerous than thay are.

It's the same in Spain. The populacelargely favours lax abortion laws and is pretty much unconcerned about gay marriage, yet the nationalcatholic fringe rarely fail to make noise in the streets since they are more than willing to drive or be ferried out to the demonstrations.

it sounds like they're more anti gay adoption than anti gay marriage

From what I understand, that seems to be the bigger issue in Europe compare to gay marriage, while same-sex couples adopting has never really been something that ignites that passion that the gay marriage debate has in America. They're both cut from the same cloth (inherent homophobia) but it probably reflects more the differences in America and Europe in how that homophobia manifest itself in debating public policy.

Hollande's election was the boost the social conservatives needed. They were pretty silent before that.

It's quite surprising, we almost forgot we were a catholic country.

Oh well. Can't wait for the law to be voted, it's getting embarrassing.

And yet not a single explanation of how gay people can possibly destroy traditional marriage.

At all.

I think that they fear the possibility that their children might choose a same-sex partner. They don't want any reduction in the social pressures acting to prevent this, because even one's gay children ought to get traditional married and make biological grandchildren. Not so long ago, they usually would.

The National Front and ultracatholics parading with Muslims is also funny.

I don't give a fuck about those stupid protests, there wouldn't be any protests if it a law wasn't going to be voted by the majority government.
I'm more concerned by right wingers who said they'd cancel gay marriages once they're back in power.

I think it's lovely that so many people are taking a public stand for good morals as opposed to wasting their time doing charity work, promoting tolerance, or taking their kids to baseball games.

"What did you do today, Dad?"

"Well son, there are millions of people in the world who want to love each other, and I did my part to put a stop to that."

"That's swell. I'm proud of you Dad."

"I'm proud of you too son, unless you grow up to be a dirty queer."

The fuckers bring their kids to their hate parade, it's disgusting.

Edit:The most awkward thing I saw was on KTO( catholic cable channel) at my grandparent's during Christmas, a fucking ad with a priest urging families to pray because of Same sex marriage and adoption.

"We're all born of a man and a woman, but the law will say the opposite tomorrow," she said last week. "It will say a child is born of a man and a man."

What? In what universe is she living and how is she communicating with ours?

Someone should start a movement to have kids taken away from single parents, but I don't think the point would work on these people.

This has happened with some absolute tragic results before.

A US state even issued an apology over their state mandate for this not too long ago.

Fucking disgusting, but the law will probably pass anyway and then people will gradually accept it as always. I think Hollande should have started a bit slower though, start with marriage then talk about adoption and insemination later. The adoption/insemination part is the one that irks dumb people the most.

It's still sadly ironic that the only time different religions come together is to propagate intolerance and hatred though...

Next time a European expresses dismay about injustice in America...

Really? France equals Europe now?

Next time a European expresses dismay about injustice in America...

Er Marriage and adoption equality is being passed in France and some fuckheads with no power are against it, how is this an injustice?I hate the homophobic bastards but they have the right to protest, unfortunately.

An interesting aspect of protests like this is that they often serve to push people with moderate opinions towards the opposite extreme. Talking with some folks last week, they described themselves 10 years ago as seeing civil unions as a good solution to gays wanting marriage rights. Just make the civil unions more robust, take into account what legal advantages people want to see in them. Gays didn't need "marriage" as that was really for people starting families who wanted kids, and was very important to religion, etc.

But after a decade of watching people act like lunatics over the Gay Scare, the homosexual agenda, and creating panic over "saving" marriage, a lot of those people who had very middle-of-the-road views admitted their feelings have changed. Now it's "... fuck 'em. They wanted to make such a big deal about this and paint gay people as monsters. I'm sick of it and I'm heterosexual. Give marriage to everyone and make the fundies howl, they deserve it."

Everytime I hear about this kind of bullshit homophobia, it makes me wonder why people care about what gender other people happen to be fucking. They really can't mind their own fucking business?

Well, I guess the term "gay paris" is just fake.

