Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

I've been in a real shmup mood recently since buying Akai Katana and DoDonPachi: Ressurection with the last of my Christmas money.

Can anyone recommend any more good ones for me to get sucked into? (360, UK). So far I have the following:

Akai Katana
DoDonPachi: Ressurection
Deathsmiles
Trouble Witches Neo!
Ikaruga
Triggerheart Excelica

I've downloaded a few demo's to play through too, but haven't had a chance to fire them up yet, and probably won't be able to till next week sometime (hence posting here for advice):

Strania
Guwange
Sine Mora
KoF: Sky Stage
Radiant Silvergun

I have approx 2000 msp on my account to spend, but may try picking up more as required.

I understand Sine Mora has Stereo 3D support (if so, AWESOME, more need this!!!) but I've read mixed things about the validity of Arcade Stick play, so I'm not sure.

Indie games is also a possibility, although I've not really looked at them too much.

Strania is my favorite shooter in that list. Buy Strainia, then buy the DLC to play enemies' POV. It's a whole new game.

Guwange is good, but it's honestly my least favorite Cave shooter. It's not bad in any sense - its just as good as Futari, Ibara, MMP, etc.

KOF is actually a fun shooter - doesn't seem to get a lot of love though. :-/

Sine Mora - yeah, it's a love it or hate it type of shooter. I tried to liked it at first, but now I just except that I hate it.

Radiant Silvergun - a classic, though after playing it again, I don't think it holds up. I won't say its bad because, at the time, it was one of my favorite shooters on the Saturn.

Don't forget the recently released Under Defeat - cant praise that game enough. If you want something different, check it out. It has a bit of a learning curve, but once you "get it", you'll love it.

Check out what I just picked up today for $9 new at a local Ollies retailer.

Hard to come by these lately. Awesome game! Ive been a fan for awhile and hoped to run into a good copy. Missile fury was a beast and I wanted to play spirits. They also had Otomedius Excellent for $14 but thats not much of a deal considering you can get the special edition for that lately.

I'll take this with me to work for my breaks tomorrow :)

Wow! O_O - nice pick up.

Thanks! Im pretty proud of this find too. It came out in 2008 and it was pretty hard to find back then. It goes for up to $40+ these days and good luck finding one mint. Missile fury was BALLS HARD and this game has 160 levels plus level creation/sharing. It plays different than missile fury and should prove a really good break from Nanostray on my work breaks for the DSi. Bangai O at work sounds pretty awesome tomorrow.

Were there any good shmups besides Gradius collection on the PSP? It'd be nice to have stuff for it besides Kamen Rider to bust out on the go.

EDIT: Oh my God I can't stop laughing right now! This game is like the Hotline Miami of shmup challenges. Each stage is a different kind of hurtle and combining attack types to generate shields that bounce or shoot missiles is incredible, but OH MY GOD that laughter when you lose XD

Every other moment as you figure out a stage and fail you hear this over the top evil laughter and its like the spirit of the developer rising forth to greet you with its evil joy. So addictive. Get this if you can find it folks. So good.

Is Bangai-O DS really that hard to find now? I recall seeing plenty of copies at Target a couple of years back for $15. I suppose I wouldn't really be surprised, though.

$7, fufilled (but not sold by) Amazon.

Edit: Nevermind, didn't read the top of the page. So probably not super hard to find yet, but out of the major channels?

I've seen used Bangai-O copies around. Bought it for $5 recently.

Really? Huh...last google shopping search I did had copies in the $40's. Its definitely out of my local channels though. Im in WV and all I got are the really tiny Gamestops and such here. Great grab though at the price I got it for considering I didn't have to pay shipping or anything. I really love the evil laugh every time you lose or win. I should probably finally breakdown and take on tutorial mode though. I ran into targets that dont shoot, but reflect my crap back at me and I can't figure out how to snuff them out. Maybe the sword or the breaker tools or something.

Anyhow I gotta say this game should be on Steam. With the love Super Meat Boy and stuff got I could see this game being available for PC as the kind of challenge folks would enjoy if they wanted to experience the shmup equivalent of a game with lots of self contained levels loaded with insane challenge and panic inducing hazards.

