No, I'd say the harm is based on whether it causes dissonance with the game or context. If there is no dissonance with those then the only impact is aesthetic.

So now you're saying the game itself, and the context of the representation does matter, or else it's harmful to the quality of the game. This is totally different than what you were originally suggesting, and what others were saying--that's it's purely an aesthetic choice.

Just catching up with this Dragons Crown stuff. I've got to say these attacks on gaming as a whole are getting ridiculous. We went from gory violence at E3 last year to the horror of the objectification of virtual women.

Yeah, both subjects are elements that exist in videogames. NEITHER of them change the value of gaming as a medium. The existence of The Human Centipede or A Serbian Film doesn't devalue film as a medium.

These weird sensitivities and issues of the quarter are inventions of writers with nothing to write about. If you find the Dragons Crown art ridiculous then ignore it. It is the style of the artist and the creation of the art team. It stands for the type of product that they wanted to make. That is fine and is up to them, if it doesn't appeal to you then move on and find something that does. Anything else is bordering on censorship. I don't think people are soo upset that Frazetta and Sorayama painted all kinds of erotic fantasy imagery, and their paintings didn't devalue the brush and canvas.

Besides, when it comes to film people were begging for a return to 80s gun violence films like Commando, just like there was a small resurgence in 80s style titty movies a few years back. There is a market for this stuff and I don't think it is creatively healthy for a game team to start a project with a list of stuff they shouldn't do so as to not raise the ire of games journalists.

What's wrong with being sexy?

I want you to know I appreciated this post.

I guess maybe this article was already posted, but instead of focusing on some "titties", that some 14-year-old (or however jason put it) thought of, I think this article shows, that its not just some "male-fantasy", but the whole artstyle just borrows from old paintings, movies/comics and so on and should be more seen as a homage:

http://art-eater.com/2013/03/from-m...ragons-crown-trailer-is-full-of-epic-homages/

I also dont really think that the sorceress was made with such proportions to made some teenagers drool. I mean, I could understand if the whole artstyle was more like the typical Anime-Artstyle, but it seems much more that it is really more a homage of the old 80s movies/comics.
But thats just what I think.

(To the whole topic itself, somehow I think people get too offended lately by every little thing. I wonder if every character in a new game, that shows some breasts is now a sexist character.)

The question is, should they be in the majority of games, and should such depictions essentially be the default within the medium? Few mainstream movies take their cues from The Human Centipede, but there are innumerable examples of downright embarrassing character designs and characterizations in gaming, even in good games, not to mention gratuitous violence. Conversations about, for example, whether killing should be the main verb or way of interacting with the world in the medium are a natural consequence of gaming becoming a large, mainstream entertainment vector, with gamers ranging from a wide variety of age ranges, social experiences, genders, races, etc, bringing their experiences and thoughts with them.

Chairmanchuck: why do you think some of those influences aren't also playing off of "male fantasies?" Conan for example? Frank Frazetta? Anyway, this conversation never goes anywhere, it's just Feminism 101 a million times. We should just drop it until the next example, which will be continuously forthcoming.

There's just as much gratuitous violence in movies, more actually.

This game isn't a good example of any argument against the current representations of women in gaming and the issues that keep us alienated. It's not even low hanging fruit at this point, it's been targeted because some character in the game has huge tits. In trying to establish a systematic problem within gaming they ironically did so in a manner that actually makes me feel more alienated than some niche rpg character's tits could ever manage to. Our opinions only seem to matter when they prop up whatever agenda some jerk has set out, otherwise we don't even know what's good for ourselves. It's an obvious sensationalist ploy for hits using "sexism" as a smoke screen. Fuck Kotaku.

I'm in the market for a digital recorder. I'm tired of using my phone and an old tape recorder as my means to record conversations, etc.

What do you guys use?

What do you expect? When you start making ad hominem accusations that someone is 14 years old, instead of attcking the content of their design decisions, you show a complete lack of integrity and professionalism as a journalist.

He deserves more scrutiny than he's gotten. I saw him posting just the other day about how his "snarky little trailer post" was still generating discussion. To be that unprofessional, that offensive, and to just call it ... snarky ...

He still doesn't get it.

I don't really know what Kuchera is doing here. What is he complaining about? Fans tipping him about something that seems to be interesting? The Developers for... not being able to control their fans? The Fans for not being a connected Hive mind so they know who sent how many mails to how many outlets?

Also usual dickishness of him in the comments.