Most of those people protesting aren't from Paris, Paris is where you go to organize big protests since it's the capital.

Unfortunately they're using the bullshit excuse "think of the children!"

I always love hearing people against gay marriage say things like 'A kid should have a mother and a father', like marriage has anything to do with that.

Sometimes I forget that some European countries have a good amount of religious ass hats as well. Can't all be as awesome as the Scandinavian countries I guess.

It's funny to see the right and the Church panic in the last few months because they realize the vast majority of the French are 100% behind gay marriage. Wrong side of history, my friends.

Be careful with what you say, it was not the Scandinavian countries that were first with same-sex marriage. That honor goes to the Netherlands (2001), Belgium (2003), Spain (2005).

All European countries have a fair amount of Religious people and like all groups they contain idiots, they are free to say silly things just like the majority is free to ignore them.

We even have Atheist Christians.

There will be a pro-gay marriage demonstration on the 27th. I will be there and there will be probably more people on the street than today. Sadly the media will probably make less media coverage. Those bigots are just a loud minority.

Well, there's a quota of married people in heaven, so obviously gay-people will steal heterosexual people's marriages.

You'll wake up one day and BAM! Your wife is now only your girlfriend.

And here I thought the actual important component of marriage was love, not who it takes place between.

Well, yes, in theory. But the higher you go up the "social ladder", the less it actually seems to matter. In this case, I think people just like to argue. Gay marriage doesn't actually affect anyone but the people involved in the marriage.

Belgian and wasn't expecting this at first. I do understand that gay adoption may rise concerns, even though i'm for it. But marriage, who gives a flying shit.

Some of the people interviewed in the newscasts make me sick. So much bigotry, and too often pointless hate.

In the end, the Chruch is going to have an awful lot to answer for. It seems they're beginning to realize that day is coming much sooner than they would've liked.

This is really the heart of the disagreement. SSM opponents believe that a marriage is necessarily a procreative union expected to provide children who are the biological descendants of the families of both partners. It's all about lineage and inheritance and creating social structures that persist in their attraction and accretion of wealth and power across generations. They say that affection between two people and their desire to form a household is not sufficient to make the relationship a marriage.

They're morons, of course, for not seeing that lineage isn't the only criterion for establishing familial legacies. It never has been, except in their fantasy of how the world was and ought to be. They're in for some bad disillusionment over the long term.

This gives a good idea of the protest today, "look for the error", the 800k number originated from the protest organizers, police estimated not even half.

That is still a damn lot of people.

Sure but the left was also a Catholic assembly and I'm confident they were the majority today, 1997 World Youth Day to see Pope John Paul (the previous one from Poland, much more liked than the current Pope). You should see a fairly big overlap because this is the official stance of the Vatican but to me it doesn't even look like 1/3rd showed up. In theory they should even be able to gather more people today because many non-Catholic Christians and Muslims also oppose gay marriage.

That.... looks like it has way less than 800K peope. Like, maybe a 1/10th of that even.

I thought it was for money and making the bonds between countries/families etc stronger ;).

Edit:nevermind read the wrong thing.

a child needs a father and a mother to develop properly
That's right single parents, your child is FUCKING BROKEN.

That third arm? That's because you don't have a partner. You brought it on yourself.

Get over it geeze it's 2013 lets accept rights instead of hiding behind a book apparently written by god 100s of years ago are we serious?

Paris elected an openly gay mayor twice in a row, can we please stop associating Paris with those protesters?
To be fair, when French people in general become enemies of liberty, it just feels so much more wrong than in other countries. People react with sweeping generalisations because it's truly depressing and disorientating.

Call me when they protest (le) divorce, among other "sins" these conservative hypocrites happily commit.

This is perfect.
Really.

Relativism is a bad companion, evilish I dare to say.
Or there is one and absolute truth you recognize and respect and follow in an absolute way always, or there is nothing that can stand against all the derivations that come from that way of thinking, everything can be allowed, nothing forbidden.

In Italy we have something that sound like that" Who sow wind will harvest storm"
