Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance demo is up on Xbox Live and PSN US. PSN EU whenever.

Getting to the final boss without parrying is pretty hard. Note: I did not see the parry prompt until the final boss.

Yeah it seems like people are going a million miles a minute at this thing and then getting mad at the game.

Take it slow. Chill on the beach and press some buttons. You can figure out so much about the moveset and the game with that alone. (Only thing I didn't figure out on my own were the delay chains and back forth motion specials)

Read the prompts and watch the visual cues from enemies.

Game really tells you alot if you're paying attention I think.

Anybody know if this demo fixed the glitch where you free going into blade mode against the gekkos?

It did

Going to check to see if they caught other glitches as well. (People broke the shit out of the ZoE demo version)

I went into blade mode several times against the Gekkos and had no crash.

I was on that beach for about 5-10 minutes trying to slice up everything (damn cat)

I went thru the codec conversations, items and just experimented with the buttons before I finally tackled the game

Well.

This game is much less intuitive than I was expecting. Different moves don't really ease into one another. Doing forward-forward to initiate a juggle is much worse than doing it for a stinger in DmC. :P I can see why several people have complained about the difficulty, the controls are kind of weird feeling, maybe it's something you get used to. Parrying, btw, is ridiculously easy. You got a huge window, beat the dog in my first try. After hyping up myself so much I'm not feeling it at the moment. The camera is also kinda terrible and got fudged up on me a coupe of times.

The graphics really surprised me though, it looks really nice, much better than pictures show. I didn't notice the drops to sub-HD, if there were any. Framerate drops when you enter blade mode but that's all right. Outside of that you're definitely feeling dat 60fps.

I'm gonna have to play this one more. Too bad you can't unlock hard mode.

The difficulty is gonna drive a lot of people away.
It's better than I expected, and I was expecting a lot.

Yeah, this. Actually seeing it in motion on my TV, it looks a lot nicer than any of the media shown so far, especially still screens. Except the dithering. Japanese developers and their boners for dithering *shrug*.

It also drops, like, a bunch of other special effects. Hello, Raiden stealth camo hair. :(

Luckily you get rewarded with a counter attack if you do it properly!
It's not really. Like if you do it slow it "parries" but it doesn't parry properly.
I didn't even realize you could use parry as a block before reading what InfiniteNine said. I thought parries in this game always automatically countered... I must've been slashing nonstop and not really paying attention. Thanks, haha.

The only thing that bums me out are the prerendered cut-scenes. Switching to a 30fps video is jarring.

If you kill everyone in the first stealthy bit without being seen you can save the civilian. Doesn't appear to do anything tho :D

It gives you the "No Kill" bonus which is more or less an instant S rank

and I believe there is an achievement/trophy for saving all of them in the game

This. You aren't supposed to be going into blade mode at random to mash out attacks. There are very specific slow motion moments where the game gives you a nudge if you want to use blade mode and Raiden will be placed exactly where you need to be. I have a hard time understanding how people find it disorienting.

And once you get into Blade Mode, get off the left stick unless you need to adjust your aim. That's why some of you find your aim drifting up/downwards.

Yup. There was one where you swing between the gekko's legs and you get a chance to slice it in half while you're upside down. That's...pretty great.

Though I understand on it might feel strange for some considering you're likely to be pushing the left stick in a direction as you enter blade mode.

I saved him while being seen.

Same here. The first time, he got shot, I killed everyone before he hit the ground and I ran up to him as he fell over :( The second time, I managed to float both of the guys next to him and slice them without hitting the hostage.

Do you automatically collect/crush multiple spines at once, just only with the animation for one spine? Or can you only get one at a time, even if you slice multiple guys at the designated spot?

Worse as in a weird input or worse as in more difficult? If it's the latter, Lock-On helps a lot.

I think you're doing it wrong if you're going into blade mode with no lead in attack.

Game has so many attacks that lead into blade mode follow ups that perfectly align you with enemies in cutting position that it really makes no sense to just do it by itself. Unless you're cutting projectiles or something

but even then it's just something you adapt to really.

I'm not going into it at random moments. A few times I had a couple enemies vulnerable and attempted to both of them in blade mode, how they were in different positions and postures, which made the turning and adjusting awkward.

Also, going into blade mode from stealth kills are awkward as well. The game takes a cinematic angle when doing the stealth kill and switching into blade mode during that maintains that cinematic approach. However, since it's in a fixed angle, it conflicts with aiming of blade mode and makes the adjustment much more difficult because you're locked in a specific angle.

