Oculus Rift unboxing and article

Ladies and gentlemen, the future.

I have never in my life been so excited for anything gaming related. It doesn't touch Final Fantasy VII hype levels, Zelda 64 hype levels, certainly any new console hype levels.

The only thing close to this would be Street Fighter IV. And even that, the holiest of returns, doesn't hold a candle.

Of course there are patents on everything about OR, from hardware to the software algorithms. It's just that patent trolls won't bother until it takes off and start making good money.

Pretty much. There are companies making very high end products that are about to feel the pinch of being vastly undercut by Oculus. We're talking going down from tens of thousands of dollars to $300.

Oculus is going to need the protection of a large company.

I think I nearly died in anticipation of Ocarina of Time, but this is definitely the most hype I've felt as an adult.

The dev kits will probably be worth a pretty penny later on down the road. I can see it being a nice collectors piece. Hope I'm in the first batch!

Did I read that right? They're ready to ship out 10,000 of these babies? Or do they mean that they have a total of 10,000 that they need to reach?

I had to double take at that as well. I think they just mean that they have 10,000 to ship. By my math, they couldn't have more than a few thousand Rift's made yet (the factory didn't get back from vacation until March 11th, and full capacity is 500 or so Rift's per day).

When is the consumer version of this supposed to hit the streets. Really want to pick this up for my next rig I'm building in 2014. It's hard to believe that something this awesome is only $300.00

I'm getting insanely excited myself. I won't be getting my kit until April but these next two weeks are going to be chock full of exciting news and announcements.

REALLY glad to hear that there is a sample demo included in the SDK. I was kind of hoping that the Epic Citadel demo would be included but this Tuscany thing sounds great. As long as there is something that I can IMMEDIATELY boot up the moment I plug in my rift and explore! TF2 and Hawken can come after.

Very slick packaging.

So how does it work in a FPS like TF2 if you want to do a 180? Does the Rift work like a track IR where you choose your direction with the mouse but can look around in another direction with the sensor?

From what I've read it seems like TF2 is doing it different from how John Carmack did it. In the Doom 3 demo the player's gun was completely tied to the middle of his/her field of vision. Wherever you looked the gun aimed there. You could still look around with the analog stick as well but the gun is still tied to the middle of your vision.

In Team Fortress 2 your mouse controls the gun's aim and your head looks around so you can be looking and aiming at different things, but apparently when you move your mouse to the edge of the screen you also turn in that direction. So I'm not sure if you could ever actually be looking in the complete opposite direction of where you're aiming (you are always aiming somewhere in you're FOV, just not always the middle). At least I think that's how it is.

But to do a 180 in TF2 you could actually look behind you (which is awful hard with a mouse/keyboard) or use your mouse to turn, or any combination of the two.

What's exciting to me is that even without the head tracking, it should be able to function is a very good 3D display. My 3D display has a lot of cross-talk so this would be much preferred. Correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Wow, the new screen is 90g heavier? That's not insignificant at all. Good to know they're scaling back the size for the retail unit, at least. Still kind of disappointing to hear for the dev kit though.

Still, I'm pumped for this. Can't wait to get mine. Order 4562 here.

My guess is that since it has such a high FOV, it would feel very claustrophobic without headtracking. It would be like being stuck in a neck brace. It would also induce motion sickness if you did move your head.

Videos of people playing with the Rift in a hectic fps fight are going to be hilarious.

Provided the game has support for its large FOV, 3D is going to be crosstalk-free, since you have two separate images on separate pixels.

I've been tempted to buy this for a while, but when it comes down to it my PC isn't powerful enough to handle it with something like Hawken. But man would I be the coolest nerd on the block with this thing.

I'm thinking of buying a dev kit, for those that already have when do they take the money from your acc?

Do you think people buying now will actually get one sent out?, the T&C's seem a bit shady when it comes to eligibility, the OC has no warranty at all but I guess that's normal for DEV kits?

Yeah they took my money through paypal instantly as far as I'm aware of.

The first batch seems to be for kickstarter backers.

I know it will be crosstalk-free, I wasn't asking about that. What I'm asking is would I be able to plug this into my PS3 and for 3D gaming without head tracking? Or would the game still have to be tailored for the Rift.

And I presume if they can't send one out for whatever reason I guess they will refund me? after reading the T&C's it almost feels like a gamble tbh but I'm desperate to get this in my hands, not just for myself but for other people to try.

if the game supports aide by side output you could try it, but it's going to be distorted. So not really, no.

If you order now, you probably won't get your shipment until April or May due to constrictions on production.

I want this on my face right now. Damn it when do they ship!?

They have still been claiming that "a ton" of backers will have their dev kits in hand before GDC (which starts Monday), so unless they are completely lying and leading us on they will be shipping this week. Perhaps they are waiting to do a big simultaneous announcement/shipment during GDC next week, but they certainly won't wait much longer than that.

They're not going to take your money and not deliver a product. That was a real possibility with the kickstarter pledges (since they're non-refundable donations) but it's a proper sale when you go through the site. You'd have all the protection that Paypal/a credit card/etc offers buyers.

I'd be shocked if the SDK didn't have all of the demos they've shown thus far (various Unity and Unreal demos mostly).

So in a month or two every Dev Kit should be shipped.

Barring some factory related disaster, all kits should be delivered by the end of May.

I'd say it's normal. Considering the way they've done business thus far (offering refunds when they don't have to, delivering more than expected, etc) I would hope that they'd give you a replacement if the kit they shipped you turned out to be a lemon. After that, it's a dev kit and not a retail product, so the chances of getting a replacement probably go down as time goes on.

Cool thanks, looks like I'll be joining the line then, I hope intentional deliveries aren't staggered.

There is incredible potential here but I am waiting for the consumer version. Once the bugs have been fixed, the resolution increased, and the design finalized I will be all over this.

Sadly, you're wrong about this, at least if you're talking about the consumption of traditional 3D content. Due to the high FoV and optical properties of the Rift, it isn't really suited to displaying legacy content.

Any information on how heavy it is and if it's glasses friendly?

380g, yes - you can move the lenses forward and back to leave room for glasses. Or take your glasses off and use one of the two sets of replacement lenses it comes with to compensate

Interesting, however I will wait for a reasonable number of retail reviews before allowing my inner child to take over.

I assumed you were thinking about pc games.

Games need to be adjusted for the higher FOV and the fish-eye lenses, so no console support.

Although I think some developer (on the ps3) will eventually release a patch, who knows.
