Vita PSN Game & Service Thread | March 2013 | Carving an Independent niche

I agree that TN is doing good work for the DOA fans and that it is casual friendly.

Other games do have comeback mechanics or mechanics that assist the losing player but none of it is a guess of RPS like the hold system. DOA5 did tone it down compare to doa4 and doa 3 (thank god) but I still despise the whole hold system. Its literally RPS.

The difference between that and other games is that the other player has to make a mistake for the losing player to captivate. Its not a game of RPS. Outside marvel xf system, all the other comeback mechanics rely on the winning player to make a mistake before the losing player can come back. In DOA5 its guess high/low/mid punch or mid kick, after a string at all points of the game. I'm not even talking about super high level because there are some (imo weak) counters to the hold system. At the lowest level of play the hold system greatly benefits the losing player.

You can use a hold and comeback, it's there to give the player a chance that they normally wouldn't get, this where it becomes more friendly to newer players, but there's a huge risk associated with doing it or abusing it.

It's not all RPS, there are tons of guaranteed combos/set ups, frame advantage, etc... Characters like Jann and Bass barely play the guessing game.

Edit: Top of the page buy DOA5+!

I'd love for a new God of War on Vita, but I don't know if there's a good entry point for it in the story now. I mean sure, they could go with Kratos 10 year sentence again, but I feel after Ascension and Chains of Olympus it would be better off in something new story wise, so I'd wish for it to be set in the timeperiod of post 3 (which they could do after 4 eventually comes)
simply one of my best experiences with the vita..dont leave it until you complete it, it has rich content and the last stages puzzles are really tough challenging in a good way! im praying for a sequel :(
Yeah, it's great. I haven't enjoyed a game this much the whole way through in a long time. Oh believe me, I don't plan to until I platinum it, I wanna get the most out of the game I can!

I really hope we get a sequel eventually, I'd happily buy it day one.

All I really want from Sony is Gran Turismo Vita.

Though with that said, what about Sony Online Entertainment? If Sega isn't interested in bringing PSO2 to the Vita in the West, why couldn't SOE step in and do it?

They just released Wizardry Online, which has to be one of the most niche MMORPGs around.

(Then again, I've thought they should have tried to make a MOBA game based on Everquest (for the PS3/4 as well as PC, and maybe even Vita version). Huge, huge genre, the head of the company says how much he likes playing it (DOTA2, I think). So maybe, make one?)

God of War: Chains of Olympus was teased in God of War 2's manual.
God of War: Ghost of Sparta was teased in God of War III's manual.

What will be teased in God of War: Ascension's manual?

Nothing

There won't be a manual.

edit

Great VITA fighter imo is SFxT if you can play it effectively since shoulder buttons are HP/HK. Otherwise I would have to go to umvc3 (but online can be barren).

All I want on the vita is P4A, and SC5 fighter wise.

I set the shoulder buttons to LP/LK so my mediums and heavies are easier to hit.

All I really want from Sony is Gran Turismo Vita.

Why not. Give them a chance to redeem themselves after the shitty Gran Turismo on PSP.

yay my account is finally reactivated (never change your email on GAF)

wanted to ask what are the Vita anniversary sale games I must get before this is over.
was thinking of MotorStorm RC Complete
Life of Pixel

Motorstorm is one of the Best DD games on the store and basically a must if you are into highscore gaming.
Life of Pixel is cute, but nothing substantial. If you just feel like listening to cute chiptunes through different gaming eras and some challenging platforming (with some design drawbacks like blind jumps to death), Life of Pixel is worth it.
And get Sound Shapes if you like 2 of the following 3: Music, Music integration in games, If you want to see a game that even Toto likes.

No problems so far from playing Smart as, although it's recognition of the E and C ticked me off XP.

So PvZ is pretty addicting...

Playing through it for the first time ever. Well I tried it on PS3, but it's much better on Vita.

Yep, at the time I wouldnt have thought that a "mobile" game could hook me as much. I think the only mobile games that did that to me were PvZ and Game Dev Story.

Does anyone know if the Japanese version of Earth Defense Force Portable is playable without any knowledge of the language? I know I can buy it off the Euro PSN, but I really like my physical carts.

How simple is switching memory cards? I've previously read that it resets all your bubbles and layouts but one thing I found through Google mentions that backgrounds and layouts stay on any "page" that has any of the system default bubbles (e.g. trophies, settings, etc.).

Also saw someone mention that the database has to rebuild each time you swap? Is that a quick process or does it take a bit of time?

I only have an 8GB card and could survive with a 16GB for awhile if swapping is simple and not a pain. I wouldn't swap super often but I could see me keeping some stuff on the 8GB and going back to it instead of constantly re-downloading and shuffling things around through content manager.

I skimmed the OP to see if it mentioned anything about this and also went to the Vita Tips thread or whatever it was called but this will be simpler to just ask.

Only NA/EU versions can play together, so you'd be locking yourself into JPN only multiplayer if you do so. Import at your own risk!

I recently picked up the Japanese version for the same reason - wanted a physical copy. It's very easy to play with no knowledge of the language. Only problem is you can't really tell what's what in the weapon selection menu, but it's fun to experiment!

I got back to my Jp account to use the free 15 days PS+, only for Ridge Racer and the PC Engine games. And downloaded the latest demos (TOHr, Zero no Kiseki and Gunhound EX).

Zero no Kiseki demo is awesome.

When I switch cards I dont have to rebuild the data base, no. What does happen tho is that the bubbles for carts and system level apps stay where they are. All other bubbles get thrown in a random order on the back pages.

So if you just leave all those bubble at the back and don't care then I guess its fine. Just keep all cart bubbles and system lvl apps on the first pages.