OK, shmup GAF, I have the opportunity to buy Radiant Silvergun. I need some advice though. I can't stand RS's spiritual successor, Ikaruga. I understand that RS is a bit more complex than that, but I'm still not sure if I would like it. My favorite shmup is probably Soukyugurentai and I normally lean more toward the traditional style of spaceship shooter rather than the newer danmaku.

Should I just forget about Radiant Silvergun and pick up a few moderately priced shmups in its place?

Do you have a 360? If so, might be a good way to get a taste to see if you like it by downloading the inexpensive port.

Personally, I find both games overly complex and tend not to play them (or at least invest the time).

Unless you're a Saturn collector you should probably go with the 360 port. At least try the demo out there. RS feels like Ikaruga with an added layer of weapon leveling and such. I'm not a big fan, and much prefer Souky.

Huh, I'm surprised you think of Ikaruga as complex. The simplicity was what always appealed to me - no bombs, no weapon upgrades, no options.

Ikaruga's complexity is that it plays more like a puzzle game than a shmup in what you have to do with the color-changing and chaining for maximum score.

MOSS is developing a "gothic horror" STG titled Caladrius for 360. Siliconera article.

Fuck-all sign of it on MOSS's website but there's already a limited edition listed on amiami, lol.

...I guess this is worth noting only because I think Raiden IV is pretty solid and am disappointed that instead of a V we're getting a game where two of the selling points are "fully voice acted" and "punish sexy bosses". Maybe it'll still be decent, though!

2013 is shaping up quite nice.

I agree, Raiden IV is quite solid...put in in about two weeks ago and was surprised (very challenging, though!).

Lineup:

Grev mech game (out now!)
Ginga Force (Feb 14)
Cave Box (March?)
Caladrius (April)
SDOJ (May 30!)

Think that take us to 40 or 41 shmup titles for 360.

Seen this earlier, talk about out of the blue! Still, looks like something I'll buy. Although having Ginga Force and Saidaioujou at both ends of it coming out will be expensive...

Sounds interesting, I'll check it out. Not exactly thrilled about the vertical scrolling on a horizontally oriented display (not to mention the 4:3 display area on a 16:9 monitor). On the other hand, I like MOSS' new logo.

MOSS? Still pissed at no Raiden IV for PAL.
At least for Raiden Fighter Aces on the end I've got the DotEmu release for my iPad+iCade (although I'd still buy an X360 PAL release, since I only buy shmups and Live Arcade games anymore on 360).
I dread for the day my xbox will broke

I'm liking it so far. Looks like vertical Deathsmiles. Character designs look nice, and the levels look more polished than the uninspired crap we got in Raiden III and IV. Looks like MOSS is stepping up their game.

Moss has a fucking lot of work to do to fix their rep after KoF Sky Stage.

This is very true.

Ok, so reading more on the Caladrius article, not a ton of details, just says that it's a gothic horror shooter with:

◇An "Element Shot" system which you can level up strategically
◇Discover their true form! "Shyness break!" (Probably some sort of pervy undressing system)
◇In-game voices by a bunch of different voice actors/actresses

Screens make it almost look like a multi-player shooter.

Says it includes the following modes:

・Boss Rush Mode
・Score Attack Mode
・World Ranking

Also interesting here that it says "World"...possible localization/region-free release...?

Amiami is also listing a standard for 5910 yen.

I'm in for the LE since I blind buy those for the 360 shoot-em-ups. Does seem like kinda a crummy release sandwiched in between Ginga and SDOJ.

Also, seems like it is too story heavy. Do people really even like that in these types of games? Even a game like DS has a bit too much story for comfort.

I kinda like the ridiculous story in DS, Jamestown and Trouble Witches, Some flavor is nice to establish whats going on.

That looks gorgeous. I can't wait to hear more. Hope it comes to the west. Apparently its being made by the Raiden IV guys.

Yeah. And the way I hear it is that MOSS themselves were started up by the original Raiden buys who bailed from Seibu Kaihatsu after that company decided to stop making games (and became a front for the yakuza?). They haven't produced anything in over a decade, yet they're still in business.

Oh for fuck's sake...

I just won 2 auctions on Ebay. Radiant Silvergun and Hyper Duel.

