DriveClub (Evolution Studios/PS4) announcement trailer. [PS3 WHEELS ARE SUPPORTED]

according to the rumor, they tried to do this, but PD wouldn't allow it.

Kaz knows more about brand dilution than most it seems.

Makes total sense to try and start a new IP at the start of a generation, it's the time when people are most receptive and two strong brands are better than one for long term viability.

Besides if they are aiming for a different type of game (which I believe they are) which is more 'fantasy/dream car' focused as opposed to GT's (alleged) focus on real motorsport then it would make little sense. If MS released 'Forza: PGR' people would rightly be confused.

I'm thinking DriveClub will be more akin to Forza Horizon; in which case GranTurismo: DriveClub wouldn't be such a bad thing.

Drive Club is pitched as a socially conscious experience that encourages players to join clubs and compete with others. Although beating fellow racers on the road is at the core of competition, the race to complete challenges is what will really get players fired up.

"Challenges can be stringed together in tournaments, in everything from a short blast of super accessible gameplay to a really involving week-long combination of asynchronous and real-time multiplayer," Southern adds.

"As racing developers we always picture this spectrum with simulation at one end and arcade at the other and decide where we're going to sit. But this time we kind of said to ourselves 'let's try and view that as a very last-gen way of viewing the racing experience, let's view our next project as accessible and super fun but also extremely deep'.

"We've gone from full simulations of motorsport [in the WRC games] to balls-out arcade racing in Motorstorm, though always driven by complex physics, and we really want to try to combine that now into something new, and we really can't wait to show how that's going to play out."

"We talked a lot about the five pillars of the [PS4], and we worked on user stories that really tried to tie those pillars to the experience of every game; immediacy, social mechanics, accessibility, personalisation. So the controller can identify you based on the unique colours [of the light bar on the DualShock 4] and therefore log you in, and present streams of information relevant to you as a user.

Southern adds that other handy (cynics: gimmicky) new features of the PS4 system can be utilised in Drive Club.

"For example, being able to help a friend remotely and seamlessly from one living room to the next, take over someone's race, show them where they're going wrong, use post-race data to analyse where they were going right and wrong in more detail, and share the experience in that way," he says.

Although Southern was keen on emphasising the social nature of his game, he and the team at Evolution is aware of the importance of its most fundamental tasks. To ensure Drive Club performs when the tires hit the track, the studio has gathered people that have left their fingerprints on some of gaming's biggest race franchises.

"The handling team itself has been expanded massively now," explains Southern, "there's over 50 years combined experience in that team alone, not just with WRC and Motorstorm but Formula 1, WipEout and Project Gotham Racing, Gran Turismo and Tourist Trophy, Superbikes. These guys have made some awesome racing games and they're collaborating in a fantastic way to come up with something that hopefully sits in a new space."

During the on-stage demo Southern described two of Drive Club's in game car models by saying they're "as close as you'll get to the real thing in terms of detail and accuracy". We believe him.

"I think it's seven man months so it would take one person seven months [to build both cars]," he coolly explained.

"What's been exciting for us is... we knew that the game would have to look better than any other racer, but far more exciting was to come up with a different experience."

Spotted this in the CVG article earlier ... 3.5 months per car is pretty impressive opposed to the 6 single man-months each GT5 premium vehicle reportedly took.

I know some guys here hate old/prototype cars ..

but I want this to be in the game.

Mmmmh... Gotta love futuristic 80s-90s styling. This was also a look into the future of european Fords.

GT5 and 4 (and 3...) really shows how important art is in graphics. Drive Club is much better technically, but lacks any of the "OMG that shot looks real!" moments. GT4 also looked much better than the technically superior Forza 2 because the lightning and just art in general was horrid in Forza 2. Lot's of CG renders struggle to match the GT5 engine in bullshot mode (photomode and trailers).

The GT5 figure refers to cars being made by the team as a whole, not single-person. :(

I'm pretty sure it was a hazy translation and that it was actually 6 man months per vehicle ... I can't believe it would take the whole PD car modelling team 6 months to do just one car.

I am very interested in this game. but...

I would have loved it if this game improved on the faults of Test Drive unlimited 2 and used the idea of open world game, large map and a variety of vehicles(off road, types of cars) but I still think its very interesting and i am excited.

Just looking at this game and what their aim is, I can't help but think of it as a missed opportunity ( going on a cruise in game with your friends>>>> competitive group races, from my experience anyway, plus you could still add that with an open world game)

My dream game is basically TDU2 but with A LOT more improved physics, graphics, better aim ( less casino party/sims) and a very large collection of vehicles, sadly that seems not to be the case :(.

It seems to still have quite a few of those features though, which is awesome.

it's a beautiful looking car to this day(shame that the test prototype got a shitty cosworth engine instead of Jaguar XJ220 with 4 turbo as it was supposed to be).

Isn't Forza Horizon pretty much all that you are describing?

I'm pretty sure it was a hazy translation and that it was actually 6 man months per vehicle ... I can't believe it would take the whole PD car modelling team 6 months to do just one car.

I'm pretty sure they meant 6 months from nothing to a finished car. Meaning, taking, getting reference pictures. Getting sound. Modeling exterior, then interior. Rigging the car to work in game. Making sure the car handles the way it does in reality. Probably tons of back and forward work in this part. Each of these task would take a good chunk of time to do.

