Bloomberg: Nintendo to announce 18.7 Billion Yen loss for the fiscal year

I would still find it amazing for 3D Mario or Mario Kart to make it this Fall. I'm sure Nintendo has some type of emergency plan for one of them this Holiday season. But I'm very interested in seeing how they make this deadline on a big budget HD entry to a mammoth intellectual property.

Nintendo has to be delaying Wii Fit Plus for dear life, because it would be sent out to die right now. Unfortunately, with Game & Wario, Pikmin 3, and The Wonderful 101. I see three straight bombs. Well Pikmin should do ok. Maybe. Not a million seller by any means.

Mario Kart is certainly the easier proposition, and would be a game that can be very easily patched up after release and added to with DLC.

What if they make Iwata step down* BUT he gets to still be in charge of 3DS projects, while someone else takes on the Wii U's already sinking ship? Sounds crazy, and it's way more easy said than done, but I would be ok with it.

*I know that won't happen, not until next FY, at least.

Prepare to be amazed.

You may have a point with online, but that's much better now with eShop and miiverse.

I don't really see any merit in the rest of your post.

Games I usually like have been made worse because of Nintendo's overreliance on gimmicks to sell their consoles. Phantom Hourglass used a stupid control scheme just to show it could be done. DKCR had awful waggle controls because they tried to justify the controller in some way. Skyward Sword had awful combat because it was designed around simplistic movements with the Wiimote.

Mario Galaxy was great because it didn't pander to this kind of nonsense. But too many Nintendo games do.

Hasn't that been in development for 2+ years?

Nintendo has enough of a war chest to handle these types of losses for decades, no? Maybe I'm missing the big deal here. Companies, especially lately in this industry, frequently post losses. It's only been in the last two or so years that Nintendo has been posting similar losses, even if they're low scale compared to other companies.

The idea of a loss leader is to build install base and consumer excitement. The Wii U is building neither. This leaves it in a position like the launch PS3 or OG Xbox, a doomed stopgap there to keep your inhouse expertise on payroll until you can launch a successor.

Nintendo investors are also unused to the loss leader model, may have invested in Nintendo specifically to avoid it, and Nintendo's complete reliance on gaming means that it's a far riskier bet than, say, MS's potential of having another Xbox-scale bomba and only making $24 billion a year off of Windows/Office rather than $25 billion.

So many people can't read or jump to conclusions. While it is possible Iwata could get the boot tomorrow it's unlikely and going by his own statement he has until next year to make up for it.

I hope he stays just to piss you guys off more.
A CEO doesn't really typically get to decide he has a year to try and fix problems that have accumulated under their leadership. They serve at the pleasure of the board. Although I recall reading Yamauchi still has huge influence over said board, despite retirement, and as his hand-picked successor he'll probably have this opportunity to try at least.
Dear Iwata

ByeBitch.gif
This literally made me LOL.

Where did Iwata even flat out say he'd quit if he doesn't meet the 100 B yen thing anyways?

Something was implied, but he didn't flat out say he'd resign.

Maybe now they'll realize that maybe people don't want yet another mario-related game. Or that releasing a sub-par console that will turn off third party developers is stupid. Then again I haven't really enjoyed much nintendo games (except smash bro's) so I don't mind seeing them go down.

He did said he may resign if Nintendo didn't manage to achieve 100 billion yen in operating income for the fiscal year.

Yeah, he's aware... he's talking about people saying the guy would kill himself.

... are you seriously comparing that to wishing Iwata dead?

No, I'd already collected the posts because someone wanted to see instances of genuine aggression towards Iwata.

Well, someone posted a seppuku picture in this thread. Are they still here?

I don't know what the second one means but the first one was quite revolting; which is why I chose not to quote it. Interpret as you like ofc, but its bad taste at best.

See above, children. Revolting? The net must be a scary place for you if jests are revolting.

...

I definitely am more bullish for Nintendo going into E3 and the rest of the year but right now the company is in a precarious position. Again, having a couple Mario IP's, a Zelda, and any other surprises will definitely help but Nintendo in reality has squandered six crucial months when they should have been capitalizing BIG time on the Wii U being the sole 'next gen' console.

Maybe i'm just giving them the benefit of the doubt, but I just kinda assumed that they were going to do what the did with the 3DS. I don't think it was intentional that they had the drought they did, but I was under the assumption that they launched a little earlier to use the breathing room to find a better ground, then maximize on that and build before the others hit to ride momentum into that storm. I totally see where you're coming from though.

Whether or not this is even a good choice is pretty easy to see, but I figured i'd wait till E3 till I start calling things out.

The picture seems an in bad taste to the suicide watch meme, I'd hardly equate it to people literally wanting Iwata to kill himself... :/

Of course, perspective is easily blurred when one holds misplaced affection towards a public figure.

This is positive news people.

Nintendo revised their FY forecast in Q3 for -20by FY oic, and these analyst are expecting a -18.7by FY oic.

So Nintendo is expected to loss less even with slow Wii U sales and delayed games. People need to learn to read.

I think one side is taking this situation way more seriously than the other...

You know what, you're absolutely right. That line of argument is ridiculous, no idea why I pursued it. Moving on.

For the record, I agree the company needs some sort of aggressive shake-up, CEO change or no.

Might want to calm down and stop trying to shame people into getting banned.

Also, that Pocahontas gif had me weak.

Posting a loss is never good, regardless of what the company expected.

The jest is taking suicide - a horrendous form of passing anyway - and a very painful form of suicide and putting it in a horrible image whilst 'jesting' if someone wanted the short or long sword.

Your post was in bad taste and vulgar. It certainly wasn't humorous, you missed out the joke and wit.

HD transition has been tough for Nintendo.

It's interesting because the Wii was pyrrhic victory for Nintendo. The sacrificed tech, which put them behind the curve of Sony/MS for yet another console generation.

Nonsense.

The joke is the ridiculousness of killing yourself over failing to meet expectations [especially when it involves video games!], that seems to be an idea quite commonly associated with Japan. Poor taste, sure, but I see avatars that are worse imo. Only offensive enough to warrant a ban if you are tyrannically pro-nintendo, but let's see.

I certainly don't want him banned. I wasn't offended by the image, but there have been implications made in other threads that didn't seem in jest at all. I'd search for them but I'm on my phone and am trying to get my kid to bed.

We disagree.

Lovely. Humor is subjective.

You're probably wasting your time. It's evident, but he's "revolted" by a cartoon.

Yeah married man and dad Satoru Iwata should kill himself because the Wii U is selling poorly. Makes sense.

A lot of people are joking but it's a fucking sick joke.

Here's another one that cannot suss out sarcasm.
