GAF is growing

300 posts and a certain time-frame from what I understood.

Isn't that for membership?
Approval is done randomly by one person at random periods of time.. at least that's what I read in the TOS last time I looked.

Edit: This is probably not really the case anymore. I just had a re-read of the TOS and FAQ.

Also, we have a 64 Xeon core platform with 124 GB ram, with most of the kinks worked out over the last several months, massively overengineered for our typical traffic. We handled Reddit front page and its 26,666 sustained concurrent, so I'm confident in being able to handle the major events for 2013 and scaling to additional cores and hats as necessary.

nice ! :)

Ah so that's way the site has been loading a bit slower.

I really cannot wait to see GAF quotes on boxarts.

Obviously there are a lot of exceptions. Depends on when you're seen to/noticed I guess.

Pretty sure you are mistaken with the jump from junior to full member. I have no idea what the screening process is, oh god, if they could only scan your posts on other forums and just deny you based off your douchiness, that would be great.

Took me 2 years to be accepted into GAF

I'm never leaving until I die or go RAGE Rant for the Banhammer, my Trophy Whoring Agenda needs to be dispersed to the masses

If that was the case then they need to go back and check on some of those approvals

I kid

I did mix those up though.

Nah. You have only been around since 2007. Old timers from the original GAF are elite. ;)

It just feels weird reading how long people some people have had to wait to get approved here. I've been posting on the various incarnations of GAF since the days of Hot Pockets and SuperKyros. There wasn't much, if any wait time for approval back then. Oh how times have changed.

What if you've been lurking for years, but you finally just got around to start posting a year or so ago?

It doesn't count, does it? :(

I'm just messin'.

You have an awesome forum nickname and avatar. Good taste counts for much.

It took me a few weeks to get approved. If memory serves me well, I joined in 2001. It must be tough for the mods to sort through all the noobs. I appreciate that GAF/NeoGAF has always had excellent mods. Running a board like this must be like herding angry cats. The other big, and most little sites, do a much inferior job than what is done here. Hats off to EviLore and crew.

Good lord, I don't think anyone will get rid of the approval system. Have you not noticed how many rubbish juniors we've had over the last couple of days? It'd be a hundred times worse without the approval system.

Yeah. Too many juniors if you ask me.

Still remember the thread that brought me here, sort of. It was some big thread about some guy from here going to another posters house, and the guy who invited him came on here and trashed him. The details are hazy to me right now, maybe someone else knows what I'm talking about?

Speaking of game sites, what do you guys think about gamefaqs? negative or positive view?

Just reading the name GameFAQs makes me laugh out loud.

A lot of people on there have a, "this conversation is a war that I must win" mentality. Whether that's through character attacks, mockery, you name it, it's being done.

There are some awesome people on there, though. I made a good friend on there, which I am thankful for.

Hi gaming side. What is this Pratcher business? I don't visit you guys over here too often.

edit: nvm saw EL's post

**Runs back to OT

About that kind of thing and why people often get bans.... Here is a basic principle to help understand what "respectful" means: Act like you aren't on the internet, but in a room full of people.

When a group discussion in person is getting heated, is that a time to pop in with a joke that belittles the whole topic of discussion and thoughts/feelings of everyone discussing it seriously? No. You will get a social shutdown, and so it is on here, and the response isn't always purely social. Mods are keeping an intellectual/social climate.

So many posters think they're being cute and don't deserve correction, but they aren't and they do. If you are apathetic toward something and want to joke about it, find someone else who is apathetic and chat with them about how silly everyone is being for getting so serious, just like a quiet private chat on a couch at a party.

Just a bit of advice from a decade+ veteran. You can risk your neck if you want.

I always start to make stupid jokes when I get into heated discussions irl. It's not a very uncommon way for people to handle conflicts. Has nothing to do with apathy.

Still i'm not saying that you are wrong. People are just different.

Maybe the people you hang with are more easy-going than the ones I hang with, but if you were here with me I'd say you might want to try and break that habit unless you enjoy people talking about you behind your back. Then again we may even be talking about different sorts of "tension-breaking" joking, which range from silly to insulting. I added the "that belittles" qualifier for a reason.

I was actually going to ask some of the more veteran GAF members, how much does the concurrent GAF population rise during each new new impending console generation. I feel like in the time I've been here, I have seen more junior accounts than at any other time in the last 2 weeks.

And some of the juniors have been utter shit. I'm not one to judge but my god, some of their comments have been straight Busch league.

Show me that smile again. (Show me that smile)Don't waste another minute on your cryin'.
We're nowhere near the end (nowhere near) The best is ready to begin. Oooohhh. As long as we got each other. We got the world spinnin right in our hands. Baby you and me, we gotta be the luckiest dreamers who never quit dreamin'. As long as we keep on givin' we can take anything that comes our way. Baby, rain or shine, all the time. We got each other Sharin' the laughter and love.

I find it weird that people read without posting. Do they like, read GAF daily? Do they know individual members, despite never interacting with them? I don't think I could frequent a message board where I knew that I couldn't comment.

I've been reading GAF since 2006, probably on average somewhere between 2-3 hours/day. I know every prominent poster by name and can usually guess their response to any particular thread. I also understand basically every inside joke on the site, to the point where I almost feel guilty about it.

And as you can see, I almost never post. I will type up multiple responses to threads every day, then just not post. I like to read what other people have to say, learn a thing or two, form my own opinion, then get it out in writing. I think it's fun. But I have no desire for any type of confrontation, as forums are the worst possible place to have a debate. A particularly bad run-in with HaloGAF made that abundantly clear. Never again.

About the only time I will actually post is if someone is in need of advice and either a.) Nobody has helped them out yet or b.) I'm particularly qualified to help. Otherwise, lurker for life.

Not even sure if I'm going to post this yet. hmmm. ah what the hell.

I do this too. I type a response, do something else and when I come back, I feel it's not worth posting anymore and just cancel.