I don't know why anyone reads that site honestly. Wow.

I find it funny that he supported Kotaku's uninformed defense of Susan Wilson's extremely shady kickstarter campaign where she spammed hundreds of celebrities, tech blogs and women groups on twitter.

(several dickish posts from him in the comments)
Ben Kuchera said:
You can say she spammed writers and personalities for coverage, and that's also accurate, but the difference between her and many of the projects I cover is that she didn't hire a PR team to spam people directly.

This is a little off-topic and little LTTP, but whatever happened to the whole New Games Journalism ethos, did that die a death or what? I just read the "Manifesto" and it seemed pretty interesting.

I popped open my e-mail this morning to see the CU update from Mark about Kuchera, having had no idea about this campaign (I didn't read the comments on the KS) read the article, and laughed. A tantrum over the 2013 equivalent of a letter writing campaign.

One of my favourite parts is when he more or less says "we would probably have covered it, except not, because you 'spammed' us with e-mail" through his article, and then goes on to say (in the comments) something along the lines of "I had no intention of covering this Kickstarter because it doesn't interest me".

Then I scroll down and see he's getting people banned from the comments. A+

I guess he knows how the rest of the world felt in the final days of Republique's kickstarter. I can't recall if he said anything about it but wow was the press giving people the hard sell on that game

Wow, he's mad that people asked him to do his job.

That's some egotistical 'do not DARE offend the gatekeepers' article right there.

Microsoft moneyhatted the CoD gameplay premiere to be at the Xbox 3 reveal, indicating that some kind of exclusive bullshit has continued.

They've done a demo at Microsoft's press conference nearly every year since 2007. I'm not that surprised there's going to be another one this year.

If I lived opposite China's state-run newspaper building I'd never stop looking out of the window.

On the plus side, my computer would be at a greatly reduced risk of viruses.

yes. kotaku is the "gamers guide", right?

Most of the time, sure. But every weekday from 4am-8am eastern we run a section called Kotaku East, where our writers in China and Japan publish articles about culture in their respective countries. If you don't care about that, it's pretty easy to skip over articles posted then.

Hah! I'd bet it would sink into your subconscious just seeing it everyday without realizing it.

Dreaming of giant dongs and being confused, seeing them when you close your eyes....

If you don't already like I do that is.

This made me so fucking angry to read.
It's obvious that Ben Kuchera has completely lost basis with reality and has no perspective on what it means to be a journalist, anymore.

I've never even heard of the project, but I'm happy to see that it is sitting right now as I type this at $2,246,581 pledged of $2,000,000 goal with 12 minutes remaining.

Good on them, congratulations and I hope their game is awesome.

I don't want to sound like I'm on a holy crusade for journalistic integrity, but a story recently published on the website I volunteer for, comes off as an advertisement for a controller add-on product. It's especially suspect because the owner of the site is the author of the story. It's pretty dirty and I don't feel comfortable associating my name with that website.

bail.

I most certainly am. I not sure how to handle it since I'm just volunteering. Should I send an email to him, that's general in tone saying I'm not going to be able to write for the site or explain my discomfort for the ads-as-stories that he writes?

Tell them. Tell them or they won't get the message.

Okay. Thanks so much guys. I really do appreciate the feedback.
Some career advice dude - you've given us your real name, you've told us the publication you volunteer for and I'm pretty sure this is the article in question.

Good on you for having some integrity (especially if you're working for free, you want to be donating that time to a publication you can be proud to put on your CV), but if you're serious about being a writer, you'll also need some discretion. Speculating about the shadiness of your 'employer' on a public message board where you've given up your anonymity isn't the best way to begin your writing career - especially before you've even raised the issue internally.

I'm not saying you should keep quiet and be a good ol' boy, but at the same time future employers are going to be hesitant to hire you if they think you're someone who'll publicly bash them the moment you suspect something isn't quite aboveboard.

GAF isn't some tiny little private community, a lot of editors (read: your future employers) pay very close attention to it.

I've been trying to work on that over the past few months. I know that my behavior here has the ability to leak out and have editors question me as a future writer. It's something I'll continually have to work on.

It's stressed me out, especially when these implications are brought up. I've thought about this a lot over the past week. This incident and the many times I've brought up my personal life on GAF since some stuff went down last year are not something that needs to be seen by everyone. Going forward, I need to continue to finding other outlets to voice my opinions or keep'em between close friends and I.
