One month from today: BioShock Infinite

I thought there was a sense of mystery to it in the first few seconds of the film, with a girl nervously looking around as she's got a noose around her neck and she's in the crosshair of a gun, then the crosshair cuts to an old man excitedly talking to a crowd of people around the woman, and then we see the that the old man is the one who is intented to be shot and then the plan breaks down. Then the video just ends with the blimp popping up. It may not be super rich in depth but I totally disagree that it's just a commercial that lacks any mystery at all and that the commercial is just showing mindless killing

Except replace Top Hat with Old Guy and rattle the camera around REAL FAST and then everyone is dead before the eyes stop spinning in their sockets.

Is this the one with the cut "dash" or "teleport" plasmid?
He doesn't use many plasmids here. It's basically the first full demo that was shown to the press I believe and then released later for the public.

The Big Daddy concept blew my mind the first time Ken explained it. Never really thought of any enemy in a FPS 'not' engaging me based on my choice (or a rogues bullets choice for example).

I hope this game has some magnificently huge action setpiece involving the skylines, for like a big boss fight or something, I'm talking like some Spielbergian shit with multiple layers and the music getting more intense with each progressive stage... then again this type of action is something that games usually fail to achieve so I'll keep my expectations low in that regard. Not even the Uncharted games have really nailed that, although a handful of action scenes have straddled the line on occasion, but they never quite reach it.

The commercial is tepid, but functional.

It's clumsy, cluttered with advertisement jargon, and surprisingly lacks the efficacy of the in-game trailers and "Beasts of America" commercial that was running in theaters for a stint.

It isn't exemplary, but it gets the job done. I can see this appealing to the demographic BioShock remained inconspicuous of upon its release. This is reminiscent of the much bemoaned boxart. And much like the boxart, it doesn't really coalesce into anything more than something to get a patron to buy the game. Once the marketing subsides, the only thing left is the game.

We won't get more of something if it doesn't produce a profit. That's the unfortunate reality of the entertainment industry; it's a business, and the livelihood of many are dependent on a product being lucrative.

I suspect we'll fight Songbird on skyrails, if indeed we fight him at all.

I'm really looking forward to Infinite, as it seems very novel and creative. At the same time, what I've played of the original Bioshock has been hit and miss. The visuals and setting are fantastic, the hacking aspect is fun, but the enemies are very repetitive, the gunplay is boring, and the objectives often boil down to trivial fetch-quests (i.e., arbitrary obstacles with little relevance to the plot being placed before you).

Also, am I the only one who finds the audio logs difficult to understand? I usually need to listen to them again.

I'm almost at Ryan's office. However, I've also heard that the game kinda sucks after the plot twist. Should I bother continuing to play beyond that point?

It's not that the game sucks after that point, but the feeling becomes just going through the motions to reach narrative closure. I'd recommend finishing it though, just for the segment before the final boss.

You make a compelling case. God that trailer is great. But, I still think its too much going on, too many quick cuts to resonate with a mainstream crowd.

Yeah, a lot of that would look janky, disconnected, and confusing to most. The commercial is still a bit confusing, but there's so much BANG!@ action that it doesn't matter. The greatest videogame trailers are only great to those who went online and watched them. People who rely on tellevision to get their gaming news don't need all that.

The trailer actually breathes. If anything, what ran on TV tonight had too much shit going on, and too fast, for that matter. The ad that ran on TV tonight was high-speed nonsense. The "Beast of America" trailer actually has a couple shots establishing the place and mood before showcasing the action. They could've dropped some of the action shots from the "Beast" trailer and recut the music for 60 seconds and it would've been superior, not to mention more indicative of the actual product.

Exactly. I just think Beast of America, while awesome, relies too much on prior knowledge of the title to be effective to a larger, mainstream audience. I will say that some establishing shots of the setting would have been great though.

Interesting blast to the past. Bit hard to watch with that FOV though, heh. Little Sister getting killed by that Splicer was pretty neat; I'd forgotten they were once vulnerable in combat. Fun to spot all the differences between that demo and the final game.

Are you watching the same video that is in your quote?

Finally watched that Ken Levine lecture/QA session. Really great stuff!

Been going back and watching old Bioshock videos. Can't believe it's been so long since Irrational released the original game.

Must have watched this e3 demo video a bazillion times back in the day.

Watching this walkthrough trailer made me want to play through Bioshock 1 again.

I got it when I pre-ordered Infinite but I'm trying to avoid burnout.

It will have to wait for after Infinite is finished.

Hanging out tonight with some friends. Non/light-gamer lady friends responded well to the new 60 second trailer. Male gamer friends responded well to in game footage. Say what you want about the new trailer, but there is no doubt that it works.

Steam pre-orders at 68% to unlocking X-Com!

I think we can safely say that those that pre-order on Steam will be getting a copy of X-com now.

I like the TF2 hats, especially the heavy George washington and the Engie's. But I wish more pre-orders made taunts like the one from Brutal Legend. That is nice fun.

Just watched that BAFTA Q&A as well. Regardless of one's opinion on his games, Levine is a pretty interesting interview subject. Seems like a really smart guy.

woah, Sn4ke...
