Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Does anyone have a while label copy of Mushishimesame Futari 1.5? I'm looking to print a cover but I can't find a clean high-res scans online. Would anyone be a bro and do a scan for me?

By the by. You wouldn't happen to know how much a first-press copy with the DLC code goes for do you?

I paid €80 for mine last year, including the DLC code.

Interesting thing just popped up in an Xbox YT ad in Japan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXzI8HBqyL8

Looks like Triangle has a new Shooting Love coming out!
Shooting Love. 10th Anniversary - XIIZEAL & ΔZEAL -
Holy hell, that look great!

Full sprites and everything. :)

Are you looking for scans of the 360 port's case art, or the disc art? Regular or limited edition?

I would hope Shienryu would be the majority of that cost. MMP+PS just received a budget-priced reprinting so isn't worth that much unless you managed a copy that still has the first-press DLC code intact and unredeemed.

I payed ¥4,000 for the MMP/PS rerelease.

Didn't most if not all the Raiden games eventually make it to the US? If so, hopefully this does (yeah right) or they decided to release this one region free.

I'd really like to play it!

Yeah, I'm hopeful. With plenty of little guys like 505, Rising Star, and UFO around, someone should be able to localize it if the disc is region locked. Especially with all dat animu init, it should be an easy sell.

A thread after my own heart....shmups are my fave genre, i'm really not quite sure why but it's surely has something to do with being obsessed with games around master system/mega drive era and there were a lot of shmups then....especially on arcade.

My single fave would have to be Under Defeat. Just love the graphics, the explosions (especially the pause and then BOOOOM on the aircraft carrier/last boss). Also love the particle effects like smoke and reflections on puddles at first boss. I haven't seen another shmup that comes close to it graphically. Huge props to the recent Sine Mora however as this was amazing on so many levels - Excellent excellent music (probably my fave music in a shmup), great graphics and a really twisted yet interesting story.

Cave would definately be the reason I started collecting them however as after playing Guwange when it came out I was convinced they could be works of art just like other games. Especially love the twisted enemy designs (ninja boss that transforms into blanka anyone?) and the character select music.

I have quite an extensive collection, would anyone mind if I posted pics?

Naw, fire away. Plenty of collection pics upthread. Just make sure they're not too huge. Enclose them within a quote block to shrink them if necessary.

Don't forget the living palace and the disgusting demon baby! And the spidercat remains my favourite boss ever.

There are quite a few more Japanese-only, region-locked X360 shmups. That's nowhere near all of them I think...

Also, in WiiWare, there's also Kyotokei, which is not listed in the OP post listing of WiiWare titles.

Also though, this is an obvious little error in one of the OP posts...

Uh, Space Invaders, Asteroids Hyper 64, and Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits Vol.1 were US-developed games that of course released here... how did you mess that up? :)

Too much copy and pasting lends to mistakes, especially going back and editing in the smaller window didn't help matters. I'd be in a lot worse shape if it wasn't for your help in this thread. Should be fixed now, though (moved back up to US release).

Whoa, I've completely missed that one! Must have been deployed when it come out. Is it worth it?

Also, OP, I don't know if your want to open the XBLIG can of worms but there are at least a few high-quality titles on that service.

I'm not sure about including everything (since I haven't done too well so far), but I'd definitely like to point to games worth recommending, this is what is there so far:

Xbox Live Indie games worthing noting:
Decimation X
Leave Home
Prismatic Solid
Revolver 360
Shoot1Up
Snops Attack
Retrofit Overload
Vampire Rage

fatty when you get a chance can you add the following to the op?

Xbox Live Indie games worthing noting:
Revolver 360

Without a doubt the best XBLIG shmup.

Also, another shmup thread:

Grev thread

Should be updated now.

What, no Snops Attack?

You're falling off, fatty. No offense.

I fell off long ago, lol.