However its anoying to me so I dont bother. Why I got a 32gb card in the end. Sold my 16 gig one to my brother and have an 8gig one sitting there. If PSO2 never gets a UK release I might turn it into that at somepoint.

Is there anything I need to do to see games from both NA and EU? or is it like that by default. I just find it hard to believe there is only ever 1-3 room up at one time if i have access to all of EU and NA.

Y'know, the more I play MUD, the more I like it. I think my initial impressions were clouded by the fact that your starting 'hero' has very low stats and as such, falls off his bike if someone in the crowd so much as farts. Now I'm enjoying some really close races and the seemingly pointless 'scrub' mechanic is actually providing a nice 'risk / reward' factor.

I'm glad there's a ton of content in there because I reckon I'll be playing it for a while.

Anyone else find that there are a few sudden spikes in difficulty in Ragnarok Odyssey? First two chapters were smooth sailing, then third chapter was killing giants every mission, then that dbag Grendel at the end. Then at times, the missions are really simple. It made me try out online play and I love it! Really fun playing with others... only problem is the errors that appear once in a while and push me back into single player mode. I got to the last chapter just playing with others and I have almost every trophy now (except the zenny and card ones). Really enjoying the game and looking forward to that Game Complate!

Also, it made me more excited for PSO2 (which I just imported and have friends I can play with) and Soul Sacrifice! Really pumped for that one.

Zero no Kiseki demo is awesome.
I want to play this game soooo badly.

30 day return warranty for everything.
That's serviceable then I guess.

How much content? In which form? Different modes?

There was so much talking that I thought it was a visual novel. I'm guessing it's really long because it does not get to the point..
I would love for some kind of English translation to the story text so that I could read along, but I doubt that would ever happen.

Ah, right. That'll be ok as I don't play online.

Excellent! Many thanks indeed. :)

Yeah I like the way it spikes like that. It seems to also drive a more active online side where people having trouble go online to get help.

Im currently on chapter 6. I have fun both solo and online and have the trophies for 30 offline and 30 online matches so I guess I have been splitting them pretty even.

There is that extra mission where you have the orc boss and orc king to defeat. Pretty hard solo because of how there moves work (solo they are easy but 2 arm windmills with orc spawns really ups the difficulty).

So I try it online but people keep dying by running to there deaths. Melee button mashing syndrome I think. I play mage so I be a little more cautious and keep my distance when certain moves are incoming.

Having great fun with it though. Cant help feel it needs difficulty lvls though so you can go through it all again for better loot once completed.

Still Its really there to keep me going till soul sacrifice as far as online action RPG's go.

This bodes well.

I find myself picking up my Vita every night. Just to play a round of golf.. and I have a big PS+ backlog on my PS3 (Sleeping dogs and MANY more)..

That's serviceable then I guess.

How much content? In which form? Different modes?

Tons!

It's divided up into three main modes:

'Official Mode'
-Quick Race
-Championship
-Monster Energy FIM MXoN (Motocross of Nations, not sure how it differs from 'Championship').

'MUD World Tour' - (This is where I've spent all my time).
-Events (Tons of events to unlock via in-game currency, several different race 'types')
-Heroes (Where you buy stats for four characters)
-Quick Race
-Monster Energy Trick Battle (Stunt arenas, sometimes crop up in 'Events' too)
-Trick Shop (Where you buy trick cards to unlock new tricks)

'Multiplayer'
(I can't sign into PSN at work so I've no idea what's in here).

Three classes of bikes (MX1, MX2 & Open). 50 official riders (MX1 & MX2), 4 'heroes' (riders that the player buys stats for). 12 MX tracks, 6 trick arenas. I'm probably missing some stuff because I'm trying to quickly flick through it at work.

Any major issues with MUD, Dave? It all sounds pretty good. I'd trust your word over reviews out there in the wild. I recall PocketGamer not being particularly kind to it.

Anyone got any tips for Rally Cars in Motorstorm RC? They WAAAY to floaty for me and I can't seem to figure them out.

Yeah, the modes sound really cool but most reviews were super negative. Might pick it up as well. What's the size?

Nothing major jumps out at me. You need to pay careful attention to the 'attitude' of the bike when racing because sloppy landings or cornering can see you eat dirt pretty easily. The bike has a tendency to buck forward over medium sized bumps which can be a little frustrating sometimes if you're not quick enough to counteract it. Attempting any sort of left / right course-correction during a back-flip or front-flip is pretty much guaranteed to fail as the rotation goes all awry and it's impossible to straighten back up. The trick inputs seem to need spamming sometimes, or maybe they need entering very quickly.

I wouldn't trust my word though, I'm pretty easy to please as long as the game in question falls into a genre I really like. I can't claim to be objective in any way and I often enjoy mediocre games. I'm always hesitant to recommend games because of that.

I can see why it might not review well. If you're not 'determined' to work with the handling and suss out the quirks of the bikes and riders, I can see it being extremely frustrating. It really does need you to pay attention to the lines and contours of the course and the bike needs a deft touch to keep it shiny side up. I suppose the amount of content isn't really a boon if you don't enjoy the whole 'ride a bike in a muddy circle' side of things.

For all I know, the physics could be completely fucked, objectively speaking. I just know that I've stuck with it and now I'm enjoying some really close and exciting racing where one mistake will cost you the race but nailing berm after berm and 'scrubbing' every jump to take the win feels great.

It's 581mb installed.

Train, train, train. Its just a matter of relearning the controls, because you need to brake way earlier and braking while steering is even more dangerous. Maybe look at a yt video to see how they should be played.
