Words can't express how excited I am for this album.

I made this thread for two reasons:
1. In anticipation of Emancipator's new album.
2. To expose his music to as many people as I can. This man's music has really made an impact on me, and I wouldn't want anyone to miss it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emancipator is Douglas Appling, who is joined in the live setting by Violinist Ilya Goldberg.

From an interview on the natural theme of his music's sound:
LiS: Both of your albums’ names and artwork seem to have a natural theme. Does nature provide you with inspiration for your work?

Emancipator: I make computer-based music but gravitate toward organic sounds. The natural world is amazing. Nature moves you the way beautiful music moves you. Beyond that, there are many familiar qualities found in nature that can be seen in music, like repetition, nested patterns, rhythms. So yes, I’m a big fan of nature. I live in Oregon. I watch a lot of Planet Earth.

Loci Records is Emancipator's own label, which he recently started. He had this to say about starting Loci Records:
emancipator said:
Fellow Music Lovers,
For years, I’ve found great purpose and pleasure in producing music as Emancipator. To have reached so many people along the way who resonate with my sound is incredibly inspiring. I’d like to build upon this response and cultivate a community of shared musical taste by introducing my own record label. As its name suggests, Loci Records is a meeting place, a point of convergence for myself and others who share a similar musical vision. Its focus is on the crossroads of melodic downtempo, instrumental hip hop, and electronica.

Soon It Will Be Cold Enough
Emancipator's first official release. For those of you Nujabes fans, Emancipator was picked up by him because of this album.
With Rainy Eyes was featured on Nujabes' Hydeout Productions 2nd Collection album.
Because of this, he got to visit Nujabes and meet up with him, Uyama Hiroto, and other Hydeout Productions members.

Other Tracks from Soon It Will Be Cold Enough
Anthem (one of my favorites)
When I Go

Safe in the Steep Cliffs
This is the album that I picked up through the Jazz-Hop thread(check this thread out if you haven't!), and that ultimately made me the huge Emancipator fan that I am. I can listen to this album at any time, and never get tired of it.
The variety on this album is ridiculous.

Samples from this album:
Jet Stream (I love the bass line in this song)
Kamakura (This song features Uyama Hiroto of Hydeout Productions on the saxophone)
Old Devil

Elephant Survival
This song blew my mind. He took a folk song done by the band Elephant Revival, and turned it into THIS!
When he played this song at his show, everyone was dancing.

Shook (Mobb Deep x Sigur Ross)

This is a MUST LISTEN!

Comments on Emancipator from GAF members

From the "albums that changed your views on music thread:
Emancipator

I realized that sampled music could be beautiful as well.

From the Jazz-Hop Thread:
emancipator in general is incredibly solid and should be not be slept on at all, but this album of his, this is some next level shit. While listening, you'll go from tracks like 'Old Devil' Which sounds as if it's prepping your ass for the battle to come, to a track like "Ares" Which basically signals your loss of that battle. It's amazing just how much a story you're able to derive from these instrumentals.

Funny note: He didn't start out as a dude on Hydeout, but he was picked up by Nujabes for a Japanese release after his first album, "Soon it Will Be Cold enough," made it's way around and over the seas.

Edit: Forgot to mention that Emancipator is amazing. One of my top 10 artists for sure. Anyone who likes Emancipator should also check out Bonobo. His album Black Sands is incredible.

Holy shit @ that Emancipator album. Thanks for recommending it to me, Miri.

Everyone should check it out!

All the tracks can be listened to on his blog.

yeah, i can't echo the Emancipator nods enough, i learned of them on here the same time as Thallus (again, also great).

Tour Info

I've seen Emancipator live, and it was honestly one of the best nights of my life. Such a good time.
For anyone interested, here's my experience from seeing Emancipator live.

Stumbled upon Emancipator on Pandora a few years back. His music feels so ethereal and atmospheric. I love it. It especially lends itself to cinema.

fantastic artist, great OP. i can't wait to see them live next month.

i don't have much to add here because Jaroof was so thorough, just that if you enjoy this sound, feel free to make a home at Jazz-Hop!

Emancipator is fucking amazing.

The music sets the mood so well sometimes. Especially if you're in a "thinky" zone.

Holy shit. First time I've heard this.
That mixes together so well!
I'm pretty sure that's not Emancipator who mixed it, but damn!

yeah man, i love it. can't believe that was like 8 years ago now. sage had a slow down gandhi remix contest, and that was his favorite one. he described it:

"This remix turned the song into a highschool crush. I am afraid to ask her to the prom. Then when I see her dancing with my arch rival I head to the bathroom and hide in a stall so that I can cry. I wish I didn't wait so long to ask her out but now I have to watch her lock lips with Jason. I punch the stall. I build up my rage, walk out of the stall and punch the mirror. I leave the dance with swollen eyes and bloody fists. Hats off Emancipator."

hahaha. good times.

Haha that's pretty great.

Well, Emancipator's homepage says that Dusk to Dawn is available now on their bandcamp page, but it's not. I think they're still uploading it..

It's up and bought! Kind of wish my awesome earbuds weren't in the mail for replacement right now...

EDIT: Wow, I've only listened to Valhalla and it's freaking amazing. Emancipator at his best right here.

Yup, officially up!
Downloading it now :)

Wasn't able to download it earlier because I was heading to meet a friend at the gym.
Tried to download it so I could listen to it on the way to the gym, but they didn't finish uploading it -_-

Edit: My God, listening to Eve II with headphones is blissful.

