I can't imagine what its like for those people who were running their first marathons. My girlfriend is an active runner and she said she was very proud working up and completing her half-marathon so I imagine that people completing their first marathon would be huge to them as well.

The application of heat from the explosion wouldn't be long enough to cauterize. The blast, as seen, as akin to a tearing effect.

Two exploded on Boylston St, one exploded in the JFK library, a fourth was found under the grandstands by the finish (which would have killed a TON of people) but was defused by police using a water cannon.
