Metal Gear Solid V announced (PS360, open world)

As someone who has never played a MGS game but has been at least following The Phantom Pain stuff I am can say I am very confused. I don't really know who any of these people are or what is going on. I wonder that if I were to play it would anything make sense to me or would it all be too deep into the franchise to start. I imagine it could be something similar to starting with Mass Effect 3 and then feeling confused at all of the back references.

Jumping into MGSV is way, WAY more convoluted than jumping into Mass Effect 3. At the very least, you need to be familiar with MGS3 and MGS: Peace Walker to recognize the characters. Then there's MGS1, MGS2, and MGS4 which fill out a ton of other crap.

It's a lot. People who've been there from the beginning still don't know WTF is going on.

so, i gotta ask, after watching this trailer, would it be a good idea to start playing PW? I've heard nothing but negative comments about the game by quite a few posters on here. Kind of turning me off from playing it.

What's the thing on Snake's forehead, during that last segment? I've seen it a few times but can't figure out that it is. Kinda looks like a devilish horn, but that can't be right. :P

This is a real mind bender. Crazy Kojima. Always managing to leave mysteries.

@DavidBHayter Such a shame. Did they even ask you to do it?
@KarelHering Nope.

He may not have been the best but his voice was snake, it was one of his defining features and I'm sure we will all get over it, but it's just weird

I think the biggest clues that stand out for me are two words. Ishmael. Phantom. The definitions and backstories offer a lot of possibilities. Intriguing ones.

I'm not at all surprised Hayter wasn't even asked back. He is fucking awful.

The story in that game is garbage.

I think we all knew it'd happen at some point as BB gets older. I mean all the kiddos had different voices and BB in MGS4 was a diff VO too.

It would be an awful decision to not have these on next gen but I have a feeling they are waiting for the nextbox to get announced before saying anything.

Holy Hell... I wanted to post a drooling gif using Google new gif search... wow the results I got... ahaha....

Anyway this looks pretty damn cool and puzzling as usual with Kojima.
I'm really intrigued with that stone thingy on his forehead... anyone has ideas?

Moby Dick actually makes mention of Ishmael and a phantom:

looking down from the masthead one night, Fedallah thinks that he sees a whale spouting. The ship then tries to follow it but the whale is not seen again. Mysteriously, a similar spout is seen regularly each night from then on. Ishmael calls it a “spirit-spout” because it seems to be a phantom leading them on. Some think it might be Moby Dick leading the ship on toward its destruction. The Pequod sails around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, a particularly treacherous passage. Through it all, Ahab commands the deck robustly and, even when he is down in the cabin, keeps his eye on the cabin compass that tells him where the ship is going. Between the phantom spout and the dangerous passage, the men resign themselves to being “practical fatalists.”

Ishmael seems like part of the running gag with Phantom Pain. The entire Moby Dick Studios troll, and the first thing the guy says in this trailer is "Call me Ishmael". Obvious Kojima trolling.

More of this convulted mess? *sigh*

Kojima should do a reboot. The series is IMO way too old for a story this complicated. By now there shouldn't be a lot of hardcore fans any more and I don't see this series being appealing to new audiences at all. Kojima should just reboot or at least make a clear cut and intoduce a new cast of characters.

The part at the end, he was all suited up, had a new arm and a new group Diamond Dogs was already established.

So it might take place a few years after him waking up from his coma.

The horn on his forehead confuses the hell out of me.

Project Ogre.

I wonder if they taking the interesting part of Dead Space 1 with the hallucinations and make the 2nd half of game make you wonder what is real or not. Psycho Mantis trolling with you is going be insane

Ocelot could be true. If the kid is Chico, GZ is taking place after 1979 probably (due to the walkman). The coma came afterward, because we see a still young Chico on site and not a 9 year older guy. So it could be almost 1990 when Snake wakes up.

Ocelot was born on D-Day I think, so he'd be about 45 during MGSV.

Can someone give a concise thing of what the fuck is happening in these trailers? How do you guys know that's Volgin? Who is Ishmael? What's the deal with the horns on any of the characters? What are these phantoms? I'm confused. Who's chico?

I think there are hints in the Ground Zeroes trailer which might provide answers to who the third person in the operating room is, and what might be going on in MGS5.

- The XOF guy left Chico to be rescued by Big Boss, after he presumably provided information to them.

- Before he takes off after destroying all the evidence of XOF being there, he says "The Trojan Horse is in."

Who's the Trojan Horse? Chico? Something hidden inside Chico? Is this a trap that resulted in the destruction of Mother Base, or is the trap something larger? Maybe they planted someone close to Big Boss when all the shit goes down, and this entire charade is tied to that.

I took it that the "Trojan Horse" was the helicopters.

Weren't they changed from XOF to FOX? Implying that the guys at Mother Base would see "their" choppers and let them land with no problem -- or was the XOF erased completely? I don't remember.

Damn it Kojima, this game, this fucking game always gets me, you hit the right notes with that trailer, beautiful music, graphics, beautiful everything!

Into my veins now please.

I think they completely erased, and removed their labels as well.

This is going to be the most batshit over the top installment. It's going to make the others look modest and down to earth by comparison.

XOF was removed entirely. They didn't replace anything with FOX. A Trojan Horse is generally not pretending to be the enemy, but rather providing a "gift" with a hidden trap inside. It has to be Chico.

Because it looks like Volgin.

Ishmael is the bandage guy, he said it himself. :P

Dunno.

Dunno.

Chico is the kid who likes monsters in Peacewalker.
