And dont forget the people of Boston who cooperated by following instructions and "staying indoors" allowing all those involved with the manhunt / investigation to do their jobs.

Really glad to see how the whole situation was handled.

And that AWESOME neighbor who spotted the blood trail on the tarp of the boat. My god, can you imagine if no one even bothered?

Probably been posted before but missed it. Imagine looking out your window and seeing this.

Sucks you can't respawn after being BUSTED

Nichols was at home when the bomb went off, which is the major reason why the jury was deadlocked on the death penalty.

Most problematic for the government was the compelling fact that Nichols was at home in Kansas when McVeigh detonated the truck.

They have video of this guy dropping the bag, if they pursue the death penalty, he's fucked.

True. Agreed on that.

LAPD can take a lesson from this.

My theory from what CBS said about his brother and him.

Dead brother was a normal, charismatic guy according to a boxer who trained with him. For some reason he said in like '09 he started to get more reclusive and religious. He probably self brainwashed himself for whatever reason. To be a part of a 'bigger cause' or something apparently. He seemed to be isolated.

Little brother supposedly emailed one of his professors a couple years ago asking for more info on his Chechan roots. Got easily brainwashed by his brother.

These guys don't seem like lifelong US hating terrorists. They lived a normal life in the US. For whatever reason, some people just have fucked up notions in their head. Everyone gets depressed and annoyed with life, and most people handle it in typical normal ways. These guys didn't.

I think that's going to be the end answer, like with every mass murderer. Something just falls apart in these guys heads that don't for basically every other person.

Um the blind sheikh mastermind of the 1998 WTF bombing is rotting in federal prison as we speak, there is a precedent for this.

Honestly, I think death is too easy an out. I was really disappointed that the older brother died.

At 19 and 26, these guys would get a lifetime without freedom and live the rest of their lives and die in a concrete cell.

His family that didnt help investigators need to be deported.. gah i don't really think that and I know that's extreme but fuck that makes me angry.

Turning in family members is a very difficult thing to do. Especially if you think you might be mistaken, no one wants to be responsible for getting an innocent family member arrested or killed. I really don't think it's something you should blame people for.

FOX News actually did a good job on reporting about the boat incident earlier tonight, but I found Geraldo Rivera's and Bill O'Reilly's speculation about "homegrown Islamic terrorists" troubling. Especially when they forgot about the many homegrown American terrorists like Timothy McVeigh, Adam Lanza, Jared Loughner, and James Holmes.

I know, i agree. I was just being brash.

Out of all the forums and social media, GAF was the place to be during this entire ordeal not only for updates but the cordial and mature comments.

gets perma banned next week after stepping in gaming

I wish everyone was like this. :/ but gaf was a good source of updates ignoring the asshats.

Aren't the delusional ones already out of the country? The sister's still here, but she didn't make any claims in the short interview I saw.

Between the total psycho terrorists and the bloodlust in return, all I think when I see this thread and all the other somewhat recent violences... is... that I wish I could be a kid again. I'm sick of all this shit.

When they started speculating about how the family got over here is when I changed the channel.

Eh, I feel no shame.

better this thread than "which video game character has the worst face graphics" or "whats your weirdest fetish" or whatever.

Thanks to everyone who posted a lot who kept the information coming. This was a pretty great resource for news and discussion, especially considering the alternatives.

I'm so confused. Obama gave his address already? I can't find any video or news about it anywhere. But people were posting about comments Obama made, like the internet detective stuff.

I think the older brother may have been the super radical one. But also a bit of a hypocrite like many religiously righteous tend to be... Since he seemed to enjoy partying and other aspects of Western life.

Wiki does a good job explaining the situation.

In assessing why Nichols was not convicted of first degree murder, the Washington Post noted:
"There was no evidence that Nichols had rented the Ryder truck used to carry the bomb to Oklahoma City, and there was no one who could positively identify him as the purchaser of the two tons of ammonium nitrate, the major component in the bomb. Most problematic for the government was the compelling fact that Nichols was at home in Kansas when McVeigh detonated the truck."
—Lois Romano and Tom Kenworthy (December 24, 1997), [32]
Another theory is that some members of the jury believed Nichols's attorneys' arguments that he had withdrawn from the conspiracy before the bombing.[27] His apparent remorse as shown by his crying several times during the testimony could also have swayed the jury.[27]
After the penalty hearing concluded, the jury deliberated for 13 hours over two days on whether to give Nichols the death penalty but was deadlocked.[10] U.S. District Court Judge Richard P. Matsch then had the option of giving Nichols life in prison with or without the possibility of parole. He sentenced Nichols to life in prison without parole, calling Nichols "an enemy of the Constitution" who had conspired to destroy everything the Constitution protects. Nichols showed no emotion.[7] He was sent to the Federal Supermax Prison in Florence, Colorado.[33] On February 26, 1999, a federal appeals court affirmed Nichols' conviction and sentence.[4]

I'm expecting a similar thing myself. These actions are random and don't fit their personalities that friends and family described.

Sad the elder brother leaves behind a wife and a 3yr old daughter.

What's with the Miranda rights discussion? Are people actually worried he is gonna walk like this is Dirty Harry or something?

No, it's just a question of how the case ought to be handled according to the constitution and the aggregate impact on his case and future cases. Not an impact like a conviction is unlikely but more civil liberties stuff.