I see you added the WiiWare game too, but it's Kyotokei, not Kyotoke. :)

But yeah, otherwise looks good... though you could mention that Shikigami no Shiro III (X360) did get a US release on the Wii as Castle of Shikigami 3. Also, in your PS2 list you list Castle of Shikigami 2 as a US release, but don't mention that it's the same game as Shikigami no Shiro II, the Japan-only Dreamcast, Xbox, and Gamecube releases you have listed under that name. It would probably be better to say that they are the same game.

Also, you probably should specify that the EspGaluda II standard edition (and Platinum Collection edition, it seems) is region-free, but the Limited Edition is region-locked. As it is now, you don't make clear why you have the game listed twice, once as region-free and the other as region-locked.

You're also missing a couple of Japan-released, region-locked Xbox 360 disc releases:
--
Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu (you list the Black Label release, but not the original version which is different)
Strike Witches: Hakugin no Tsubasa
Under Defeat HD (released in Japan and Europe, but region-locked in both regions)

I stopped collecting a couple of years ago but thinking about starting up again. I've had a bad craving for shmups these last couple of days so this was a good excuse to pull them all out of storage and try them out. Gotten a hold of a Saturn now which is the only real platform i'm missing so might start there after finishing the 360 stuff. Bought Akai Katana this morning (dead cheap on ebay picked it up for $16 AUD inc postage). Really hoping the new Cave Shooting Collection gets a region free version - fingers crossed!

A huge thanks to everyone contributing to this thread, it really looks to be the definitive place to go when starting/completing a collection. Shmups are oldskool and hardcore, rare traits in games these days so it's very important to keep the scene alive.

Ginga Force Hard clear!!

Good fucking lord the grind to get there was pretty long.

XUVg7Qfl.jpg

Still a fantastic game. Just a few more achievements to go.

My copy finally came in the mail yesterday - only got to sink an hour into it, but my initial impression was "WTF is going on in Stage 2?!?"

Stage 2 aside, I'm really loving it. It's a bit hard for me on Normal, so I'm taking the easy path to build up some weapons. Sure wish I knew Japanese though...

Soundtrack is amazing, and the graphics are great. All in all, glad this one came region free.

Damn, I really need to start playing that game. Have not even touched it yet :-0

You should! You all should, it's the shooter of the year at the moment.

Looks like someone at shmups has also translated all the weapons in the game, so if you're confused at all definitely take a look.

Yeah, again for Ginga Force it's super important to start on Easy in Story Mode. That's where you'll get the weapons that will help you beef up for Normal and Hard modes.

You can start on Normal in Score Attack because the enemies are much easier and have lower endurance, which means your weapons cut right through them. But in Story Mode they are beefed up and are hard to kill.

Stage 2 is a bit of a challenge, just make sure to avoid the spotlights. You'll unlock an item soon (the Jamming Unit) that will majorly reduce their size which makes it easier to get through that section.

What non-CAVE 360 shmup do I need most in my collection? I've got the two Raiden releases (Raiden Fighters Jet is one of the most purely enjoyable video games I've ever played in my life) and Otomedius Excellent (. . .) but otherwise all my 360 shmups are CAVE. Are there any of the other 360 games (Ginga Force, Eschatos etc) less-bullet hell oriented? Not to give the impression that I don't like bullet hell, I do, but I enjoy games like Soldier Blade more, I think.

Hey guys - Somebody over at shmups.com is starting a shooter-focused zine called Pink Bullets that I thought looked pretty awesome. Maybe you like awesome?

Anyway, check it out and preorder if you like what you see. Pew pew!

Info: http://www.pinkbullets.co.uk/blogs/store/pink-bullets-zine-pre-order/

Store: http://buypinkbullets.bigcartel.com/

I DO like awesome. I also love preordering things that ship at nebulous future dates, so, preordered!

I really like the Shikigami no Shiro games. They're maybe still more bullethellish than you'd like, but they're super neat. Part III is available on 360.

I had to think kind of hard here because I almost exclusively play bullet hell lol.

