Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) coming to NA retail/eShop Summer 2013 (July 16)

If I gave a shit about cell phone gaming - no, this isn't some old PS1 port, port of a snes title with "updated" flash visuals, gameloft dreck, angry birds ripoff....etc etc etc.

The mainline SMT games are some of the highest quality jrpgs. The spinoffs are good at best, but the main games are top tier.

i've been waiting a decade for a game like smtn, and nothing, including the spinoffs have filled that void.

I enjoyed Nocturne, but not to the point that I'm willing to pay a premium price (relative to the platform) for a new installment. In fact, the only people who are going to be willing to pay the premium for it are diehard fans of the series -- everybody else is going to pass on it in favor of something cheaper. This pricing is going to cause the SMT fanbase in the US to shrink and hurt the series in the long run. If you want to charge a premium for the game to appeal to the diehard fans without alienating everyone else, that's what (optional) Limited/Special Editions are for.

That is not true.

EDIT: By that I mean:

Code:
4	PS2	2003-02-20	1446	Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne	Atlus	7800	245,520
8	DS	2009-10-08	3731	Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey	Atlus	6279	136,149

My experience is anecdotal of course, but it seems like way more people are talking about megaten now than they were before P3 and P4 were released. But perhaps I am mistaken entirely - just trying to get a grasp of what the big deal is.

The situation is kinda like when you hear someone saying that they looooooove X artist only because they've heard his/her singles, while you know the artist's entire discography.

Ok, I have seen this in a LOT of communities.

I mean, I love Persona, all of it, Persona 1, Persona 2 Duology, Persona 3 FES, Persona 4 (Golden and Arena too), but I also love mainline SMT, 1 and 2 included, I wish If... was translated, and other megatens. Some people who start on Persona simply just don't want to play other megatens, while others do, different strokes for different folks.

I wish they were still experimenting with new spinoffs. It's nice that we got Devil Survivor this last generation, but I'd like to see new stuff. DDS was such a nice surprise.

I was one of those weirdos who got introduced to the series with Digital Devil Saga. The memories...

I do not comprehend.

Could you call Devil Summoner Raidou basically a new spinoff even though it shares the Devil Summoner name because of how different it is to the old ones?

Personally, Nocturne is a much better game than SMT1-2 and really a departure in term of quality. The dungeon design in these games was really... not on par with the rest of the series, or even most SNES games.

SJ on other hand had fantastic, fun dungeons.

The actual dungeon layouts in SMT3 are very much in spirit with the older games. It becomes more obvious if you try first-person mode in the game. But the graphics and sound design do add a whole extra dimension.

How essential are the PS2 Devil Summoner games? They're the only entries I'm missing from my MT PS2 collection. Are they mechanically similar to Soul Hackers, and do they stand up in quality to it?

I think they're garbage, personally. Bad SMT games. Bad action RPGs. Unremarkable music.

yeah, i started with persona 1 and 2 and have gravitated more towards the mainline/soul hackers/devil summoner[sat] stuff as time went on. i still love p3 and p4 but the gameplay has become so far removed and stripped down from what drew me to the series in the first place that i had to branch out. still,i don't really mind persona getting all the attention and higher end production values as long as they still make everything else and continue to localize them.

Raidou 1 was pretty bad, IMO, but Raidou 2 is a big improvement. I still have not finished Raidou 2 though, maybe one day.

The games have pretty decent music, I agree with that.

Raidou 1 is outright bad, huh? Guess I'll skip it.

Can anyone comment as to how they stand up with Soul Hackers - mechanically and in terms of quality? They're all under the Devil Summoner umbrella, are they not?

Raidou 1 has bad gameplay good story, Raidou 2 has good gameplay mediocre story.

You can't even compare Soul Hackers and the Raidou games, different genres basically.

Soul Hackers is more traditional SMT style.
Raidou is a 'action rpg'. It kind of feels like a more stilted Kingdom Hearts/DMC.

I'd much rather have Theatrhythm SMT

Oh god YES.

I don't even want to imagine what you'd have to break off of Mara to get a chance at his rare drops.