Not gonna lie, kinda disappointed it's only ten tracks.. and Natural Cause is pretty much a revised version Kindred Spirit from Marcus D's Melancholy Hopeful...
But I'm liking it.

Holy shit. I just randomly checked the Emancipator site, today out of all days. I had no idea a new album was coming out.

I am stoked.

I'll buy it and listen to it tonight. Gonna get myself a glass of scotch and my AKG K701 and melt away. :)

Absolutely. Emancipator was my study music in university.

Anybody have any thoughts on this album?

Afterglow is definitely one of my favorites. Hooked me the first time listening.

Starting my listen now. Man, he's really growing with this one. Valhalla has a lot of complexity and nuances.

This really makes me wish I had a high end DAC and amp right now...I think it would sound even better.

After listening some more, Outlaw quickly grew on me.. as did Valhalla.

It's cool that he used a sample from Safe in the Steep Cliffs for Merlion, but that song's still not clicking with me.. eh, that's exactly how it was for his other albums, though. Took me quite a few listens before they "clicked". It's like I heard things I didn't hear previously.

He's doing a lot more with strings in this album. I'm sure that's because of Ilya, though.

so hyped...gonna go stream before deciding on digi or physical purchase later, here's to hoping he performs some of this stuff soon as well

Oh, he will. He was performing Minor Cause at the concert I went to, though I didn't know what it was at the time.
He had some other songs too, and I have them recorded.. but I can't make out what they are due to the crappy recording on my phone. :p

Edit:
Huh, after using my headphones to listen to Kindred Spirit, and then Natural Cause, I realized that the sound is pretty different between the two songs.
In Natural Cause, it seems like the percussion takes a tiny bit of a backseat so that the melodies could come out a bit more.

Not quite sure what to think yet. It's going to take me quite a month or two of listening before I make up my mind.

For now, the standouts for me are Minor Cause, Valhalla, Dusk To Dawn, and The Way. That's not necessarily to say they're the best tracks on the album, but rather that they're been the most memorable thus far.

I was feeling the same way.
After a few days of listening, I can say that it's pretty damn good. Already grew on me.
Songs have just been randomly getting stuck in my head.
The only one that stood out to me as kind of strange was Galapagos.. it's very ambient. It fits quite well as the album finisher, though.
The closest thing I can compare it to is The Darkest Eve of the Year.

A bit disappointed with this album. I mean, it's fantastic and it's more Emancipator, but it feels very short. It's basically 9 tracks, considering the last one is just ambience. I'd probably rate this one a bit behind safe in the steep cliffs as a whole. I really do wish there were maybe another 3 tracks...it would feel like a much more complete effort. The quality of his samples are better than safe in the steep cliffs (glad he didn't decide to reuse Kamakura's mouse clicks), and the overall tonal balance of the album is better. safe in the steep cliffs was a little bassy and shrill...Dawn to Dusk adds in some much needed warmth. So while the album is a bit disappointing in terms of length, the quality is there.

Minor Cause is a great opener. The video is great as well. The picture in the OP with Emancipator lying down, eyes closed, is exactly how I feel when I listen to his albums.
Valhalla is still my favorite track. Really love how the layers come together.
Merlion. I like the track, but I'm not a huge fan of him reusing the sample from safe in the steep cliffs's title track. It's a little weird since it keeps reminding me of that song.
Outlaw isn't bad, but it does feel a bit gimicky and repetitive. It's this album's Black Lake.
Dusk to Dawn is fantastic. I really love the guitar riff. For some reason, it reminds me of an old Russian song I used to listen to.
The Way is a great track. The highlight here is the sax.
Afterglow reminds me a lot of Ares. Very similar tone and pacing.
Eve II. I don't have anything in particular to say about this one. It's probably the least memorable track on the album.
Natural Cause is a really beautiful wind-down song. Perfect ending to a pretty fantastic album.
Galapagos...I don't even notice this track. It's mostly harmless but I don't think it adds much to the album.

That's a pretty detailed review of the album, TheExodu5.
How many times have you listened to it? And have you listened with headphones?
I ask because headphones & time changed my view on some of the songs; namely Eve II.
The first time I listened to it, I thought it was just alright. When I put my headphones on to listen to it, it was completely different. It's definitely one of my favorite tracks on the album.
For me, the majority of this album had this grow on me.

I didn't immediately like Valhalla, Merlion, Outlaw, or Galapagos. After a few more listens, they're all great to me. I agree with you putting it behind Safe in the Steep Cliffs, but I think it's just about on par with Soon it will be Cold Enough.. except for the fact that it has a few less tracks.
Oh, and the title track is fantastic, as always. I've been blasting that in my car on the daily.

Damn, I love how I've listened to this album so many times already, but I can still hear new things in some of the songs.
Still lovin' it. Even more than before.

Nice. I bought his first album straight from him a long time ago. Looking forward to this dropping.

????

But wow, straight from him..?

Cool thanks, I will pick this up soon. IIRC, he is from the Virginia area and I saw a show. I remember one tracked featured an artist I liked from the same area, an artist named Thao Nguyen.

That would be When I Go.
That's great. So you must've seen him a while back, then, huh?
Have you listened to his second album yet? If not, I highly recommend it. Currently my favorite album.
