Nintendo ditches main E3 conference, still there with games, press events, N-Direct

This sucks, indulging in a needless show is one of the reasons I love these conferences. It will probably get a Nintendo Direct which will lack the element of live tweeting, confusion and crowd reactions.

I WANT MY CROWD REACTIONS GOD FUCKING DAMN IT!

At the end of the day I'm still gonna get to see the new Smash and etc., so I'm still excited. Though it would have been nice to see a reaction as strong as the Zelda TP trailer at least one more time.

If this new way of doing things is successful I expect MS and Sony to try their hand at it eventually too. Might really change E3 as we know it. Which is kinda sad IMO.

No Nintendo Direct has as many eyes on it as their e3 presentation. Period.

This is a move generated by having very little to reveal at e3, especially compared to the competition.

I'm cool with a Direct filled to the brim with megatons but I still want a crowd roaring moment from them that tops the Twilight Princess reveal.

This is actually *really* smart. They're going to target to each audience, which is overdue considering how many bad E3 presentations there have been from various companies in the last several years.

I would expect:

- Nintendo Directs for all regions first, with any game announcements/release dates, etc. This basically replaces the E3 conference and cuts out all the lifestyle/sales/vision things that gamers don't care about. It's pretaped by Nintendo, so they don't have to worry about the demos messing up or various conference gaffes or boring people.
- Gaming press event where they get to try all the game demos without having to wait in line for hours to play. I'm sure this could be tailored to some extent to the site (i.e., USA Today is more interested in the casual games, while IGN gets more time with the big core titles).
- Distributors closed-door event where they talk about sales/vision/etc

The Nintendo Directs really feel like mini versions of E3 press conferences that are delivered almost each month. I don't mind that decision. With Sony and Microsoft showing their next-gen machines, Nintendo will look bleek anyway.

Wonder if this is about financials though, saving money on not making a big show at E3 this year.

Way to market to those people that aren't aware of or don't know if they want your new console.

Just looks like they're scared of the next gen machines.

Keep telling yourself that, bud. Advertise it as a steamed E3 Conference or a Nintendo Direct. Whatever. Why would people watch an E3 conference but not a Nintendo Direct that filled more or less the same purpose?

Look at how many views their Directs have on YouTube.

Their e3 conferences are in the mainstream news. Directs aren't.

Well, it's not like I've understood the actions of Nintendo lately... I guess it's best continuing to sit back and see if they sink or swim.

This news combined with the recent CVG + Emily (don't count Nintendo out, they will have a good E3) has me intrigued and confused.

No E3 press conference but good E3 nevertheless, plus "new ways to reach to users". I am really inclining to demos on the eshop. That would certainly eclipse not having a press conference for me, as much as I love them.

Horrible move in my opinion, seeing as how they need to build excitement for their d.o.a. system. Nintendo directs are for the hardcore fans and just not good enough for what they need. Bad, bad move.

Completely agree about the diminishing returns on Nintendo Direct. I obviously don't have market data to back it up, but the way Nintendo handles them sometimes is quite baffling. I have no reason to believe people who do not own are Wii U are, in droves, watching Wii U related Nintendo Directs to see if they want the system. They already don't care. The people who watch already own the platform, and are interested in the games.

Granted, the reasoning behind Nintendo Directs could be that they're just a fancy pants version of a press release. Yes, they appeal almost exclusively to platform owners, but people will still report the news, tell others, post threads, and so on. They might be thinking of Nintendo Direct as a viral kind of thing.

And honestly, as long as they're holding press related events at E3 (which it seems they are), I guess they're filling the purpose of the single conference incrementally.

Pretty much my response.

Well im glad i didnt spend over 1000 to get in to e3 since all consoles will be announced and shown before E3 and nintendo not showing anything at E3 is a waste of money

I can wait to play new video games.

man it sure sucks that there won't be any kind of event for the press and no games announced and thus nintendo will get no press at all because iwata is scared of the xbox because of his childhood relationship with his mother

Nintendo Directs are really great, I love them, but a previously recorded conference/presentation will never top a live event with audience, imo. :(
I'd like this if there was a real audience, not the supposed to be objective but acting like children journalists that are only allowed in anyway.

You should write the plots of Metal Gear Solid games.

Last year's 3DS XL Direct a month after E3 showed that Nintendo really doesn't care about the event anymore.

Actually Nintendo was the only one still revealing consoles at E3 before that.

Their e3 conferences are in the mainstream news. Directs aren't.

The Directs weren't held during E3 as proxy conferences.

For shows that get 12 hours of notice, at least the Japanese ones, do respectable numbers between 60K and 120K.

Exactly. This is why people need to stop losing their minds and saying this a negative. The E3 stage presentation is just one aspect of E3. Nintendo has done wonders with their Nintendo Directs. Look at how crazy NeoGaf gets on those days. The first two pages are usually filled with Nintendo threads for a good part of the day. The same thing happen with Sony's PS4 unveiling. Same will happen with Microsoft and the new Xbox. Gaming sites always report on the directs as well. That stage show isn't needed.

I'm not sure why people are acting like retailer/distributor events are a new thing? Microsoft holds/use to hold(?) an annual event and Sony has Destination PlayStation, and I assumed Nintendo already had their own as well.

With regard to Nintendo Directs - they simply cater to an audience already bought into the ecosystem, as EatChildren outlined above. They don't really replace E3.

Which essentially means that rather than holding an E3 presser they're simply breaking it down into lots of little events - and that just begs the question - why? what's the point? As I asked earlier, doesn't it just make it harder for people to cover your news?

Those numbers are pitiful.

Look how many views the ps4 unveil trailer has in comparison.

But I guess it's a good idea to have a Nintendo Direct for your 100k fans that ready own a Wii U while the rest of the world continues to ignore it.

Everyone who is wise enough to log on for a fucking E3 conference on the internet is smart enough to stream Nintendo's E3 press direct. The name doesnt matter, people know what it is.

Have you simply ignored how much information has been revealed through directs alone, just this year? Saying they have nothing to show based on nothing and how they are choosing to present it is stupid.

For fuck sake, do any of you think before you post? Do you think internet forum hype levels actually mean shit? Wake up.

I changed the thread title because as much as people should read the OP, I know full well many won't, and will instead throw a fit that Nintendo has apparently chosen to skip E3 entire and cancel all Wii U games, in order to better spend their days sitting around jerking each other off.

Eh, I find this very disappointing. The conferences are the funnest part of E3 for us, and I always looked forward to Nintendo's the most.

I honestly don't think I've ever sit through an entire Nintendo Direct. They're no substitute for that E3 hype.

nintendo is done making videogames????? :O

"we will hold another closed hands-on experience event, for mainly the Western gaming media"

They damn well better have Mario/Kart on the floor or I am going to be woefully disappointed. Hands on with NintendoLand at E3 last year is what sold me on the WiiU.

Nintendo is intimidated, they know MS and Sony are pulling out the big guns for this conference, full of great third party titles and new hardware. Nintendo will have NEITHER of these things to show, particularly for the Wii U, so they are chosing to just opt-out... that is how I'm interpreting this, no matter how they spin it. The 3DS may be enjoying a period of prosperity but these are still dark times for Nintendo >.> Iwata becoming NOA CEO is not a good thing either in my eyes. It will only bring further disconnect between what American gamers want and what those of japan do.