Does that make sense?

This really should have had a better tutorial. Even after seeing that moveset youtube video, I don't get the combat system, if there is something to get beyond from what I have gathered. Are your combos just mashy mash mash? Does button timing matter at all? I really just mashed my way through the demo and it seemed that was good enough, while blade moding, parrying and doing the X/O finishers of course.

Worse as in a weird input or worse as in more difficult? If it's the latter, Lock-On helps a lot.

Move input in this game seems weird to me. Doesn't feel as right as DMC or Ninja Gaiden. There's a heavy feel to everything you do, maybe on purpose I guess.

JESUS. Why was combat never explained to me? I got by the first but by running around slashing dudes but I cannot for the life of me defeat this god damn final boss. I don't understand the "parry" system at all, and am always getting destroyed by his attacks with no idea how to defend myself.

I want to like the game, because the little bits when it comes together are damn amazing. But MGS demo, you need to teach me how to play the game past simple slicing.

It's nice to see ninja run working on ducking/crouched enemies, but it's no substitute for Wind Path or whatever jumping on heads is called in NG games.

Wasn't there also a trailer with Raiden running along a wall? Is that an upgrade?

Holy crap. This game. This game. It makes you feel like a cyborg ninja. This is going to be a great series by Platinum and KojiPro.

whenever you see orange on the enemy, parry when they strike

you can spam the parry, but if you parry at the right moment you will automatically counter

Watch for the orange flashes from enemies; that means an attack is coming. When that happens press the direction towards the enemy + light attack. If you time it right, you'll parry the incoming attack. If you're too early, it'll function as a block. It's super forgiving and really simple.

When an enemy turns orange, press the stick in his direction plus light attack. You'll defend. If you time it exactly you'll parry and the enemy will be left staggered.

The moment I've been thrown out that plane, landed on the ground and been able to move the camera at 60 fps, you should have seen that smile on my face... Once you know how to parry properly, this game is so entertaining !
The only downside is that it's pretty short for a 3.5 GB demo.

I just love to parry against the first boss and then press forward forward triangle... :D

The model detail on Raiden on top of 60fps makes this a pretty good-looking game. Watching the goons climb over the wall and slowly fan out felt very Metal Gear for some reason, even though they got slide-datsued half a second later and I got the Powerade in their spines.

I think I'm going to have to reverse the analog sticks for blade mode in the retail version, if I can. It's too disorientating to do a move with a directional input like the palm or the stinger and then have raiden be completely off-axis during blade mode because I didn't let go of the left analog. Maybe I just gotta train for better thumb discipline.

.

There are certain delay chains. (Square *delay* Triangle square is a trip and slam chain)

I don't remember them all. try a bunch of different combinations. Delay timing is similar to other Platinum games with the same type of inputs if that makes sense

It's not a combo game though if that's what you're looking for

I really just mashed my way through the demo and it seemed that was good enough, while blade moding, parrying and doing the X/O finishers of course.

Welcome to action game demos

Welcome to DmC demo 2 months ago even

More than likely. I haven't played DmC outside the demo, but to me the attacks in that game felt like the exact opposite of what you're saying about MGR; which was kinda off putting.

wow. it took me a few deaths to get used to the parry system, but all in all great demo! The graphics are a lot better then I elected. definitely preordering this at best buy. old their $20 preorder credit makes it a steal!

I hope it is a upgrade. We haven't seen it been used ever since that old trailer of him doing it. But I'm getting the feeling it was taking out =/.

My experience with the demo was... sloppy. I need to figure out how to play the game. Other than that, it seemed fun, but really generic which is very much in-line with everything I've seen about the game up to this point. I'm really not fond of the universe here-- the new characters are incredibly bland as are the environments, but I've preached that before.

The gameplay and hopefully the bosses and some later levels could save it. I didn't dislike the demo, but I felt the presentation was really clumsy and kind of left you directionless. Blade mode is crap to me and really puts the spotlight on why Kojima Productions couldn't really figure it out; it's a flawed concept that I don't think adds much to the game, if anything.

These are early impressions though based on a demo, and a demo that doesn't tell you how to play the game or how the combat mechanics work. I'm definitely looking forward to getting the game, but I'm really hoping it gets better.

I feel like the more I get used to the game, especially parrying, the more I'll enjoy it. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but the tutorial could have covered a lot more than it did.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was taken out. Especially with combat areas mostly orange walling you off from alot of the environment's edges

Oh well. :/

Gotta believe in Itagaki bringing back that real Ninja shit in Devil's Third!
