Nintendo ditches main E3 conference, still there with games, press events, N-Direct

There's nothing like that in the post you quoted, people seriously need to stop "interpreting" things and just reading what they say...

All that was in that post was about Nintendo having press events and games on the showfloor which means that of course they will be covered by and played by the press, that they're there for, since E3 is just for the press.

ah sorry about this.

New games/apps that have been announced in ND's in 2013:

Pokemon XY
Yarn Yoshi
Wii Party U
Wind Waker HD
LttP 2
Yoshi's Island 3DS
Dillion's Rolling Western 2
Mario VS Donkey Kong: Mini's on the Move
Mario Party 3DS
New Super Luigi (DLC)
Mario & Luigi RPG 4
Mario Golf
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D
"X"
FE X SMT
Wii Street U

This is an incredibly smart move on Nintendo's part.

Don't get me wrong; PERSONALLY I'm disappointed as all hell that there'll be no Nintendo conference this year, because I enjoy the hell out of them, especially considering that I get to go to them.

But Nintendo Direct has proven to be an incredibly successful, smart method of news delivery for them, as it allows the company to deliver their announcements and news straight from the source without giving the anti-Nintendo "games media" and their "game journalists" (terms I use very loosely) the chance to negatively skew their announcements. It's quite genius, honestly.

The only potential weakness I can see with Nintendo Direct becoming Nintendo's main method of news delivery for E3 is that the audience is more or less limited to existing Nintendo fans; non-fans aren't going to tune in and won't get the news until game journalists have had a chance to skew it. But then again, wouldn't that be the case without Nintendo Direct anyway? This just lets Nintendo trim the fat and at least reach their audience more effectively, and saves them TONS of money in conference costs in the process.

Again, smart move.

During the past few months Nintendo's announced stuff like two Zelda games, Pokemon X & Y, a new Yoshi's Island, Monlith Soft's X, SMT x Fire Emblem, etc. via Directs.

In the past Nintendo would've saved all of those for E3.

I don't see the point in this. I mean, yes, the Directs have all been awesome. Extremely informative, tons of exciting news that has me beyond hyped to own a 3DS due to the sheer amount of games they've announced for it, but wouldn't E3 have been a much more exciting venue to announce these games? Waiting the entire year for Nintendo's E3 conference, only to get hit with:

*3D Mario Wii U
*Mario Kart U
*Retro's new game
*Smash Bros. Wii U
*Earthbound on Virtual Console
*Link to the Past 2
*Mario & Luigi Dream Team
*New Super Luigi U
*Yoshi Yarn
*Yoshi's Story 3DS
*Monolith's new game
*Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem

And whatever else they have to show off at the conference... would have been awesome. I'm sure they will reveal their latest titles and it will be exciting, but it is a little saddening to lose this, when it genuinely is something I look forward to every year.

How on earth are some of you guys coming to these conclusions? o.O

lol. let them be.
the days of 'enthusiast forums' being the place of more knowledgable, intelligent information discourse is, for the most part, long gone i'm afraid. :p

Im pretty sure new games from Nintendo will blow up regardless. You really think 3D mario will be submerged in ps4/720 news? Online interactivity, media hubs, and some games? Games will take the cake like they always do. Will not be surprised if gaf deems Nintendo winner of E3 with no traditional conference.

It depends on the angle the 3D Mario takes and how different it is from Galaxy. But no I don't think 3D Mario, Smash (if it just looks like Brawl with no surprises) and Mario Kart will get that much press in comparison to the PS4/720 onslaught.

The real wildcard is a possible Retro reveal though.

What? Mario and smash is a lock to get press.

Honestly in the future when people make threads like "Why did Nintendo fail?" this decision will be one of the top reasons along with the poor marketing of the Wii U and 3DS and lack of software. This E3 is PIVOTAL in determining which system(s) people will be buying this console generation and when you just released a system less than a year ago and your competitors are showing off new consoles you don't fucking turn tail and run away. They need to get out there with a big conference and show game after game, feature after feature and really highlight why consumers should buy a Wii U over the PS4 or Xbox.

Not even Atari was this dumb

Nothing Retro is likely to do will remotely be on the level of Smash or Mario 3D. These are franchsies that move 10 million units each and have massive followings.

The press will not just ignore these as they are for sure hits and will generate a ton of buzz.

Dude...

This thread is some of the best shit ever. I hope E3 is the same exact format for the next 50 years and nobody tries to change it once ever.