Three hundred American dollars for both. My wallet is pissed off and won't talk to me anymore.

Goddamn. I guess if you're going to win, win big.

Edit: Oh and congratulations on both! Welcome to the Hyper Duel club.

-Strikers 1945 (2) (PS1)
-RayStorm (PS1)
-RayCrisis (PS1)
-Thunder Force V PS (PS1)
-G Darius (PS1)
-Darius Gaiden (JPN Sat)
-BatsuGun (JPN Sat)
-Soukiugurentai (JPN Sat)
-In the Hunt (JPN Sat)
-Metal Black (JPN Sat)
-Layer Section (JPN Sat)
-Layer Section II (JPN Sat)
-Donpachi (JPN Sat)
-Thunder Force V (JPN Sat)
-Metal Slug X (PS1)
-Silhouette Mirage (JPN Sat)
-Einhander (PS1)
-R-Type Final (PS2)

And this is excluding the other thousand dollars of games not related to shumps at all.

I feel like I'm done for a while...lol

Nice haul!

I'm having a similar (albeit not as extreme) shmup month. I picked up Mars Matrix, Giga Wing 2, Thunder Force Gold Vol 2 (Saturn), and DoDonPachi (Saturn) over the last week and a half.

It was my intention all along. I was selling the old resurfaced DoDonpachi so that I could buy one in better shape. Glad I did. The DoDonPachi I purchased as a replacement is like new.

Eventually I will do the same for my Soukyugurentai. eBay seller screwed me over and sent me a Souky Oto with holes in the data layer a couple of years ago.

Here's a question. Which is considered the better version of Sokyugurentai, the original or Otokuyo? I've heard that if you have Oto, you can use an Action Replay to play it in full English, since it has the original translated Terra Diver code on the disc, where the original crashes if you try. There are probably other bug fixes in there as well.

Nice!

I'm going thru the same thing this year - just picked up Dimahoo and 19XX arcade boards, and preordered a bunch a new shooters: Ginga Force, Neo XYX, and Sturmwind.

I really want Hyper Duel for my Saturn...

Well, Souky is a quirky one. There was a discussion about some of its oddities earlier in the Sega Saturn appreciation thread.

The story goes:

Soukyugurentai for the Saturn was basically a direct port of the Titan board version. The game was released in the East as "Soukyugurentai" and in the West as "Terra Diver". As the Saturn and Titan/ST-V are basically the same hardware, the Saturn port tries to follow region instructions from the system the game is played on.

Playing the game on a US Saturn (without a region modification) results in the game using some left-on-the-disc data from the Terra Diver rom. This causes all sorts of problems. Some screens will represent the game as Terra Diver while others will say Soukyugurentai. Some of intro and exit stage text is jumbled as the game tries to use assets from the Terra Diver that don't exist on the game disc. It also renders the score attack mode useless. The screen is filled with a dot pattern, laid over the play space.

Normally this wouldn't be an issue, as the game was intended for play on Japanese region Saturns.

With the Soukyugurentai Otokuyo, it appears that all references to Terra Diver assets are gone. So no, the game does not appear as Terra Diver when played on a Western region Saturn using an Action Replay. It is entirely in Japanese without any graphical glitching. A demo of Battle Garegga is also included on the disc. Otherwise, there are no changes to the gameplay and it's identical to the original Soukyugurentai release.

But here's where things get a little weird. It's unconfirmed, but Soukyugurentai appears to be easier when played on a US region Saturn. I have a theory that difficulty was partially determined by region and that Terra Diver was toned down for the Western audience. What is even more interesting is that Otokuyo is affected by this as well. Though the Western assets have been removed, region still seems to affect Otokuyo's difficulty.

To to answer your question: The Otokuyo release is more playable worldwide due to the removal of Terra Diver assets. If you want the real experience and true difficulty, play Souky on a JP region Saturn.

I've been waiting for weeks for my copy of Soukyugurentai to arrive from Japan... I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone.

Thanks for the clarification. For some reason I've had it in my head that the Otokuyo release was "better" than my original version. I wonder if I can mess with the Terra Diver code if I pop the disc into my JP Saturn with a region bypass cart inserted. Hmm...