First I'd recommend Ginga Force over Eschatos. Eschatos has some classic shooters included in it (Judgment Silversword and Cardinal Sins) but Ginga Force has much faster, more intense gameplay and a better overall level of finish in my opinion.

Second I'd recommend Strania, it's on XBLA, it's cheap and it's a really fun and challenging shooter. The weapon swapping mechanic is engaging, the levels have a lot of variety to them, the music rocks and the challenge is high. It'll really push you if you try to 1CC it.

Third I'd say check out some vids of Revolver 360. It's an indie shooter, but has super impressive, rapid gameplay. Some of my arcade shooter friends still play this today, a couple years after release.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I actually own Shikigami 3 on the Wii; I like it fine, I should probably put more time into it.

Your lack of awesome Sega Saturn shooters is disturbing ;p

I was debating between these two games. Do you think the difference is worth the price difference? I just saw that Eschatos had a cheaper rerelease.

Also, My rerelease of Muchi/Pink finally shipped, can't wait for this, I've been wanting to play pink sweets for so long.

Hmm, depends on your budget I guess. Personally I found Eschatos really engaging at first but soured on it after a bit. There are still a few modes I like in the game, so it's by all means worth picking up, but Ginga Force is just more polished and "fair" on the whole. Ginga only gets a little dumb once you get into the Hard difficulty, but if you don't go that far you won't have any issues.

Have fun with Muchi/Pink!

Definitely digging into it this weekend. The translation guide will help immensely. The game does have quite a bit of japanese. Gotta start Fire Emblem too this weekend since the free content ends next week.

Soooooooooo...anyone ever hear of this thing before?

∀KASHICVERSE - MALICIOUS WAKE

I'd love to hear some opinions.

Best $15 I've ever spent since Crimzon Motherf*ckin' Clover! I wrote a brief highlight of the game here if you want to take a look: http://nyu-media.com/feature/comiket-83-stg-highlight-akashicverse-malicious-wake-endless-shirafu/

Basically, it's a "method" based STG. You have a main shot function (spread, can also be focused at the expense of speed) and then the methods, a series of commands that are activated by inputting keys, pretty much fighting game style. It's tricky at first but once you get used to it you are boosting and owning like a pro. The methods can range from melee attacks to turning into a boss (yes, it's called "Eliminator") or instantly warp to another part of the screen while clearing bullets and enemies in the process.

At the moment it has no 360 pad support but that's in the works, so I highly recommend any OTHER than the 360 to play this one. You'll need a proper d-pad for the input methods to work.

It has another feature, which is patterns that react to the beats of the BGM. And boy if they don't react. It's an acid trip at its finest and I freaking love every bit of it!

Absolutely seconding Revolver 360, which by the way has a special retail edition for PC with the OST bundled together for a mere 787 yen! (Roughly $8~$10 bucks!) There is also a sequel, RE:ACTOR in the works and I had the chance of try it and become a western representative in the brutal leaderboards: http://crosseaglet.xii.jp/R360RC83/internet_ranking.html (#7, those scores up there are freaking ludicrous, scoring for the japanese is serious business!)

I had no idea there was a shmup thread at GAF! I'm so subscribing to this! STG addict here. Although I'm more focused on PC doujin STG/shmups at the moment.

edit: did anyone read this article?

http://catstronaut.wordpress.com/2013/02/18/understanding-scrolling-shooters/

Perhaps it's already added to the OP and I didn't notice it.

I think that game is so not fun :(

I am buying Gradius V right now. Life is good

Sine Mora is the sum of it's parts.

- A pretty damn good story considering the genre
- An actual fleshed out, interesting world
- Glorious artwork and designs
- Extremely satisfying to just shoot shit thanks to great audio mix, screen shake, etc.
- Enough under the hood to keep me coming back

I understand it's not particuarly well regarded amongst the elite, but well, i don't give a damn. I love it!

Yeah, definitely buying PS2 Gradius V after watching a run of the 1st stage.