A wheel, get your mind out of the gutter!

For me, Nocturne was my first experience with SMT anything, then was followed by persona 3. I beat persona 3, didn't get halfway through Nocturne as I love story based RPGs, not dungeon crawls. Didn't keep me from buying Strange Journey and stopping for the same reason, probably won't stop me from buying this and, again, probably stopping for the same reason. :P

They really aren't much alike. They both have random battles, but Raidou's play out in action-RPG form while SH's are traditional turn-based. Thematically, they are both a little lighter than most of the main series fare, though thinking about the implications of Raidou 2's plotline still makes me throw up a little. Raidou 2 and Soul Hackers (especially the 3DS version) are quality games well worth your time.

Soul Hackers is beyond a done deal. As a sega nerd I wouldn't miss the first Saturn -> 3DS port even if it were Bug

and yes I know SH came out on PS1 but the series started on Saturn!!

Hmm. Is there anywhere I could go to spoil Raidou 2 for me? I don't see myself getting around to it due to time restraints and ,honestly, other games. It's been years since I played and forgot what happened for the most part. Last I remember I killed
Red Rider in a temple.

I haven't bought Raidou 1 (was expensive forever, might get it now), but 2 is great. Gameplay is really fun. I would love to see Atlus make another game in the series.

Well, speaking of Saturn ports, the 3DS version certainly doesn't hide its roots, as everything that's not 2D comes with some smeary textures and choppy framerate that admittedly put me off at first. But there's a great game under the muddy surface with a lot of charm and personality, also helped by the fact that Soul Hackers was one of the most accessible of the older games--now made more accessible.

Just realized that SMTIV comes 3 months after Soul Hackers. Hackers will probably last me a good month, so it means I'll only have to wait 2 months for even more SMT goodness.

It also helps that pretty much every asset from Raidou 1 was reused in Raidou 2 (which naturally added more locations/demons/etc, on top of actually being a good game), so it's not like you'll be missing much.

Hell, other than passively mentioning some Raidou 1 events, Raidou 2 almost doesn't feel like a continuation of 1 at all, storywise, despite having almost all the same characters.

I still prefer Raidou 1's story to 2's, but it's not worth slogging through it to experience first-hand as it's basically the only thing even potentially better than in 2. Nothing a wiki recap or LP can't solve!

Thanks for the input.

Next few months then...

1. Buy Soul Hackers
2. Finish Strange Journey
3. Buy Raidou 2
4. Finish Soul Hackers
5. Finish Raidou 2
6. Buy SMTIV
7. Slip into coma

I'd say playing Raidou 1 is worth it just to really appreciate all the improvements in the sequel.
Playing them one after the other was almost mindblowing, especially with the new fusion system.

Lmao, does Mara have any sort of background story?

http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Mara

Mara (マーラ, Maara) is a recurring entity in the series. Its design is a pun of sorts, as "Mara", in the Japanese language, is a colloquialism for "penis".

In Buddhist myth, Mara is also known as "The Evil One", a tempter, through the deceit of regarding the mundane and negative as alluring, and personifies unwholesome impulses, unskillfulness, and the "death" of the spiritual life.

Feeling threatened by the enlightenment the Buddha was trying to bestow upon humanity, he attacked Gautama Buddha when he was meditating beneath the boddhi tree. He was defeated when the Buddha simply touched the tips of his fingers to the earth, whereupon all the gods descended in a tremendous roar to pay homage to him. Though Mara was defeated that time, he still lingers in the world, hoping to seize the souls of the dying and unenlightened.

Originated in Sri Lankan Buddhism, a demon who was riding Girimehkala with a penis-headed image tried to stop Siddharta Gautama from reaching enlightenment through meditation. The most common story depicts Mara using his beautiful daughters in an attempt to tempt the Buddha; he later marched his demonic army to scare him, however this ended in failure for Mara.

Its manifestation in the Shin Megami Tensei series is likely a nod to the metaphor of Devaputra-mara, the disillusion of regarding Mara as an objective being.

I don't know, man. I keep wanting to replay SJ until I remember Eridanus. Then I'm all like "Nope".
