Asahi: PlayStation 4 to be over 40,000 yen

Things are always cheaper in the U.S. compared to Japan. So I'm expecting $399 to $449 at most. (for just the console and accessories).

The only price point I'm certain it won't be is $599. Too much negative stigma behind that number. $449 for basic, $499 for deluxe sounds right in the US

i think $399.99 is too expensive, but $449.99 and $499.99 would be suicide. they would need to communicate that people are getting way more than a games console before they drop over half a grand on the thing.

no, that is not my assumption. my assumption is that tablets and smartphones exist in a category in priority - hence my "required to own" comment - to expenses like consoles. they're completely different, more optional, experiences to the average consumer.

Of course smartphones are going to be higher on anyone's priority list. It's a phone you use daily and almost constantly. Console buying is pretty much a once a decade-type expense compared to tablet or smartphone buying which is yearly. There is a higher number allowed for this. It's a completely invalid analysis to say that consumers have this magical budget that they won't modify for something like consoles that they don't buy very often. Are there going to be people that get a smartphone over a console? Sure, but something similar could have been said when the 360 was launched.

i wonder if it doesn't perform well at $399.99 that people will start complaining it was too expensive the whole time, much like the vita's $249.99 reveal.
the reason people complaint at the vita is because a system without a good library is expensive even at 100 dollars, even sony has stated that third parties are not supporting the vita, i bought one at 250 and i don't regret it, its a great piece of hardware for its price but the lack of new games or even new announcements does makes the price a mind barrier for many people

Microsoft would eat their lunch at that price. They own north america right now and a $499 price tag will just make it worse.

The PS3 built up a decent library, but no one cared until it hit 299. I have no doubt both Sony and MS could both do well at 399 at launch. It's post launch that I question.

Pretty much this + crazy memory prices.

I belive it will be $400/£350/400€. Possibly less if they introduce model with 16-32GB flash memory [small chance].

Here in Serbia... I expect 500€. :(

Sounds like it'll be dead on arrival in Japan at that price

Yeah that would be really bad, especially if you assume Wii U will have a decent lineup and possibly a price drop by then. Hell even if they don't 3DS is enough competition.

GBP is too weak to support £299. GBPJPY needs to hit around 170 if we are going to get a £299 price point. I don't see it, the pound has been taking hits all the way since December and there has been a semi-official campaign from the BoE to keep the pound weak in order to support UK industry vs Germany. If anything we're heading for parity with the Euro again at this rate.

That's a sad reality. What I meant, though, was I'd want to pay £299 for it maximum. Meaning, if I can trade in my PS3 (provided the system has some non-cloud BC) and only have £299 leave my bank account for the console, I'm happy.

The actual RRP I expect is somewhere between £340 and £400. I'm obviously hoping as low as possible.

So you guys think $400 is low-tier/mid-tier? It can't be high, right?

I think it's Mid-teir, the spot where ti's not super cheap so you think it's poorly made etc. but not to high that someone who likes PlayStation but isn't a big gamer who follows all the news would go out and get.

Sony making all the right moves lately, I swear. Powerhouse system at a truly viable price.

Damn, Microsoft. You're in trouble this time sorry.

I say $399 in the US.

Will not pay $400 or higher for consoles anymore. $350 is my limit.

PS4 would have to have some pretty amazing launch games for me to buy it at launch.

Yeah, 400 dollars is the sweet spot but I would be willing to go up to 500 (with extras) considering that this upcoming console generation might be around for 7-8 years.

Are HDD prices still inflated above pre-Thailand flood levels?

No, they have returned to pre-flood pricing.

I would be surprised with a single SKU. I think a 500GB one and a 32GB flash one for $50 less would work (that would be around the cost saving as well, passing directly to the consumer).

This is reminding me a lot of the Vita reveal, except even worse because neither of the two have been revealed yet, this price is just speculation, and not one single game has been shown.

IF they launch at the same price as MS they kinda win because of free online.
Sony have the upper hand in this respect.

Anything above 399 in the US is a mistake. Anything above that is going to get rounded to 500 in the general consumers mindset.

If sony does price that high it's going to help Nintendo and MS quite abit. My gut tells me MS is aiming at 349 or 399 max. They are going for a value position where they can make the wiiu look like a bad deal price wise and make the ps4 look over priced.

Nintendo could have a strong defense however for the 2013 holiday with a price drop and heavy hitter software that will show the average consumer the visual difference between the consoles is not that big. Obviously to gaf type gamers the difference will be clear.

All fingers point to a similar price for the 720, in fact the speculation so far had been that the PS4 was going to be more expensive.

I see both consoles selling between $400-$450.

Just the inflation in 6/7 years is considerable. Hope people dont unrealistic expectations about price. Things cost money.