Basically there is a lot more to just modeling when building a car. I'd wager PD spend a shit ton of time just fine tuning the handling of every car, whereas obviously arcade racers would not.

That is my take from it anyway.

Isn't Forza Horizon pretty much all that you are describing?

Yes and no.

The map was not that good IMO, 8 max is a bit meh for such a game ( I love just racing against some random guy/girl too, mroe the merrier), not the best car selection and off roading/ just messing around in a car is not as fun as you experience in TDU ( doesn't feel as open, invisible boarders) and something about it while i play it doesn't feel that good

( I am probably THE ONLY PERSON you will ever hear this, but i preferred TDU 1/2 over horizon, except from the car physics)

I mean this is a dream game, aka not gonna happen.

Driveclub is NOT playing games. Look at the difference in Maserati logos.

GT wins that shot. Just look at how much smoother and more detailed the grill is.

The areas where Driveclub out does these models are obvious and it comes from being on PS4 hardware. Driveclub does look great, but Polyphony on PS4 is going to obliterate everything we previously thought possible. Driveclub is still going to be omg worth getting and it's not like a PS4 GT will be out anytime soon anyway.

I seriously do think that Sony should have called it Gran Turismo: Drive Club, though. It's a shame PD didn't let them.

The road marking around the corner is kinda low poly.
Just wanted to see if I am the only one that was amused by this statement.

Really? I suppose I could be biased by hype for next gen, but the Drive Club one seems to look marginally better. Either way, I agree. This makes me so pumped for what Polyphony are going to do. It's gonna look bonkers.

It's a shame this game is coming out just months after GRID 2, which is a very impressive game that straddles the sim/arcade line so well.

It would be even worse if Codemasters decides to do a next gen port of the game.

not really they do completely different things.

also that game don't even have a cockpit view,i'm not getting a racing game in 2013 with no cockpit view.

How are any of those things "gimmicky." All those features sound very helpful. And in the case of post-race data, that's what pro drivers do. Hardly a gimmick.

Sometimes games writers try way too hard...and need to realize that they just sound like assholes sometimes.

I was just thinking in Forza you have to do all those geometry shapes to make designs for your car right. With the PS4 Touchpad, could you just get a stylus or your finger to draw your cool designs? If this game allows it.

Just to be clear I'm not trying to be antagonistic or anything, it just cracked me up.

I didn't think so, it's true though! Road segments look unusually long for current gen let alone next gen, but all could change before release.

The other thing that caught my eye was two guys doing some weird synchronised hand signal thing in the Maseratti logo shot, I wasn't sure if that was deliberate or not.

The first GRID had a cockpit view. I think to the average consumer both games appear to offer similar things.

This game looks amazing. I'll be more than happy to pick it up in the launch window for a little next gen car porn.

launch is perfect for racing,360 launch for me was mostly PGR3 and on PS3 it was mostly RR7(and Motorstorm)

and I think racing games can do very well in launch/launch window.

Excited as hell for this

I would love if the physics model was more of a sim. I dream of having an open world racing game with sim like physics.

its not as fun if you can slide around a corner at 300mkh

The grilling is a detail, the rendering is simply much better in DC, hands down. They can add the 100 triangles for the grilling easy.

Evolution always stepped it up with engine sounds. I'm confident the engine sounds in the teaser are what will be used in game. The sound of the cars plus great music are what gets the adrenaline pumping in my opinion.

Seeing the gifs and screens for this really makes me wish I enjoyed racing games. They look so pretty but I can't drive for shit on a controller.

I don't know if this was posted but somebody made a nice trailer for Driveclub. Contains all the footage from the conference and trailer. Looks great. The little that is visible from the environments looks awesome.

Also, Evolution said somewhere in an interview that they might go back to doing another Motorstrom game at some point after Driveclub. I truly hope to see at least one Motorstorm game on PS4.

Looks awesome chopped together like that. After GT6 PS3 (which I'll still buy and love), my hype is further rising for DriveClub.

Thanks for that! Looks really impressive

Does anyone by any chance know the music from that fan made trailer?

I love the trailer. Gives a more complete picture of the game than Evo's teaser. The feeling of being in the car, the speed and the engine sounds are great.

I'm not a car racing gamer at all. Like, ZERO.

How does this game look for you car aficionado guys? Does it look like something that could be the next gt?

I couldn't care less about GT6 on PS3. In fact, a spiteful part of me wants it to fail. I'm still bitter over the fact it's going to be released on this crappy 7 year old hardware.

That would be really clever actually, with kinect i thought that would be one of the uses of the device in the game, with this pad someone could make a much more friendly version of Forza shape editor.

Any news about Ferrari o Lamborghini in this game?

Looks like the editor lowered the colour temperature (blue is much more pronounced) and added a slight chromatic aberration.

I hope this game attains both critical and commercial success. Also, "hope" that after another Motorstorm game is in the works that combines the best of all its predecessors.

I don't want it to fail, but I'll not buy GT6 on PS3 ( GT is my favorite Racing game) because PS3 will offer nothing new to improve GT6,the the limitations and issues we saw in GT5 will most likely be still there,GT5 clearly needed a better hardware.

but it's just sad that Kazunori Yamauchi ego is so big it will hurt GT and PlayStation brands.

So going by a picture posted by Paul Rustchynsky (@Rushy33) there will be a snowy mountain environment. Looking good!
