Which is odd because guns didn't really play much of a prominent role in this whole thing...explosives did.
Good point. Makes no sense :lol

So much weird bullshit any time a public tragedy like this takes place. I know I shouldn't be surprised by that at this point, but it never ceases to amaze me when I see it.

Democracy is not an absolute. Free speech is one of the most important parts of democracy, Turkey not having free speech makes its democracy very very weak.
Turkey treats its citizens differently based on their etnicity, religion and nationality, also something that does not belong in a democracy.

Though my standards on what is a democracy is quite high. I do not see Thailand as a true democracy either.

Russia
Speech has always been limited in the US as well. Look up Eugene Devs when you get a chance.

To be fair that gate looks hella locked, and those guys are probably operating on very little sleep.

And having jumped many a spiked fence as part of my pizza delivery duties, there no way to surmount one of those without looking like a total geek.

Explosives didn't kill and wound cops and it looks like they were heavily armed with guns. Which could have been used the day they set off the bombs had they cared less for their own lives.

The conspiracy theories don't really fit with this one at all. The fact that the bombers were Muslim immigrants who used homemade bombs is terrible politically for this administration. It doesn't do anything for gun control and it means that immigration legislation, previously in good shape, is now in peril. Also, the fact that they allowed him to be captured alive nullifies any 'patsy' claims.

The conspiracy theorists were just latching onto the possibility that the bomber was going to be a Tea Partier and are doubling down on the crazy now that the evidence contradicts their claims.

I don't see this blowing back at all politically on the administration honestly. While Muslim, they were also Caucasian, literally. And more importantly, United States citizens.

It also doesn't change anything on immigration. They weren't Mexican and Republicans will never stand a chance at claiming the presidency if they continue their obstruction on the issue.(though you could argue they are fucked either way)

This really is the picture that matters most, and it's the one people should be posting instead of the suspects.

This picture just goes to show you for varied the people in the USA are. While their families will never recover, I hope they are at least at peace with the perpetrator caught.

Maybe I was a bit overboard with 'terrible', but it doesn't help any administration aims and if anything hinders them. I do think you're wrong about immigration. Conservatives will definitely use this as a talking point to badmouth immigration reform. It might not sink the bill, but I wouldn't be surprised if it weakened Republican support for it.

The conspiracies on this one have been pretty juicy.

There's one I keep seeing floated around, especially on YouTube, that all seems to be the same idea. Basically that this is going to somehow be tied into guns and the NRA? And that the government will use this as an excuse to take everyone's guns. Or something to that nature. I've been unable to sleep with all of this stuff going on, so I've been watching a bunhc of random videos and articles about it and I keep seeing that sort of sentiment.

Doesn't make much sense to me since didn't the Senate strike down something from Obama's gun bill like two days ago? Something to do with background checks I think?
My favorite has the JFK Library fire being directly tied to the attack...and the perp being none other than *dun dun dun* the son of Osama Bin Laden.

I saw the interview with Ruslan on The Today Show. I feel that we're quite fortunate to have someone who is so honest about the radicalization of these two suspects. It is quite different from what we see here in Indonesia when radical Muslims decide to kill innocent civilians. Their friends and family will almost never admit the simple fact that they were radicalized, choosing instead to believe in some insane conspiracy even in spite of often overwhelming evidence that they were followers of radical imams.

You know, I really wonder about people, on what's suppose to be a real night of celebration because there's a chance that those innocent people that suffered at the hands of these assholes will have justice, and we are seriously arguing over what is one of the finest ever displays in our country's history of the police and law enforcement, both at the local and federal level, and average, everyday people coming together and cooperating and working as a team to make sure the people who attacked us were not allowed to get away with it? No rights were violated here, there was nothing about how this was handled that should, in anyway, alarm or concern anybody.

People literally gave their lives to bring this guy down.

Not only will those people have justice and our entire country will have justice, but a very clear message was sent the world over that we will not be intimidated and we will not live in fear. There were people in other countries celebrating this, radicals on foreign websites bragging about how they have us in fear. They thought they accomplished something, when in reality all they did was set the stage for all of us to show them, just like we always do, that all it does is make us stronger and bring us closer together, and it has a funny way of coming back to bite them and their cause in the ass.

Beautiful post.

For bring a supposed Islamic Extremist...the younger one sure seemed to like partying, drinking and smoking weed. Odd.

I have a theory that he was at the very least heavily influenced/brainwashed by his brother and perhaps even thought/was convinced that the bag he was dropping had something other than a bomb in it, say drugs. Which would explain the tweets after the bombing and why he appears to have gone on living his life in the days following. He may have only found out what he had really done when the photos were released by the FBI.

I realize that's relatively unlikely and I don't expect it to be the truth, but all accounts of this kid by those who knew him don't paint the portrait of a terrorist. So I think the idea that he was duped by his brother or even others, could ring true.

Or I could be completely off base and he's a classic case. I guess we'll see.

The FBI agent in the jacket clearly pushes the gate open.

Physics, how do they work?

Will be interesting to see what info comes out of this investigation. Anyone who thinks this was planned by the Gov. needs serious mental help. I'm not too fond of them.. but really?

Bad influences and a messed-up worldview can make people do horrible things. Part of me hopes the kid comes to his senses because he seems like he would have been normal aside from corrupting forces, just based on what I felt from reading his Twitter history.

Some of the terrorists behind the 11S and the Madrid train bombings were pretty sleazy guys. Then, at some point in their empty lives (I think this is the most important part), some charismatic figure shows up and turns them forever.

It's certainly interesting. I wonder if he was either brainwashed by his older, more radicalised brother (if the reports are accurate) or felt pressured into it by said brother.

His actions seem somewhat odd for a radicalised individual, allowing his capture when his brother reportedly had a suicide vest, abandoning his brother, etc. All suggests (although it may be too early to speculate with any certainty) that he isn't actually radicalised as his brother allegedly may have been.

There's a photo of him walking off quietly after the bomb went off. He knew what he was doing.

edit: this one:

White can be varied, you have your Scottish, your Spaniards, Asians, people from Northern states etc...

Exactly. Europe spent centuries fighting each other (and they were all white). Dismissing that and saying the US is homogenous because everyone is white kind of lets other countries off hook. Most of those white people (that make up the majority) came to the US to avoid horrible oppression in their old countries.

For all the hate the US gets, and it's certainly not perfect by any imagination, no other country has been a melting pot like this. It's FAR from perfect, but it's still a better example than any other country.
