[Eurogamer\DF] Orbis Unmasked: what to expect from the next-gen PlayStation.

I doubt they won't call it PS4. Europea and U.S are the biggest markets, and I don't know if a name change will hurt them more in these locations than in Asia by keeping the 4.

Obviously, I think with good marketing all you need is for Playstation to be in the name. Orbis actually sounds pretty cool.

Guys.

The Playstation.

Thats it.

Talking about optimisation in a closed-boxed systems gets a lot of people butthurt these days.

I was using my 360 this weekend and it took it over a minute just to boot the menus. There is a big footprint in modern console OSes. And it sounds like Durango is basically using Win 8 and PS4 is using Linux both with off the shelf PC parts.

That's an easy way to confuse the more casual consumer. Kid's mom goes into a store asking for the playstation and may not know which one to get as that can refer to either. May go with the cheaper route. Sony definitely doesn't need to make the same mistake Nintendo did.

I would hope they learned from nintendo with naming. If it has a fancy new touch screen controller with non ps4 name I could see the same confusion with the casuals as we seen with the wii U.

So... What's the early consensus?
Who should shut up and take my money? (graphics whore here)

Honestly? A modern PC with an IVY bridge processor and a 7950 will run circles around these rumored specs for around $550-$600. If you are a graphics whore, build a PC to hook up to your TV with a 360 controller and Steam Big Picture mode.

That and the fact that the OS is far more complex both out and in games and yet it has remained within the original 32mb allocated. I still find it mind-boggling that 3gb would be dedicated to the OS in a console. 3gb on a PC can run Windows 7 and play games comfortably...

No one answered my question a few pages back(or 10). Isnt the Jaguar core thats rumored to be in the 720/PS4 still an unreleased 2013 version that supposed to be substantively updated? How do we know that its 12.8 gflops per core or whatever at this point is accurate?

Well it males since given that it seems Durango is basically running Win 8.

I'm guessing that whoever is making numerical calculations is assuming that the flops remain more or less the same.

The specs for jaguar core is finalized, the theoretical compute performance can be calculated. Nothing ever reach the theoretical peak performance.

The total number doesn't really matter. Just know each of these cores run about as well as single core 2 duo core at the same frequency.

spend $300 on 7950 and then $250 on rest of the box? How?

It has pretty much been the case in AMD's recent history. It would be shocking if suddenly they had a huge tech leap ahead. I guess it is possible, but they have made more headway on power consumption than on raw power in recent history and they were probably chosen by MS and Sony because of low power and cost rather than a radical leap in computational power.

my only fear is, what if MS updates nextbox a few years down the road (or sooner) and instead of 3GB for OS, it will take only 1GB. In that case nextbox has much more ram even if slower.

EDIT: guys drop the "shi" part.

the bobcat>jaguar update was more to do with evolving the process to pile more cores on a chip. there is a possible 10% clock increase on the fastest bobcat core (1.8ghz), but the present rumours suggest the console version will be conservatively clocked at 1.6ghz.

steamroller cores are supposed to be the big performance leap.

Yes, because that will let me play all my favourite games. You know, like games from Japan and console exclusives, which make up a good 75%+ of my gaming.

I couldn't give a shit if a mid to high end PC can make games like Far Cry 3 or Skyrim look an order or magnitude better than the PS3, as I rarely play those sort of games. If it let me play Vanquish etc in 1080p/60, then you might make me sit up and take note.

Steam has its place, but the idea that it makes consoles irrelevant is just as laughable now as it's always been. If / when Steam has the same selection of games I can enjoy on my consoles, and not just predominantly western multi platform games, then you'll have a point.

Huh? SSDs use the same NAND storage as flash drives. They are the same thing.
I was going to answer, but my good man Brad answered it for me. It's almost the same tech, but the dedicated controller really speeds things up. It's like first gen SSD's vs current gen ones. EXACT same technology, but the controllers really are a game changer.

Much of the SSD's speed comes from the controller hardware used to spread read and write commands across many individual NAND flash chips.

Nope I only know that it's rumored to be there for OS patches but 16GB seems like a lot for it to be there for the OS / FW Updates , just like 4GB seems pretty big for the PS Vita OS.

Maybe they are split between "os" and game usage? 8 gigs would be PLENTY for OS storage. GDDR5 accessing it would allow quick switching of apps, or maybe the OS in its entirety is loaded on there, and not the HDD so we don't get those 'loading symbols' that we do when we hit the PS button during game. The other 8 would be perfect for data caching. You can do full stage (or redundant information) data calls to cache the whole thing (relatively quickly) so the GDDR5 isn't bogged down by either optical or hdd.

You know... considering that they called the PSP2 PS Vita they may actually call the ps4 Death (Vita in more than one languages means life)
Maybe PS Morte

Any bottlenecks with this setup?

Not really. The RAM is biggest factor at only 4GB. But, you could always upgrade RAM later and toss another 4GB for another $20, but 4GB runs most modern PC games perfectly fine. My current set up with a 7960 only has 4GB and I have no problem running everything at near max settings including Far Cry 3. At the very least this set up would probably out perform what these current console specs are rumored but you have a system that is more upgradable in the future.

What about the Mouse+Keyboad+Gamepad?

I'm assuming most people have a keyboard and mouse lying around somewheres. But you can also use 360 or PS3 gamepads on PC relatively easily. I consider those kinds of accessories to be the same thing you'd face with a new console with buying battery packs, and extra controllers, online fees, HDMI cables, etc.

You would have to add costs for a copy of Windows 7 or 8 but if you already own a copy on an old PC or laptop/netbook you could just use jellybean to get the serial key and do a fresh install. Win 8 is also pretty cheap right now, especially if you are a student.

I don't think it'll be called PS4 but I don't know what it could be. It HAS to keep the PlayStation part of the name but a bit of a revitalized branding could be cool and help their image a bit.

Radeon 7950 $279
Intel i5 3470 processor $150
Gigabyte 1155 motherboard $39
Samsung DDR3 4GB RAM $22
Antec Basiq 450w power supply $39
MSI Case $20
320gb WD Caviar BlueHarddrive $45

Total: $595

And that is not shopping around and going with what I could find in 10 of browsing and with all very good, reliable parts. There is room for skimping.

If anything this is great advertising for the PS4. Get similar quality versions of this list, in a better package, with a better design, better materials, better cooling, closed platform, much cheaper and with far greater gaming performance (as a result of better engineering and closed platform). Speaking purely from a gaming perspective.

Still no where near $550.00

Pfft, don't need that for games. =P

Oh wait. =/

Well to be fair, if Gabe Newell has his way, you won't pretty shortly. And with PS4 rummored to Linux based, throwing a free copy of Unbuntu on there seems like it could become a real viable option in the near future.

But regardless, is there anybody who doesn't have a copy of Windows lying around on some machine that they could just grab the key from at this point?

Honestly, it isn't too expensive.

I doubt that honestly.

What would a PC with 512MB RAM do for you with current gen games? Not to mention another $200-300 for Windows and various accessories, and no first party games.
