Good representation of retail, but Steam is pretty popular in Australia so it would be interesting to see the top 10 with digital sales data added.

Looks like we got this as well yesterday:

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has today confirmed that PlayStation®3 established sales leadership position for the 2012 calendar year.

Citing official retail scan data from NPD Group Australia, and following the release today of the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (iGEA) 2012 market overview, PlayStation 3 achieved a trifecta of wins across platform, hardware and software sales within the $1.161 billion dollar games retail industry in Australia.

PlayStation 3 total platform performance - which aggregates platform hardware, software and peripherals - led the interactive entertainment market in Australia by achieving the number 1 industry platform position across both unit sales (25.3%) and driving the highest dollar value share (31.3%) for the industry

PlayStation 3 hardware performed impressively, with PS3 ranking number 1 for both hardware unit sales (27% share), and again driving the greatest value share for the industry (32% share). Sales were buoyed by the release of a new form factor in 2012

PlayStation 3 platform software also achieved the number 1 unit sales position for the year (28.9% share)

According to Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, "PlayStation 3 continues to power in Australia. Our sales leadership strength continues despite factors such as economic downturn, aggressive industry pricing and new competitor consoles being launched. PlayStation 3 sales continue to perform because it remains a great value, high definition entertainment solution for all Australian families that offers exceptional games, movies, TV and music experiences."

"Moving into 2013, with AAA blockbusters on the horizon such as God of War®: Ascension, the critically acclaimed The Last of Us™, BEYOND: Two Souls™, plus more for the family with new titles for Wonderbook™, we plan to continue the PlayStation momentum and magic for our Australian customers."

He concluded, "We are also seeing accelerated growth in our online sales driven by an increased range of digital content and subscription products such as the PlayStation®Plus program in Australia."

Maybe in the 'core' base, but the Wii pissed on the Xbox here for 5 years. It's probably only catching up now.

NZ is the last remaining Sony Land.

Yep. Sony has always had a strong and local presence here, which has entrenched the PlayStation brand. Microsoft tries to run NZ from Australia for years and years now the last time I looked. And Nintendo has never had a decent local distributor who has been able to make traction in the market.

I think Nintendo has their own small office over there now, from what I've been told. But obivously with Sony having a full office of people it helps a lot.

Probably why you guys don't make much Nintendo stuff either :(

^^ Huh, cool. I knew about NZ being sonyland (i live here), but didn't realise its in top spot in AU too.

feb 20th can't come soon enough.

I like to think Far Cry 3 is in the NZ Top 10 cause of the accents.
that blew my mind to oblivion when i first heard it.

With nothing to back it up, I would say Australia is still a Sony land. When we used to get sales figures it would lead comfortably and I doubt much has changed.

Purely anecdotal evidence but most of my mates, none of whom are massive gamers, have 360s. Maybe three have Playstations.
Microsoft seem to have a lot of mindshare as well, I hear a lot of people talk about "playing Xbox." I don't know how long it's been since I've seen someone say "playing Playstation"

Edit: on the stats, probably nothing shocking there. Pretty much a whos who of big selling games

Could be. I think that those people would be more than offset by people who own a PS3 just as a nice blueray player. I know plenty of those.

So yeah, stronger PS3 hardware sales are not the best judge of who is playing what. For instance I do know fighters are 360 land for the top players but other communities like Fifa seem to be on the PS3.

Either way it isn't a particularly exciting landscape :| I'm sure Nintendo's 2012 figures will pick up when those games are released here in 2014.

It is probably a fair enough call to say we have always felt closer to Sony and have had more of an affinity with PlayStation, perhaps partly due to the domestic market situation. We started the company on the back of a PlayStation Net Yaroze hobbyist dev kit after all.

Is NZ/Aussie 360 country?

I thought PS3 was extremely close to overtaking 360 hardware sales in Australia some time last year? Other than that, we have no way of knowing whose land we are from the data in the OP since there's no platform breakup. :|

EDIT: Oh, there's a Sony presser further down. I wish we could get proper hardware numbers in Australia.

By this stage, I would guess all three home consoles have roughly equal market share though. Wii sales seem to have completely and utterly collapsed.

EDIT: I bought none of the games in the top 10. I must be a niche gamer.