When I look back at the past 5 years of E3 conferences, they mostly blew balls, last year and the year prior being absolutely abysmal. It's about time someone decided to change it up, but of course its obviously just herp derp ninderptodo.

I actually struggled to sound that out in my head.

Nin - derp - to - do.

How the fuck can you do nothing at E3? That's what it's all about, for christ's sake.

This is terrible.

Makes sense. The three big press conferences of MS, Sony and Nintendo always just seemed like dick wagging contests. I guess if you're a journalist or a fanboy then it's entertaining but if you're an executive trying to show off your products to increase hype and sales then it's probably not the best way to do it. Especially because you're being dictated the time and place of the press conference, etc. Like how Apple stopped doing MacWorld so they could hold their own press conferences.

Frankly, I'm surprised it took this long for one of the big companies to drop out of the big E3 press conference. It, as well as E3 as a whole, have probably outlived their usefulness. I think Nintendo with their Nintendo Directs is a much better strategy for showing off your goods and promoting yourself to customers.

Nintendo franchises will be big im not worried about that
I don't think so, it was the Fall Wii U presentation(oh wait, maybe it was in a Direct as it wasn't at the one Reggie was hosting live...)
Yea it was a direct

What Nintendo is at least TRYING to say with this, is that there's no difference between a "conference announcement" and a "Nintendo Direct Announcement". Obviously we won't know until E3, but I see zero reason to lower expectations of what they have planned. We still know for sure that a new 3D Mario, and a new Mario Kart will be there - and playable. Retro's new game is nothing short of assured, as are updates on Bayonetta 2, X, and the next Smash Bros. Those same announcements in an E3 presser would be hailed as "megatons" and celebrated for weeks.
Obviously they are going to have software announcements, and perhaps a bunch of other newsworthy items. But if they were planning on a game-changing announcement - a $199 WiiU or something on the level of the WiiFit - they wouldn't be giving up all the free mainstream media coverage a press conference delivers.

Hyperbole: The Post.

RIP E3. Sony and MS will probably follow Nintendo's lead.

Microsoft has always done tons of big elaborate setups for press announcements for more than just video games, and that's only gotten stronger since apple envy struck the business world. Really everyone in the tech industry has been getting into fancy keynotes since Apple made it so popular. I assure you there is no trend away from keynotes. If anything, everything is moving the opposite direction.

Nintendo is the only one scaling back, and it really makes no sense why. People say it's because people will learn about the products some other way, but that's not the point of advertising. Everyone knows coke and budwieser exists too, yet they still advertise constantly. It's not just about making people know about your product, it's about getting people excited about it.

If they needed to scale back, sure go ahead, but to full on cancel it is really troubling.

Its blatantly clear that some of these posters have either reading problems or is trolling because they think they smell blood. Lol

I'm not entirely sure how E3 is "pivotal" to making people buy a system. Most of the people watching are already enthusiasts, and have likely already made up their mind based on exclusives, and previous biases. The mainstream audience is unlikely to ever see E3 events (especially since I don't think the conferences will even be televised, now that G4 is in the dust). All they gleam from it is the information - which is released at equally adequate rates with an N-Direct as an E3 conference.

I'll admit that in a hypothetical post-Nintendo situation, people could point to this as a sign. But it wouldn't be an accurate one.

I read it just fine. "Smaller scale events for NA market".

Unless those get livestreamed, it's hardly the same.

They ARE. They're Nintendo DIRECTS. Which have always been livestreamed.

You literally read none of this. Stop trying to have an opinion on it.

Pretty much. Plus MS usually tries to get it broadcast on Spike to reach more people.

What the fuck is going on in this thread?

Seriously, did someone slip hyperbole pills into the GAF water supply this morning.

Where the fuck are people getting no live presser = no announcements.

The press conferences are e3 for me, mostly, as i like the hype for my hobby and reveals. Not only that, but it's MY ticket to e3, the time where i get to watch a live stream or see it on cable as well as see people's reactions to what is announced in real time.

Otherwise it's just awkward demos on tv or trying to filter through the vast amount of internet updates on gaming sites where there is too much to follow.

Regardless of how you want to twist it, it isn't nothing like you claimed. There will still be major announcements, there will still be a Video with games announced and show and there will still be a floor presence with dedicated time to get brand new software in the hands of the press so they can get the word out.

The claims of Nothing is bullshit.

I think they should have waited to solidify their plans before announcing this. Get into more depth as to what they plan to for their smaller events. Right now there's a lot of overreacting and overwhelming negativity that could have been avoided on Nintendo's part.

Announcing this, with the state they're in, just seems like horrible planning on their part.
