[Eurogamer\DF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation.

In previous generation CPU speed wasn't bottleneck because both consoles provided leaps and beyond better CPUs than PC market had at that time. Hell even today both proccesors aren't that bad.

And Ram was bottleneck of x360 and ps3 same as bath-wind. With use of better GFX and bigger ram pool you NEED better bath-wind.

That has hardly to with fanboyism

Mobile spell check is awesome comedy.

I thought rrp was still £250?

Anyway, no way in hell the PS4 is £299. Quote my post later and mock me of the impossible happens, but I just can't see it being the case. People are saying nothing in this is particularly expensive, but if you were to buy parts closest to these for a gaming pc, just think how much it would cost. Obviously they barely make any profit on these, sometimes even a loss, but my guess is still £350-£400. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

The economy is struggling at the moment, especially gaming side, so it'd certainly be hugely beneficial for them to keep the price lower. £425 like the PS3 would be suicide. I think past £350 they're cutting away a huge portion of their buyers, even past £300 really. But due to early adopters and new tech, I don't see £299 being realistic.

I don't know what the 500GB is but no one is selling it for £250 anyway, plus as has been said we'll probably see another price drop on it by the time PS4 launches.

The thing about buying the parts is Sony will get probably massively discounted rates that will be a lot less than anything on consumer shelves as they'll be in such large quantities for a start.

They'll probably do two SKUs again, I could see maybe a £279 base model and a £329 top one, there is no way I can see them going past £350 though.

Monsters?
Anyway, Orbis wins unless Durango has an entire sleeve out of sight.
On the memory front at least I'd say Orbis is the outright winner. Sounds far better and really good balance. Durango sounds like a tradeoff for more RAM over faster RAM because of the size of the OS.

Will probably start to affect stuff mid gen onwards.

I really doubt MS is only going with ddr3.
It wouldn't make sense to licence a Ferrari engine and then feed it water, it doesn't make sense to include an amd hd78xx and have it run off ddr3 only.
Whatever solution engineers thought of, it must be effective; these guys surely know what they're doing.

I really wish Sony would hurry with the design and specs. If they are more powerful than nextbox and will have BC then I would start buying my multi-plats on PS3 only. If they will be more powerful then I will be PS4 only next gen.

Wasn't a problem with the 360 and it's 512 MB of total RAM ..

This industry has changed. Look at how much they WANT to do with current consoles but can't when it comes to services. 0.5gb pretty much screws you up after two or three years.

That's hot.
I would like the next gen consoles to look sleek and expensive, as opposed to being made of cheap plastic.

What I liked about the original 'Playstation 3' was the fact it looked like an expensive piece of hardware.

Something akin to that bluray player would be fantastic.

PS4 obviously.

Wait.. what is this twist?

Karak and MisterCTeam on suicide watch?

I know Karak and he's level headed guy. I couldn't tell if he's playing for a team.

Okay, so Orbis will have 1 gig less RAM for gaming than Durango, but Orbis has a way better type of RAM than Durango.

So...which ones wins on the memory front?

No it's a gap of around 1.5GB (which is pretty large) when it comes to availability for game developers. And people are just speculating about XB3's OS size. May be it's less than 3GB in which case the gap will be even larger. Still, fast vs slow ram consideration would have to be taken in to consideration.

I hope they go a different default color than black this time, PS2 and PS3 were black and look great.

But i hope we get the grey color of the PSX back and the blazing intro to PS1 redone:

Those 16 seconds will tingle your nostalgia jimmies if you gamed in the mid-late 90's.

Sony has always almost had sexy sleek designs of their consoles, PSone looked a bit cheap and the newest PS3 Slim is not that hot looking but the first default console of PS1, PS2 and PS3 all look fantastic.

Ok, WOW.

Probably the best design ever.
I wouldn't mind such design. Anything not too "gamey" would be fine.

With the knowledge that PS4 games are well on there way to being completed, I hope we get a demo disc like we did with PS1.

When I bought my PS1 on launch day that's all I had to play for the first few hours I had it.

I played the Toshinden, Wipeout, and Jumping Flash demos over and over. I also won't ever forget the Philosoma trailer. It's etched in my brain.

By the end of the day I convinced my mom to get me some actual games though.

Nah, but hopefully you'll be able to download demos.

Something I just thought of, with games growing in size I hope devs are not forcing us to download 3/4 gigs demos.

I don't know. Their certainly competent but if there is a big OS then they needed that RAM for those functions, so they got 8GB. Theres a trade off.

Doing more starts raising costs. Sony have optimized for a games console and have great specs. MS have optimised for...something.

Typical parents! Buy a new console with no games. My parents did the same with me and my brothers when I was 7 or 8. Luckily it a was Vic 20 with pack-in games.....but they didn't realise that.

Btw, are Sony and MS going to be loss leading for at least the first year with their next gen system?
Probably but not nearly as big as before. Honestly if these specs for Orbis are true and the controller isn't crazy then $399 launch price would be reasonable. Durango may be a bit more if Kinect 2.0 is bundled.

EDIT: Just saw that blu ray player and Proelite's comments on the last page. Hhhhhnnnnngggg

Well I bought the console myself, but it's all I had money for.

It took those hours of begging and pleading to get them to foot the dough for some games.

Proelite, where did that come from all of a sudden? Not that we weren't saying it all along, but yeah...

I guess that the new rumor mill starts running again tomorrow, huh? Should be fun. :)

As gorgeous as that BD player is, Playstation's design language right now centers around marrying straight lines with curves. So I don't think you'd see something so absent of curves...unless they reboot that, and go back to something like PS2's design.

They should go with a retro design, a tribute to PSX.

I believe next week could prove itself to be filled to the brim with rumors. Microsoft has got the Microsoft Hardware Open House & Networking Event and Fiscal Year 2013 Second Quarter Earnings Conference Call on Thursday. AMD has got its Q4 2012 Earnings Conference Call on Tuesday. I wouldn't call for any greater announcement coming from any of these events but I think the frequency of rumors will become greater due to them.

Honestly I could see them doing that. I dont think itll look anything like that BD player but going back to a sleek high end AV equipment design would be perfect IMO.

No thanks.

The design was ok in the 90's with the grey console and pastel button symbols, but it doesn't really jive with design philosophies of today.

I don't want my console to look like a toy.
Im not sure but he may have been referring to this, and not ps1..

Curves and straight lines is PS3 language.

PS4 gets its own.

People love to play/spoil the hype whether it is true or not.
